It's incredibly unsafe to be in a room for longer than a few minutes at 43C.
Heat stroke and dehydration will set in very quickly.

People are going to die.
They must be dying already - we just aren't hearing about it.

Any doctors or nurses about to let us know what's happening out there?

On Tuesday i was told there have been deaths in a local care home but i havent had it confirmed.

I’m always reminded of this article when it gets super hot:

Thanks Flowers Thats the article i was looking for earlier this week and couldnt find

The temptation for me to do the same is getting stronger and stronger

Would it work if I put a sheet over my sky light in the kitchen? It’s like an oven in there! Need to shimmy out of the bathroom window so trying to work out if it’s worth it. But I feel the kitchen being so hot is impacting the temperature of the rest of the house!

Yes it would certainly help. Shimmying out of the bathroom window sounds a bit risky tho!

It does. I hope it’s a flat roof.

It will help - can you throw a rug over it from the window?

Don't endanger yourself!

I have tilt windows too. If you open the window and put the sheet or towel through the top gap then close it, it shuts the material and keeps it fixed in place.

Only my side windows open - the middle big one doesn't open at all so I just have sheet on the inside for that. But I've done my side windows and it helps.

I've got tilt I can drape sheets and towel out quite easily

toffeeappleturnip · 25/06/2026 12:25

I know what you mean about the look of it. But once you put yours up I bet lots of others will follow suit.

If you are in an area that's predicted to get to 37C today do it for the sake of your health. Flowers

Same they will welcome the idea !!

ConstantlyFuriosa · 25/06/2026 15:38

Trying two new things today. Because of the high humidity I’m running a little dehumidifier as well as the fan. Also closing the internal downstairs doors to try stop that heat rising now that I’ve got the upstairs back door closed and no means of venting the air. I have to close it because the sun hits directly on it now until it disappears at sunset.

I am utterly dreading tomorrow as tonight isn’t set to get any cooler than 22 degrees ffs! Followed by a 35 degree day which simply isn’t low enough to cool anything down.

This. Is. Hell.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 25/06/2026 15:39

It’s too late to try draping sheets today. I’d only let all the hot air in because if I’m going to do it, it will have to be in the morning when the room is at its coolest.

Lottapianos · 25/06/2026 15:44

'I am utterly dreading tomorrow as tonight isn’t set to get any cooler than 22 degrees ffs! Followed by a 35 degree day which simply isn’t low enough to cool anything down.'

It really is bloody awful. The end is in sight though. 25 degrees from Sunday (London) and mid to low 20s all next week. Can't wait

JenniferBooth · 25/06/2026 15:56

Im visiting my elderly DM on Saturday evening. I hope she has left her bandages on her legs alone

Indeed but apparntly this super el nino thing may get us ??

the80sweregreat · 25/06/2026 16:21

I also read that the El Niño may return ! I agree that the media and news are playing down the fact that there will be more heatwaves looming and not much we can do about it :(
They go about staying out the heat, yet send their reporters out in it to tell us how hot it is!

ConstantlyFuriosa · 25/06/2026 16:23

I know it’s against the law in boiling weather but I had to cave and open the bedroom windows - on the east-facing side so they get the full morning sun, ffs! It was stifling and hard to breathe. Bedroom fan shows the temp and it said 30, so given it’s supposed to be 31 outside I thought what the hey! It’s only a degree! Of course, bedroom is now showing 31, but there is a breeze - albeit a very warm one - and psychologically it just feels better.

Sigh.

What really gets me is when the forecasters gleefully tell you how ‘glorious’ the stifling hot weather is.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 25/06/2026 16:25

I know I’m going to regret this extra degree later but at least I can breathe!

It feels like gaslighting.

It absolutely does.

There is also a strong prediction that this heatwave may return after the reprieve of next week's cooler weather 😟 . . . this from France:

https://www.rfi.fr/en/environment/20260624-france-bakes-under-heatwave-as-warnings-extend-into-july

the gaslighters will still say "its only a few days"

GaIadriel · 25/06/2026 16:59

Now I'm back in the house I'm perfectly fine. It's warm but perfectly manageable. Work was hell though! Full safety gear. Heavy trousers and a long sleeved t-shirt. The aircon in my truck packed up on Monday morn and couldn't get it fixed till this afternoon so it's been sweaty to say the least.

Was 36C in the cab at one point when I was waiting onsite but was tolerable when driving with the windows down. Considered having the week off as I'm self employed but would've cost me at least a grand so I decided I'd rather just be a bit hot.

I'm not going to start worrying about what may or may not happen in a couple of weeks time - no energy for it. At the moment, it's definitely looking cooler from Sunday so I'll take it!

I just keep thinking we're only in sodding June too...there'll be more of this shit.
