Henry Nowak

Heard of him? Probably not, because there seems to be an almost complete news blackout about him. Basically the police handcuffed him and let him bleed out because they thought he may have said something racist - he didn't, it was a lie told by his murderer. Henry was 18.

I could bring up Bhim Kohli, Biba Henry and Nicole Smallman as an example of racism, but I choose to believe it was judicial/ police incompetence.

Yes and I remember hearing about those awful events AT THE TIME! Not months later!

He also told the police he'd been stabbed (thinking they'd help him) - and they
didn't believe him, they handcuffed him and arrested him. It's on the tape.

People are tying themselves in knots trying to defend the indefensible.

Im not. Nowak's murder was brutal and the police response was fucked up. I look forward to hearing the result of the investigation.

OK. I first read about it in this report on the sentencing several months after the incident, but fine, if you say so. I will go out and stab someone now. No doubt the police will let me off. Just need to dress in a sari to make sure.

Bhim Kohli wearing a dark jacket and smiling

Bhim Kohli: Boy and girl sentenced for killing dog walker, 80

A 15-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl were both found guilty of Bhim Kohli's manslaughter.

A couple of things strike me in this discussion: several people have said that stab wounds to the chest often don't bleed a lot, so it is understandable that the police wouldn't immediately believe that he had been stabbed. However, he had also been stabbed in the face and legs- those wounds would have been bleeding profusely, and certainly the injury to his face have been immediately obvious.

Also, that the police haven't released the body cam footage - and yet they were quick to release the footage from both the Manchester airport incident and the shooting of Chris Kaba. Almost as if they are happy to release footage if they think it will help them and not happy to if they know it will reveal them behaving unacceptably. ...

That's horrific. But did the police handcuff the dying victim?

Agree. I don't see anyone trying to defend the murderer or the police.

I think we can all agree there has been a massive police fuck up.

Good point on the footage, is there anything that can make them release it?

ETA not that I watch this type of thing, not the George Floyd clip even but they do seem to be hiding on this.

It has been shown in court according to pp, but I don't know if they have a legal obligation to make it public? They should, though.

That seems surprisingly lenient given the circumstances of the murder.

Yet you insist there was no media black out or similar. When of course - there was. We only heard about it when it went to court. At least 5 months after the racist horrific event.

Anything that Musk involves himself in will end up demonising a community.

@janefondue do you think Henry Novak’s family should be able to bring a private prosecution? Unless they are rich they will need funds from somewhere.

The family has called for an investigation and said nothing about prosecuting. Maybe we can wait for that before inviting a lunatic billionaire to meddle in the U.K.

Also, the average sentence for a stabbing is 15-25 years.

Terrible tragedy but no news black out: we’ve all heard, a while ago actually and it’s very sad. 😢

Not true, the majority of people didn't hear about it until it went to court. 5 months at least, since it happened.

WhatHoJeeves · 01/06/2026 17:31

An appalling tragedy and apparently horrendously incompetent policing. But, as usual, the response from some people is to use this as an excuse for more division and hatred instead of a reason to come together in condemning all violence against anyone and by anyone. More acceptance, kindness and understanding from all sides is what we all need, not more hatred.

That's normal. It's what usually happens in murder cases. It is reported in the local news at the time, then it may, or may not, feature in the national news when it comes to trial.
