What do teetotal people drink on a night out at the pub

This probably sounds silly but we are going out for DH birthday for drinks tonight.

I have decided to go teetotal so I don't really know what to drink in the pub that will be a long drink?

What does everyone drink who doesn't have alcohol?

Are there only fizzy drinks available?

He's having lager and I normally have wine so a new experience for me!

You could maybe have alcohol free wine?

BoredZelda · 28/05/2026 10:12

J20, Fresh orange and lemonade, or pineapple juice.

Pinana · 28/05/2026 10:13

I'm not teetotal, but if I'm driving I'll usually choose a non-alcoholic beer. I don't really like sweet fizzy drinks much, and feel a bit 'yucky' if I drink too much of them, but a non-alcoholic lager is pleasingly refreshing and not sweet.

I'd avoid the fake gin type things - disappointment every time, weird fake flavours, far better sticking to things that were never alcoholic in the first place such as juices, mixers, mocktails provided they don't have the fakey gins in them. Same with the alcohol free wines. Some low alcohol free / v.low beers are good though, Peroni is my preferred one.

Fever Tree tonics, ginger ales etc. Fentimans as mentioned are good too. I tend to have the occasional diet coke bt mainly ginger ale/beer, lime and soda or cranberry juice.

YourKonstantine · 28/05/2026 10:14

I tend to have a Coke Zero, then move onto water as I don’t like too much fizz.

but there’s all sorts! Cordial, fruit juice, j20’s, often alcohol free versions of beer, cider etc.

Erin1975 · 28/05/2026 10:19

Most pubs offer a wide range of alcohol free drinks nowadays. No longer is it just Britvic orange juice or flat coke. Alcohol free beers, cider, alcohol free spirits, tonic, fruit juices, fizzy drinks galore. The world is your teetotal oyster.

Forestgreenblue · 28/05/2026 10:20

I gave up drinking for about 6 months - I used to have tonic water but a posh one like Fever Tree and asked them to serve it in a gin glass so to everyone else it looked like I was having a G&T

TY78910 · 28/05/2026 10:21

Just tonic! Close enough to a G&T

Lavender14 · 28/05/2026 10:21

There are usually some alcohol free versions of cider or beer on offer for drivers anyway so I tend to drink those if I'm just in a pub. If I'm somewhere with nice cocktails I'll get a mocktail.

mondaytosunday · 28/05/2026 10:22

Soda and lime, Coca Cola (or other soft drink), non alcoholic whatever… I wouldn’t drink alcohol free wine though. Water with lemon if no other non fizzy option (but I like fizzy drinks).

Deenak · 28/05/2026 10:22

Not completely fizz free but grapefruit juice and soda water is my go to, as it's not too sweet.

You can't mix grapefruit juice with some long term meds though eg some blood pressure meds and antidepressants.

TheChosenTwo · 28/05/2026 10:25

Not tee total but don’t generally drink much at all these days - I tend to have a soda with fresh lime because I find the cordial too sweet, and then just plain water because I don’t really drink anything other than water! Can’t handle too much fizzy soda either so just one of those 😂
But also as a result of not really drinking much I don’t tend to spend a whole evening in the pub anymore, a couple of hours with a couple of soft drinks and then I’m done.

This. Complete waste of time and money.

I also avoid artificial sweeteners, which strikes out about 90% of soft drinks sold in pubs.

Which means I'm left with a Fevertree tonic water or other drinks, alcohol free lager, Appletise or orange juice and soda, which is difficult because you have to watch them like a hawk to make sure they don't give you J2O, squash or lemonade instead of soda.

ChristmasStickDaddy · 28/05/2026 10:27

Ginger ale with ice (cant stand ginger beer though, I used to have ginger ale with gin so it tastes nice without the gin)
diet coke,
most places now also have a wide range of alcohol free lagers, ciders etc
appletiser,
j20

I either order a mocktail (if available) or I will stick with sparkling water.

isthesolution · 28/05/2026 10:40

Non alcoholic cider usually

Maddy70 · 28/05/2026 10:41

Alcohol free beer
Ginger beer
Lime and soda

TheThunderRolls · 28/05/2026 10:44

Thanks so much everyone! The menu doesn't show what drinks they have and I don't go for artificial sweeteners, normally, or fizzy drinks. I normally have black coffee but this will be an event later in the evening so was hoping to have non-caffeinated drink options.

I really thank you all for your assistance! I will keep an eye out for Fever Tree and all of the other suggestions but feel a lot more optimistic!

Juice. Sparkling water, lemon lime & soda if I'm feeling fancy. A mocktail. Some pubs offer alcohol free wines or beer these days, as people are becoming more health conscious

Andrea87 · 28/05/2026 10:47

Any fruit juice in a pint glass then topped up to the pint with soda water and ice.
My favourite is grapefruit or apple juice.

TheFrendo · 28/05/2026 10:57

Coffee, Coke Zero, Lime and Soda.

YoBetty · 28/05/2026 10:58

I don't drink alcohol any more either, and it is pretty much limited to either fizzy or fruity. Okay for a couple of drinks but any more than that and you've got indigestion.

My tipple of choice in a pub is alcohol-free Gordon's gin & tonic, or if they don't have it, just the tonic with ice & lemon. In restaurants, I mostly drink plain water.

BogRollBOGOF · 28/05/2026 11:04

I like 0% ciders. I'm not teatotal but often I don't "need" the alcohol and just want a nice taste and better quality sleep.

It's a struggle when you don't drink artificial sweetners and things like Roses Lime ✅️ but Britvic Lime ❌️ is a PITA for ordering at a bar when you can't see brands easily and can't read ingredient lists.

RosieandBluey · 28/05/2026 11:09

I always get coke zero, or if it’s a nice place they might do alcohol free cocktails. They usually have fruit infusions as well. I never understood the non-alcohol versions of alcoholic drinks. When I used to drink alcohol it was purely because I enjoyed being drunk. I never actually enjoyed the stuff. Alcohol free wine or gin does not appeal to me at all.

ToadRage · 28/05/2026 11:15

I usually have Diet coke cos that's what I like but bars also serve lemonade, OJ, water... My husband often drinks OJ and lemonade cos he doesn't like cola.
