What do teetotal people drink on a night out at the pub

This probably sounds silly but we are going out for DH birthday for drinks tonight.

I have decided to go teetotal so I don't really know what to drink in the pub that will be a long drink?

What does everyone drink who doesn't have alcohol?

Are there only fizzy drinks available?

He's having lager and I normally have wine so a new experience for me!

Alcohol free drinks

highlandponymummy · 28/05/2026 12:55

Guiness zero

bananaapplepears · 28/05/2026 12:59

I drink tap water with ice. I don't like fizzy drinks or J2Os (full of sugar and make my teeth feel funny) so water it is. Tap water is basically all i drink at home too so its fine.

Lime and soda or Fevertree tonic water on its own.

I drink tea when I’m out, more and more places serve tea these days, and there are loads of alcohol-free versions of a range of drinks.

Ditto. I’m turning into my mother….

Nitgel · 28/05/2026 13:06

Ice cold coke and crisps

Killer combo. Flavour crisps?

Freeme31 · 28/05/2026 13:15

Coke or non alcoholic gin

Thanks so much everyone! The menu doesn't show what drinks they have and I don't go for artificial sweeteners, normally, or fizzy drinks. I normally have black coffee but this will be an event later in the evening so was hoping to have non-caffeinated drink options.

I really thank you all for your assistance! I will keep an eye out for Fever Tree and all of the other suggestions but feel a lot more optimistic!

How about a Shirley Temple @TheThunderRolls

(a classic; ginger ale with a splash of sweet grenadine syrup, with a maraschino cherry garnish)

Dh and I are both teetotal. Depending on how we feel we drink Guinness 0.0. Peroni 0.0 or Heineken 0.0.

If they sell it non-alcoholic Kopparberg lime and strawberry cider. Or sometimes coke or an appletiser. The zero or low alcohol choices have got really good over the last 5 years or so.

Troublein · 28/05/2026 13:32

Coffee if they have it, fruit juice and lemonade if they don't.

whereas my mother is far more likely to have an alcoholic drink in her hand than a cuppa, and can’t abide tea.

Stoicandhappy · 28/05/2026 13:57

Lime and soda
Diet coke
fruit juice

Goodbyeimgoinghome · 28/05/2026 14:01

Lemon lime and bitters.

dottiedodah · 28/05/2026 14:26

Peroni AF lager for me! Even better with a nice dash of lime 1970s style!

DilemmaDelilah · 28/05/2026 15:18

Alcohol free beer usually. I would choose diet bitter lemon and soda if they had it.... but hardly anywhere does!

user1471538283 · 28/05/2026 15:23

Ooh me! I'm not teetotal but I rarely drink and I usually work my way through all the non alcohol cocktails especially if there's lots of fresh fruit available. Some have 0% alcohol in them although I usually prefer them plain.

mamajong · 28/05/2026 15:35

Depends on my mood, sometimes an alcohol free shandy, a coke, a coffee or a soda water and lime, occasionally a cranberry and lemonade or a mocktail

ThePoetsWife · 28/05/2026 15:38

Soda and lime or alcohol free lagers

Dr13Hadley · 28/05/2026 15:44

CreamFirstJamSecond · 28/05/2026 09:23

0% peroni or equivalent.

Same. There are so many alcohol free versions of brand name lagers and beers and even Guinness now that are really very good. I’d rather them than overly sweet mocktails. I’m not a massive fan of the 0% spirits or G&Ts but each to their own! I’ll sometimes just have sparkling water if it’s this warm.

BillieWiper · 28/05/2026 15:50

I think many teetotals like to get mocktail or an AF version of beer, cider or spirit for one or two drinks and the rest they just sip water or soda water.

I guess otherwise it's costing the same as it would if you drank booze.

ShowOfHands · 28/05/2026 16:32

I've been drinking tea in bars since I was not quite 18. I've even propped up the bar in goth clubs with an earl grey and a biscuit.

KnittyKnotty · 28/05/2026 16:37

I usually have fresh orange and lemonade if I'm not drinking alcohol when I'm out. At home I stick to 'posher flavoured' diluting juice mainly.

Pubs have loads of alcohol free stuff now, gin, wine, beer etc. What do you drink at home?

Comicalblackcat · 28/05/2026 16:42

What about Eisberg non alcoholic wine, very pleasant ice cold. I was introduced to it while on antibiotics, and had drunk it since.

Waitingfordoggo · 28/05/2026 16:44

I often ask for tea which surprises and sometimes annoys barkeepers. But I love tea and it’s an easy and cheap drink to make so it’s no skin off their nose. (Some pubs can’t do it because they don’t have kettles/kitchens).
