Does anyone dislike David Attenborough

I’m just wondering if there is anyone who dislikes David Attenborough.

I genuinely think he’s one of the very few people that everyone likes.
No matter how old, what class, what culture etc all I’ve ever heard is how much they love him.

It’s his 100th birthday today and if you google his name you’ll see.

I thought I’d do a poll incase anyone was too afraid of admitting they don’t like him 🤣

Why would you post such a mean-spirited thread on the man's 100th birthday? I have no strong opinions but this thread is unpleasant.

Read the post - some lovely comments and75 per cent in favour

you know mumsnet - it always turns to argument

I think we’re safe DA won’t read it t

Actually, a number of very educated folk of the older generation do hold him in disdain. He travelled the globe, seeing all the damage humankind was inflicting for decades, but never mentioned it. He only reported on animals.
It was only once climate change was already in the media that he addressed the damage he'd seen.
I know several octogenarians who think he is a hypocrite. These are people with doctorates etc, they don't just throw criticisms around willy nilly.

My mum doesn't like him. She thinks he talks down to us.

😂😂😂

I would say the exact opposite

Advocodo · 08/05/2026 22:14

I think he is absolutely amazing but I nope he gives up from tv now to relax and enjoy the rest of his life and let some other presenter get the work. He must have made tons of money by now.

I wouldn’t.

LBFseBrom · 08/05/2026 22:19

I like him, as far as I can tell, love his programmes.

I did know someone, died last year, who couldn't stand David Attenborough. However he tended to dislike anyone with a high profile who was very successful in their profession. Nobody took any notice of him anyway.

I dislike these stupid threads where if someone is in the spotlight for positive reasons someone feels they need to start a thread to encourage people to bitch about them.

It makes the starter of the thread look incredibly unpleasant.

“Thought I’d start a pole” for what? To be goadie? Pathetic.

You’ll be on the viscous thread! North or South Pole?
It’s Poll!

Allseeingallknowing · 08/05/2026 22:21

How can anyone find his programmes boring, with such fascinating material?

HayfeverComethAndThatRightSoon · 08/05/2026 22:21

inmyhair · 08/05/2026 21:27

I thought it was just me who couldn't stand him, I really can't.

His programs are all doom and gloom. We're all going to die out, kill off all the species, humans are awful, blah blah blah. So so negative I have to turn him off.

Only the recent ones. The original Wildlife on One programmes in the 80s(?) were amazing. That was in the days when our mum's forced us to sit and watch educational telly at 7pm. Got told off if we weren't paying attention 🤣
Interestingly, my mother's friends are now calling him out for not mentioning the visible effects of climate change sooner. Apparently he's witnessed all of it but stayed quiet until last 20 years.

metrobonk · 08/05/2026 22:22

He’s a one trick pony, entitled boy’s club member of the British establishment

FullerGoEasyOnThePepsi · 08/05/2026 22:22

I don't dislike him, but I do find him incredibly boring and don't really get the hype!

Allseeingallknowing · 08/05/2026 22:23

riceuten · 08/05/2026 22:10

I don't know him, so I will reserve judgement

He’s been part of our lives for many, many years, you must know if you like him. You don’t have to know him personally to have an opinion!

eastegg · 08/05/2026 22:27

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 08/05/2026 20:30

I don't like him. I don't disagree with anything he says or does, particularly; I just don't like him.

I feel the same. It’s nothing in particular, but I just don’t warm to him. I’m trying to think what the feeling is based on, and I think it’s just that whenever I’ve seen him being interviewed I’ve just been left cold. I’m interested in his programmes, but I don’t have positive feelings towards him.

Neither privilege nor age are a crime. As for what's to like, he has been vocal in support of saving nature and animals. That alone says a lot about someone

Yeah, vocal, cool. Everyones vocal about nature 🙄

That was me.
No, it has nothing to do with colonialism.
It’s just that he’s not a national treasure to us. We didn’t grow up with him and his accent is a bit grating for some people. He’s just not especially on our radar the way he seems to be to British people.

Got it! I can imagine for people who's family's suffered under colonial rule, they might dislike him more actively for what he symbolises

There would be journalists covering the other stuff - he was covering the natural world

ffs poor blokeyou can’t do it all

He's telling the truth though. Have you seen the amount of plastic in our oceans now and the effect it's having on marine life. We are killing the planet. So many species are dying because of us.

It might not be what you want to hear but it's the truth.

Yes I think he strikes right balance

Maybeitllneverhappen · 08/05/2026 22:37

I've done lots of wildlife holidays in the last few years and have been amazed at how much people love him in other countries. Guides we met in Borneo, Costa Rica and South Africa all wanted to talk to us about him and said how much they admired him. We love him in our house.

It’s a nice thread and the majority of responses are nice too.

There are a handful of posters who’ve said they don’t like him but most of those it’s through jealously and most of the others there’s no real reason why they dislike him.

I stand my ground that he is one of the most liked people in the country.

Then there is Monty!

I think he’s blotted his copy book though

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 08/05/2026 22:41

My dad is a professor of biology (zoological sciences) and worked with him as an advisor on one of his Nature programmes (can't remember which one - i think it was about birds as my dad is an expert on birds and bird song, their communication, ways that they mate, bird brains etc).

I think he said that he thought David was a likeable person, but I don't remember what else specifically he said.

Ooh, I must ask him now lol 😆 😂

NewspaperTaxis · 08/05/2026 22:42

I heard from someone who works at the BBC that a lot of animals have been made to sign an NDA - when he dies it's all going to come out, apparently.
