Does anyone dislike David Attenborough

I’m just wondering if there is anyone who dislikes David Attenborough.

I genuinely think he’s one of the very few people that everyone likes.
No matter how old, what class, what culture etc all I’ve ever heard is how much they love him.

It’s his 100th birthday today and if you google his name you’ll see.

I thought I’d do a poll incase anyone was too afraid of admitting they don’t like him 🤣

I think he could have spoken out about climate change years ago. Why bother now. He chose to keep his mouth shut cos he worked for the BBC. It's doesn't sit right with me people would have listened to him sooner. So I don't have him on a pedestal but he is not at the very top of my list of people in the public eye that pee me off.

I knew one person in Leicestershire - who, had he lived, would be 94 now- who spoke very highly of the Attenborough family supporting youngsters in the 30's.
I have a friend who worked with him on Planet Earth and he says that Sir D was far more interested in the 'back room boys' than many current wildlife presenters.
Mind you, I'm no judge. I'm a republican but despite this, I still felt sentimental when QE2 died just because of what she had seen and what she represented over so many decades.
I guess I'm neutral, I don't watch nature programs but even so I recognise some of SirD's iconic clips.

Yes probably becuase the wildlife presenters we have now don’t do half or if and have time to go on reality shows - he would t be interested - he’s be more interested in the back room boys doing it for love

I love what QE2 represented - I had so many friends always slagging off DOE - it was only when he died they realised all the things he had quietly done and started to admire him - so sad

godmum56 · 08/05/2026 21:21

I don't dislike him but never watch his wildlife or other programs. I have a rooted dislike of seeing things eating things or narrow escapes. (yeah yeah I know "what about cookery programs") I know things have to eat other things to live. I have seen my dogs kill rats, a hawk come down in my garden and take a feeding starling and of course the garden birds eating insects and taking them back to their nests. I still don't want to watch it for entertainment and don't feel I need it for education. I think the CGI ones are very slick and clever but they just do not interest me.

I thought it said 'dislike' not 'like' in the poll. Dont count my no vote!! I adore him.

Sorry my mistake!

The thread title was a rhetorical question.

I thought putting ‘Do you dislike him?’ sounded more confusing than ‘Do you like him?’

I’m going to ignore the poll results anyway ad you’re not the only one to make that mistake and some posters are putting no, even though they say they’re on the fence.

are you saying we should die for having the temerity to dislike a tv presenter ? really ? or what does 'get off the planet' mean?

Edited

🤣🤣🤣
As much as I love him, no I don't think anyone should die. Jesus 🤣
It's just a saying, untwist your panties and listen to some David Attenborough 👌

I love him but he is a very privileged male - a humble one and one that’s given more back than his taken

but you can’t get away from that a women or let alone a person of colour could not have down the same thing because of the system not lack of talent

Jane Goodall. Bloody amazing. Wonderful woman.

Dion Fossey, biruté Galdikas, the many women scientists who investigate animal communication.

Admittedly it’s much harder for women, always, everywhere, and it’s actually getting worse. Was it Judi Dench who said she wouldn’t have been able to get started now due to the reemphasis on women’s looks? Or some other famous actress.

On the contrary I think he is very humble about it - he knows he can’t change it alone and isn’t that arrogant to think he can - like bloody bob geldofd and live aid for instance - he seems to accept we might ruin ourselves

perhaps he didn’t speak out until he was certain - it isn’t a given even now

He is the literal embodiment of national treasure. He is the closest thing to a non religious saint there could be. Who could possibly not like him!

Someone said non British people. Probably could come across as a bit colonialist

no thanks i dont suffer from insomnia

happysunr1se · 08/05/2026 21:24

I just don't like how he's always spying on animals, just leave them alone!

Would you like someone spying on you when you're doing it?

Also I don't like how excessively emotive the voice over narration and accompanying music is, it's manipulative and fake so nope, not for me.

No. He couldn’t be bothered.

Sorry to burst the trendy mythos (not really). I much prefer real environmentalists.

David Attenborough has betrayed the living world he loves | George Monbiot

The presenter’s BBC films have generated complacency and ignorance, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

A bit!!!

he would have been viewed as the epitomy of colonialism - but he is much more and I think/imagine was probably accepted over time

Sweetpea333 · 08/05/2026 21:26

I can't stand him! The cameraman on his programmes are far more useful. Don't get me started on the voice...

HoraceCope · 08/05/2026 21:26

His programmes have been fantastic, incredible, inspirational

inmyhair · 08/05/2026 21:27

I thought it was just me who couldn't stand him, I really can't.

His programs are all doom and gloom. We're all going to die out, kill off all the species, humans are awful, blah blah blah. So so negative I have to turn him off.

RafaistheKingofClay · 08/05/2026 21:27

BlamBlamb · 08/05/2026 21:16

Do you have any links about this?

I’d imagine this is to do with his being a proponent of population control in order to protect the planet and fix the damage we’ve done to it. The argument usually being because the largest population growth is in the developed world it is also Racist.

Suspect there are a number of problems with this argument. Not least that it makes anyone who is pro choice or is ok with the use of birth control a eugenicist. I’d imagine most of the people making it don’t have half a dozen kids.

DungareesTrombonesDinos · 08/05/2026 21:28

I love him. I think the fact that animals love him too (e.g the gorillas) also shows that he has a beautiful soul ❤️

Omg it’s George monbiot - no thanks!

it’s the guardian ffs

id believe David over them any day

and as I said still not a given - can’t imagine would compromise his principles but then again if he didn’t so what - I don’t think it’s a right or wrong situation

he doesn’t also need to be perfect all the time - what he has done is immense - there is a weighing up for him and for us

hea a naturalist by the way - and wildlife
presenter

don’t use the guardian for the truth ffs or any other paper

No, it has nothing to do with colonialism.
It’s just that he’s not a national treasure to us. We didn’t grow up with him and his accent is a bit grating for some people. He’s just not especially on our radar the way he seems to be to British people.

The One principle he never betrayed was what was good for David Attenborough.

I suggest you look up Gerald Durrell, of Jane Goodall. And instead of ‘being a dick’ learn to think for yourself instead of being told what is trendy. But that fight is sadly lost in this age of the world.

Jamclag · 08/05/2026 21:32

On a professional level, I think he has done an amazing job raising awareness about the natural world and conservation. He has a way of communicating the sheer wonder and importance of the natural world that cuts through regardless of where people sit in terms of environmental activism.

Having said all that, on a personal level I also think he has lived a long life doing exactly what he loves (which many men of his generation and class did - he admits this readily himself) which is a great privilege that few people can share. I would also reserve judgement on his character until I had spoken to his wife, who I imagine had to carry the lion's share of family responsibilities while he was out of the country for long periods of time having marvelous adventures...

Absolutely - those tapes would have been confiscated by the Iraqis police but they swapped some blanks in - amazing isn’t it
