What do teetotal people drink on a night out at the pub

This probably sounds silly but we are going out for DH birthday for drinks tonight.

I have decided to go teetotal so I don't really know what to drink in the pub that will be a long drink?

What does everyone drink who doesn't have alcohol?

Are there only fizzy drinks available?

He's having lager and I normally have wine so a new experience for me!

Ginger beer and lime was always my go to, but now so many places only have ginger ale I go with orange and cranberry juice (some places have it as a summer breeze mocktail).

mindutopia · 28/05/2026 09:34

Literally anything else. Sometimes I have an AF beer, sometimes I just have a mixer on ice like a tonic water or bitter lemon, or a ginger beer, or a pint of lime and soda. Yes, those are all fizzy I’m afraid. I will also sometimes have a tea or a (usually decaf) coffee. Or a coke or a sprite.

It’s a bit like I had to give up drinking most caffeine due to a health issue. I’ve had a morning coffee every morning for like 40 years. It wasn’t until I stopped drinking coffee that I was like, oh there are so many other options! Now I might have a hot chocolate or a raw cacao or a matcha or any variety of tea or iced herbal tea or iced coconut water. There are so many more things out there once you get the idea out of your head that you only drink that one thing in that setting.

Usually lime and soda.. but I quite often ask for more lime, they never put enough in.

Someone mentioned a virgin mojito which would be very nice in this weather if available.

Tanqueray Sevilla Gin 0% makes a lovely G&T

gingercat02 · 28/05/2026 09:35

If I wasn't drinking I would have lime and Soda, or just water, or a San Peligrino.
Not a fan of fizzy drinks, hate all colas. Very limited choice.
For 0% Guinness is meant to be good

GOODCAT · 28/05/2026 09:38

Sparkling water and occasionally juice.

waltzingparrot · 28/05/2026 09:39

Thatchers zero cider - refreshing long drink.

MargoLivebetter · 28/05/2026 09:39

I like all those flavoured tonic waters and they are not usually very fizzy. I quite like a ginger ale as well, although I find most ginger beer is too fierce and fizzy for me.

If it is a basic pub that doesn't have a flavoured tonic water, then I will join many of the other posters on here with an old fashioned lime and soda water.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 28/05/2026 09:41

I usually go zero beer. They have some really good ones.

fantam · 28/05/2026 09:44

Fentimans ginger beer
Tonic water, ice and lemon (in one of those gin glasses!)
Lime and soda
Fruit juice + a glass of iced water to knock out some of the gloopiness.

And a confession, now it doesn't come from meanness just lack of bloody choice in pubs for non drinkers...... I have a tiny squeezy bottle that I fill with my own cordial concoction - lemon, apple and lime. I can then just get a glass of iced water and squeeze it in. Gorgeous. Try asking for that in a pub! But I do buy other stuff aswell as above.

I don't stay in the pub that long, a couple of hours is enough for me. As the only non drinker it gets a bit isolating to be surrounded by the group getting louder and louder and full of it! I join in for a while, but sober humour is different to tiddly humour believe me!

OttersOnAPlane · 28/05/2026 09:47

Guinness 0% is great. Botivo or Crodino are very good alternatives to Aperol spritz.

Grapefruit juice with soda is a nice long drink when it's hot.

tiramisugelato · 28/05/2026 09:49

Diet coke
Alcohol free beer
Lemonade
Mocktails

Secretseverywhere · 28/05/2026 09:50

I quite like a posh tonic water. I used to drink g&t and I can’t taste the difference tbh. Tastebuds never really recovered after covid to be fair. It costs nearly a fiver! Same with a Coke etc.

theturtleswims · 28/05/2026 09:25

This is beautiful. I love a good ginger beer and this is one!

Totally agree, its lovely! I also enjoy the Fentimens Rose Lemonade.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/05/2026 09:50

Soda water & lime
Tonic water & orange
J20 in a pint glass, topped up with soda water - could do this with still water if you don’t want the fizz. I just find J20 too strong undiluted.
Ginger ale
Guinness 0%
Some AF beers - Erdinger and Lucky Saint are both very good.
Kombucha (although I have never found this in a pub)

tinyspiny · 28/05/2026 09:53

I don’t go to pubs but lime and soda is my drink of choice if I’m out

8TinyToeBeans · 28/05/2026 09:55

I'm not teetotal, but I don't drink often and I don't drink out of the house. My go to is something like fentimans or appletiser.

Silverbirchleaf · 28/05/2026 09:57

Must pubs have a non- alcoholic section. I’ll drink

orange and lemonade
Diet Coke
frexibet non alcohol wine - thus is lovely
elderflower drink
appletise

I rarely drink in a pub now because I’m usually driving.

AImportantMermaid · 28/05/2026 10:01

Some places (e.g. gastropubs) will do you an iced coffee.

placemats · 28/05/2026 10:04

Soda water with a dash of lime and no ice but will accept a cut lemon with it. I also love sparkling water but many places don't sell it.

LarksAscending · 28/05/2026 10:05

Non alcoholic beer or Diet Coke or sparkling water. But there’s usually no alcohol cider, juices.

Shinyhappyapple · 28/05/2026 10:09

I have a couple of friends who don’t drink alcohol. One always has no-alcohol versions of alcoholic drinks - lager or gin; another drinks lemonade or coffee and another drinks soda and lime.

Mostly if I’m not drinking I’ll have Pepsi Max or sometimes I’ll have a mocktail. I’ll also have these drinks alternated with alcoholic drinks when I am drinking. And sometimes I just have a glass of plain water.

One thing that’s a bit annoying though, as my son reported when doing dry January, he found that many non-alcoholic beers were more expensive than the with-alcohol versions.

MeanwhileinGilead · 28/05/2026 10:11

If they can make a Cosmopolitan, Bloody Mary, Madras, Mai Tai, or Greyhound they can also make you a tall glass of cranberry juice, tomato juice, orange juice, pineapple juice, or grapefruit juice - over ice and/or with the trimmings if you like.

dailyconniptions · 28/05/2026 10:11

Ooh I love a St Clements which is half lemonade and half orange juice. Refreshing and you can have a pint of it. Yum!

tealandteal · 28/05/2026 10:11

I have been tee total for over a decade now, the selection is much better these days! There are often nice mocktails on the menu, but they can also be quite pricey. I often have a tonic water especially if fancy ones are available. Other options are
Elderflower presse
Juice/j20 and lemonade
lime and soda
