Am I missing key shower steps or is hygiene tok excessive?

I’ve been watching hygiene tok and now wondering if I’ve not been showering myself properly all my life.

Saw a woman who uses an unscented bar soap for sensitive areas, antibacterial bar soap for smelly areas, then a body scrub, then a shower gel applied with a African net sponge, then lightly dries herself and applies body oil, then a body lotion, then a glycolic acid treatment under arms and under boobs and then FINALLY clinical strength deodorant. The video was called something like ‘how to not stink this summer’. I’ve never even done half those steps in one shower. I shower at least daily using a bar soap/shower gel and I do exfoliate every other day.

am I missing something?!

Nah that’s insane. I wash with one soap, use face moisturiser and body moisturiser and deodorant. Maybe a bit of powder to prevent chafing but that’s me done babes. I don’t smell. These people need to make content. They probably don’t wash for days in real life 😁.

The acid is supposed to take off dead skin cells and clear out the pores that trap bacteria. I believe it’s an alternative to a body scrub.

That's nuts. Our skin is supposed to be covered in bacteria, which have helpful properties. The skin has its own microbiome.

I swear to god I never smell

I've never gone longer than three days without a shower but even then not a remote whiff

I understood none of that!

I don't use soap anywhere near my vagina as I'm prone to thrush. I only spray water in that area.

How's that?🤪

It's fine. It's the talc that has been linked to cancer. But now people use cornstarch in the same way they used to use talc.

Doesn't that make you thick?

Only after you're brought to a boil

So when I shower it takes me 5 mins absolute max and that’s only if I do my hair too which I wash every 2-3 days. When I’m just washing my body and maybe shaving legs/armpits, I’m out in 3 mins or something. I don’t understand how / why people take forever in there. My DD’s and also DH do, DD’s take at least 30 mins and I just do not understand it whatsoever.

ThisOliveKoala · 15/06/2026 10:40

I do know people who shower like this in real life, some of it is cultural. I don’t do it, I think over washing your skin makes it dry and you don’t want to strip it of its natural oils.

However one thing I do is the moisturiser routine. I was always brought up to moisturise, so I do baby oil out of the shower when I’m still damp, then eucerin and if I have time, a body butter to seal and I always finish off with a spritz of scented body oil. I will say I have very soft skin. Again moisturising is something I was raised with so it’s not a big deal time wise, it’s something we’ve always done.

Simonjt · 15/06/2026 20:58

I have raging armpits so I used soap on those, I don’t use soap on my body as I get eczema, so I use fenjal oil on my body, it seems to be the only wash that doesn’t flare my skin up. I moisturise my whole body everyday, I exfoliate about once a week, I don’t I get very ashy skin.

It doesn’t really matter what others do, as different things suit different people and their skin.

Apparently, we don't even need soap to wash so don't worry about it - also, why no laughter reaction on these posts?? Haha some need that reaction because that woman you were watching is insane.

What a faff. Just use a tub of swarfega, that’ll sort you out.

Just remember, Swarfega first then water or it won't work.

😃That makes me remember men who have now died and the Swarfega on the shelf in the kitchen. Bittersweet memory.

That seems a lot , but don’t understand how people think they are washing their body properly either out a wash cloth or net .

You are hilarious “that’s me done babes” i am gonna recycle that little
one liner. Have. Sassy day lady!

Sadcafe · 16/06/2026 09:24

Personally wouldn’t watch anything thick tok related, I’m quite capable of making my own choices in life without worrying what some influencers think i should be doing. Fairly certain there’s nothing wrong with a bar of soap or some shower gel where having a shower is concerned

Not everyone needs to scrub away at their skin, because not everyone has ingrained dirt on them.

Bet you don’t wash your feet either . Just let the water run over them 🤣🫣

Yes, of course I wash my feet with soap. Using my hands.

Skin isn’t intended to be scoured daily, it’s damaging.

Using your hands does not remove dead skin cells of sun screen etc
but you do you 😁

You understand dead skin removes itself? It is a self-renewing tissue. You don’t need to remove each dead cell by hand.

Howyoudoings · 16/06/2026 21:02

To help your skin shed more efficiently and reveal a brighter layer, you can incorporate safe and effective removal methods . eg wash cloths
😂 like I said you do you use your hands
