Are you close to your brother in adulthood?

If you’re a woman?

I have one of each. My daughter is the eldest. I am thrilled with my son, and was in no way dissapointed. However, as someone who grew up with sisters who I’m still incredibly close too in adulthood, I can’t help but feel sad for my kids if they won’t have a bond like this. All of my female friends with brothers isn’t close to them in adulthood. I’m hoping this is just my circle and for most people it’s really normal to have close relationship with brothers!

I should add though, my husband doesn’t get on with his brother either. For many of the same reasons.

I wonder, those who do still get on with their brother, are they older or younger than you?

Upsidedownagain · 24/07/2026 09:48

Yes, he's 19 months younger and for most of our adult lives, we've lived a few miles apart. We message frequently and see each other every few months. We talk non stop when we meet up and we feel we have very much shared our lives.

ginasevern · 24/07/2026 09:51

We aren't close but there is a large age gap with no other siblings in between. He was basically an adult when I was a little child. So really he's more like a cousin that you might see now and again.

No.

We live in the same town and I see him at Christmas/if there’s a family do for any reason but we don’t speak to each other much in between, we just have zero in common. I’m very fond of his wife though and I do catch up with her more often.

Two brothers (I'm the eldest) middle brother we have nothing to do with (mental health problems his choice not to engage with any of us). Younger brother, not really close, we do socialise a couple of times a year but nothing major.

Always wished I'd got a sister.

No guarantees you'd have got on with your sister sadly as adults.

In short, no. Much younger db who emigrated a few years ago and is not great at keeping in touch so seldom hear from him: got on well but never v close due to age gap - I’ve accepted that his life has moved on.

Other db v close in age and used to be very close but relationship deteriorated when he married for the 2nd time. In all
honesty I don’t think his wife can cope with sharing him, but it’s manifested over many years in accusations that I’ve said/done horrible things to her, so db has naturally taken her side. It feels very deliberate to me, as it’s given them an excuse not to have anything to do with me, which I think was the ultimate goal. Got on great with db and first wife so found it all very odd. Trying to maintain a relationship with them felt like playing a game where they made up the rules but didn’t tell me what they were. And then changed them but again didn’t tell me. Repeatedly. It was both exhausting and bewildering.

My life is certainly calmer now and I’ve no doubt we won’t have any further contact. There is an element of sadness as sibling relationships are so unique in that sense of shared life experience. I’ve reached the stage of life where I would have liked a sister: friends of mine with sisters have still maintained that contact and are there for each other, even despite differences and potentially prickly relationships in the past.

No guarantees with sisters.

4 Brothers two older, two younger.

Eldest has lived in Australia for the last 30 years, so dont see him more than once every 5/6 years but speak to him once a month.

Second brother lives about 4 hours away, speak to him at least once a week, closest to him than all the others although he hated me as a teenager to the point he denied I was his sister once! I was loud and popular he was cery much part of the nerd group. I probably embaressed him.

Third brother lives about 45 minutes away and I see him once a year when 2nd brother comes to stay for a week. Never really speak to him in between

Youngest brother is a pompus prat. First to go to Uni ( although we are all highly qualified in our own fields, in fact 2nd brother the most qualified and sucsessful). He liked to lord it over the rest of us about it all. He is also gay and looks down on the rest of us because we are not. He also lives in London and dosnt like visiting the Country and we dont like going to London. Havnt see him in years and very very rarely speak to him.

ThingsCouldBeEasier · 24/07/2026 14:13

Yes. Difficult circumstances with additional needs DC here mean we don't see each other often or even speak on the phone much but I know he totally has my back and we can rely on each other. We were a generally close family growing up.

VillageFete · 24/07/2026 14:21

Don’t have a brother, just a sister- we’re very different but close. I’d do anything for her although sometimes I don’t always like her.

My DH has 1 brother - he dislikes him and sees him only to appease MIL.

I have friends with sisters and they’re not close. I have friends with brothers who are very close. My mum’s brother is very close to my mum and his other sisters.

Sex/Gender means nothing- it’s personality.

Londonmummy66 · 24/07/2026 14:25

Not with mine - he was the (younger) golden child and I was the scapegoat and he turned into an entitled pillock who has never taken any responsibility for anything - 5 divorces, nearly went to jail for non payment of child maintenance and has rinsed my parents of £1000s.

However DH and his younger sister are quite close - its good for my DC to see that relationship.

My DDs are quite close in their early 20s and get on well with their cousins of a similar age on both sides.

Helenbelena · 24/07/2026 14:26

I’m much closer to my sister than my brother. So no, we’re not close as adults.

Fluffyscrubber · 24/07/2026 14:28

Yes.
He lives within walking distance, will help with things in the house or garden jobs, pop in on his way past after work, come over regularly for dinner or a drink, and the same in reverse.

YouTookMyTimeAndYouTookMyMoney · 24/07/2026 14:33

Used to have blazing rows as he was very irritating up to becoming a teen, then we were united in coping with our alcoholic mother. Went to university around the same time and would visit each other then. Ended up living in the same county post-uni, even lived together a few times. Now we speak at least once a week and text most days.

hansenhen · 24/07/2026 14:34

No, but I wasn’t close to him in childhood either.

sanityisamyth · 24/07/2026 14:36

Don’t have a brother but have 2 sisters. One im
NC contact with and the other LC as she was a flying monkey and enables my mother in psychotic sister assaulting me on a daily basis when we were growing up.

Wishingplenty · 24/07/2026 14:42

No. My Sil saw to this. I expect this to be the reason in a lot of cases.

Supras · 24/07/2026 17:13

My brother and I are really close even though we are 10 years apart and only half siblings. I'm much closer to him than my full blood sister.
My partner is also very close to his sister. They are 5 years apart and she is the older one.

bugalugs45 · 24/07/2026 17:19

Yes, we text every 2-3 days and usually see each other once a week or so , he’s funny and good company , someone I could be friends with if we weren’t related.
I have a good relationship with his wife which helps ,
I’m very lucky

timekeepsshifting · 24/07/2026 17:35

We live about 300 miles apart and I’d say we were reasonably emotionally close though we only speak or text about once a month. I’ll contact him if there’s an issue with my dad’s care or we’ll ring each other just for a quick catch up. If I haven’t seen him for a few months I’ll miss him and we’ll try and arrange a meet-up.

So we’re not in daily contact but if anything big happens, I’d be on the phone to him!

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 24/07/2026 17:39

I have two brothers and I’m close to both of them. I talk to both most days. I’m going on holiday with one next month (the other was invited but he wasn’t interested).

Hippeedippeemee · 24/07/2026 18:05

No, not spoken to my brother for years.

Thecomfortador · 24/07/2026 18:08

No, more of an occasional thing, we can go years without seeing each other although are on the family WhatsApp and occasionally will text each other about relevant things.

Potooooooooes · 24/07/2026 19:08

Wishingplenty · 24/07/2026 14:42

No. My Sil saw to this. I expect this to be the reason in a lot of cases.

Same here. Of course you have to be a bit of a milque-toast to allow this to happen, so it is on his head.

frustratedgreeter · 24/07/2026 19:22

I live in a different country to my brother but we are still very close. Not a day goes by without one of us forwarding a daft meme or article about something we know the other is interested on. I still watch a lot of UK based tv and one of my favourite things is that my brother and I have 'post-show debriefs', it started with trying to work out who H was in LOD and has progressed to Traitors and The Apprentice. Nothing highbrow but makes me feel closer to him. My brother is one of my favourite people. He is kind and will do anything for anyone. He doesn't have a judgy bone in him.

I get back home 2 or 3 times a year and spend a lot of time with him and his family then. He's a wonderful brother and uncle.
