Does anyone dislike David Attenborough

I’m just wondering if there is anyone who dislikes David Attenborough.

I genuinely think he’s one of the very few people that everyone likes.
No matter how old, what class, what culture etc all I’ve ever heard is how much they love him.

It’s his 100th birthday today and if you google his name you’ll see.

I thought I’d do a poll incase anyone was too afraid of admitting they don’t like him 🤣

Not that many people use their privilege to campaign for wildlife, though.

Oh yes they do !!
especially when when they are paid handsomely for it, jetted all over the world and looked after well !!

come on - he’s a jobbing presenter not a saint 😂😂

if he was female he would have been faded out by now ….

I don't like him. I don't like nature programmes because they're boring. He takes the limelight away from the film crew and producers who take the risks because he's only doing the voice overs these days. He might not even write them himself.

I don't get why everyone thinks he's so amazing and living to 100 is a happy genetic accident.

You're full of the milk of human kindness, aren't you.

On a professional level, I think he has done an amazing job raising awareness about the natural world and conservation. He has a way of communicating the sheer wonder and importance of the natural world that cuts through regardless of where people sit in terms of environmental activism.

Having said all that, on a personal level I also think he has lived a long life doing exactly what he loves (which many men of his generation and class did - he admits this readily himself) which is a great privilege that few people can share. I would also reserve judgement on his character until I had spoken to his wife, who I imagine had to carry the lion's share of family responsibilities while he was out of the country for long periods of time having marvelous adventures...

Absolutely - to me that’s the privileged bit - I think like John Simpson he admits he was far from a good father - and for DA it’s a regret and John Simpson I believe

yea his wife totally picked up the slack - he must have always been away or be thinking about work when at home - it’s interesting we never see his kids - they don’t seem to be featuring In Thai programme either - I think his son is in similar profession but in Australia - wonder if he went to get away or establish his own reputation

yes he got to sink himself into his love while a women did the remaining mundane practical holding the family bit - sad

That sums it up for me too @BeaPerry.
I'm sure someone will come along and call us bitter and jealous. I think a lot of people forget that he has been a TV presenter funded by us for most of his career.

HoraceCope · 08/05/2026 21:38

It's great his kids are not shown

completely way off and wrong - you can see a mile off he’s not like that - he’s given so much and continues to

it is quite a genetic accident - plenty of privileged people die In their 70s and I don’t know of any other still making programmes at 100 - I bet even now he does fa more than just narrate

I love him. I think the fact that animals love him too (e.g the gorillas) also shows that he has a beautiful soul ❤️

Agree with this.
And am I the only one who thinks he was a bit of a looker back in the day 🤔 😍

They seem so bitter and ignorant

WaryCrow · 08/05/2026 21:41

There’s loads of women - and men - doing the small constant work that really matters and spreading wildlife education where they can, volunteering in the local wildlife trusts.

Do look up your local wildlife trusts, they’re great.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 08/05/2026 21:42

I do like him but I can't watch his programmes any more as the inevitable jeopardy stresses me out.

TonTonMacoute · 08/05/2026 21:43

I met him. About 30 years ago now, but he was lovely. It was a work situation and he was genuinely interested in talking to us underlings and hearing what we had to say. He has a steely core though, you don't get anywhere without that.

BeaPerry · 08/05/2026 21:43

Millymollymandy4 · 08/05/2026 21:39

And not paid for a lot of it

Being able to work for free / travel the world for good causes - comes from a place of Privilege !!

Erm isn’t that his daughter sat next to him? She works with him so he can’t have been completely terrible.

lilybit2025 · 08/05/2026 21:44

I honestly don't know how anyone can dislike David Attenborough?

Hoork · 08/05/2026 21:44

I love him and so did my grandma! I remember when I was younger showing a David Attenborough documentary to a friend on a play date and she looked bored and asked if we could watch cartoons! 🤣

I’d imagine this is to do with his being a proponent of population control in order to protect the planet and fix the damage we’ve done to it. The argument usually being because the largest population growth is in the developed world it is also Racist.

Suspect there are a number of problems with this argument. Not least that it makes anyone who is pro choice or is ok with the use of birth control a eugenicist. I’d imagine most of the people making it don’t have half a dozen kids.

Yeah, usually when people say things like “we need less people, especially Africans” it’s just obvious they care about the planet

HoraceCope · 08/05/2026 21:47

So did Elvis.

MrsLeonFarrell · 08/05/2026 21:48

Nothing against him as a person but I've always found his breathy delivery annoying.
