Am I missing key shower steps or is hygiene tok excessive?

I’ve been watching hygiene tok and now wondering if I’ve not been showering myself properly all my life.

Saw a woman who uses an unscented bar soap for sensitive areas, antibacterial bar soap for smelly areas, then a body scrub, then a shower gel applied with a African net sponge, then lightly dries herself and applies body oil, then a body lotion, then a glycolic acid treatment under arms and under boobs and then FINALLY clinical strength deodorant. The video was called something like ‘how to not stink this summer’. I’ve never even done half those steps in one shower. I shower at least daily using a bar soap/shower gel and I do exfoliate every other day.

am I missing something?!

😮well she must stink ? So on that front well done her for saving the rest of us ?

However id never put clinical strength under arms

ToadRage · Today 20:39

Ridiculous. I use a single shower gel for my whole body and a scrub for my face, I rarely use anything after, occasionally moisturise my face if feeling particularly sensitive. Hydrocortisone cream if i am having ringworm flare up or sweat rash.

I am very far from the MN troop we need to shower 8 times a day but yes we should clean with bar soap then shower gel/cream and nothing wrong with body moisturiser/oil after

An African net is like a piece of loofa for washing and exfoliating, not sure what the when they’re at home is supposed to mean though?

"What's a [thing you haven't heard of] when it's at home" is a very common phrase.

Why both? Soap shower gel do the same thing.

Shower daily except 1 day a week shower is swapped for a Dettol bath (1-2 caps in a full tub ♥️). Hair shampooed x2, 1x conditioner. Exfoliating gloves for Dettol soap followed by glycolic acid shower gel and a charcoal soap for pits. Teeth brushed & mouthwash, out, body lotion on while still wet then drip dry to let it soap in. Baby powder followed by deodorant and finally perfume. That said I have a physically active job and hobbies so this time of year it’s necessary!

That's not "washing..."

Inthesummertimewhen · Today 20:44

However I do struggle to give my back a good scrub how do people do it

Inthesummertimewhen · Today 20:45

@plsbekinddelicate what's the Dettol for ??

BasilParsley · Today 20:49

Lordy me - dare I say I never shower? I just bathe - in a bath full of just-so warm water and use some gentle soap? And a gentle shampoo for my hair?

I've never had any 'smelly' issues...

OK. I'll get my coat ...

dizzydizzydizzy · Today 20:50

I just give myself a good soaping all over (same soap for whole body) and rinse it off. Sometimes I wash my hair too. I always moisturize my face and sometimes other parts of my body.

plsbekinddelicate · Today 20:50

Dettol is twofold - one it reminds me of childhood, two one of my hobbies involves a significant amount of time in lakes, rivers, mud etc… so for disinfectant purposes too

LivingTheDreamish · Today 20:54

People are weird, but if they enjoy all the extra faffing about and have money to burn, good for them. Obviously if a medical issue arises then specialist products may be necessary, but otherwise you only need soap/shower gel to clean your body.

What do you mean up there? 🤔

I use a long handled back brush

Comefromaway · Today 21:01

No way have I got time for that.

I shower every 2-3 days. Double cleanse my scalp (I have psoriasis) then conditioner on the ends. Whilst the conditioner is doing its thing I use s shower mitt thingy and Dove shower gel all over my body with special attention to the pits. Then a quick rinse off. IF I have time I’ll use body lotion but usually just deoderant and facial sunscreen.

on the non shower days I strip at the sink and use unscented bar soap and a flannel for a good scrub of pits, upper legs area, under the boobs and my feet.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · Today 21:08

I'm agog at the idea of people disinfecting themselves in a Dettol bath. Who wants to stink like they just had first aid on a skinned knee?

Anyway OP you might like the hygiene sub on Reddit. Those folks are bonkers, bordering on fetishists. My favourite was a person who keeps a pump bottle of antibac hand soap in the shower so they can disinfect their hands in between touching their various body parts.

What do you mean up there? 🤔

Spraying water where soap shouldn't be going or end up with thrush. Hmm decisions decisions 🤔 🤣

PercyPigsAreOverRated · Today 21:10

Goodness. I used shampoo and conditioner for my hair. Exfoliating soap everywhere else. Every 2 days.
Body lotion if my skin feels particularly dry.

Genuine question wouldn’t it be easier and just as quick to have a quick shower rather than that strip wash? Doesn’t water splash everywhere?

Overworkedandknackered · Today 21:20

Maybe I’m weird but I think showering is a private activity, I’m not sure I’d take advice from someone who films themselves and puts it on the internet. Soap, water, clean towel and you won’t stink.

I understood none of that!
