Are you still using your first mobile phone number?

TheStudioWasFilled · 06/05/2026 16:56

My mobile phone number is the first (and only) mobile phone number I've ever had. I got it before the providers inserted the '7' after the 0 to the numbers who didn't have it. So that's nearly 30 years ago I guess.

Are you still using your first mobile phone number? I thought I was unusual but apparently quite a few people are still on their first. Are you?

I am stunned at the poll result. I don't know a single soul who still has the same mobile phone number that they had when had on their first mobile phone. Most people I know had their first mobile phone 26-28 years ago. Some have had the same number for 10-15 years, (since the early to mid 2010s.) But not the same once since the late 1990s! That's batshit.

Why batshit

no need to change my number

I was with cellnet I think , then o2 for decades and swapped to lebara last year. And kept number

GreenMarigold · 06/05/2026 23:15

Yes, late 90s. I remember going into the phone shop and choosing a ‘good’ number off the screen. People often remark on it as it’s got a good repetition and rhythm!

rainbowsparkle28 · 06/05/2026 23:25

2nd number (from my recollection?!) - funnily enough my first number just came to mind rent free after having not thought about it for years and could remember it. Current number have had for a long time (decade plus I reckon) and now would keep it if changed phone or provider as a pain to learn and share with everyone new number so will keep the same one!

Barkleyspaubles · 06/05/2026 23:29

I have had mine since 1997

TheGirlInTheGreenDress · 06/05/2026 23:39

Yes! Same phone number, PIN, and email address since I was 15, so nearly 30 years. Crikey.

purplecorkheart · 06/05/2026 23:52

Yes, more than 27 years ago.It was a green Nokia and the gentleman who was selling it to me went through aload of sim card numbers and suggested what one would be easy to remember/use 27 years later I have the same number. I have never had reason. to change that number but appreciate that I have never been in that position where I had to.

SonyaLoosemore · 07/05/2026 00:33

Of course, it's my phone number.

vieve26 · 07/05/2026 01:01

Yes, same phone number since 1997!

KojaksLollipop · 07/05/2026 01:12

I’ve had the same number since 1995 when I started working for one of the mobile networks.

SENsupportplease · 07/05/2026 01:14

My first UK number yes

donotmissyourchancetoblow · 07/05/2026 01:16

No i think it’s my third one. The first two were hard ones to rhyme off and I thought it was a faff to change it then I got this one and I’ve had it for about 22 years

Yes, I have had mine since 1999/2000 when I got my first phone. I have changed emails before but not mobile phone number.

OK, it's batshit (to me) because I don't know a single soul in real life, who has the same mobile phone number that they've had since they had their first mobile phone - in the mid to late 1990s, as many posters on this thread say they have.

I even know a number of businesses who have changed numbers in the past 30 years, but it seems a LOT of Mumsnetters have had the same mobile phone number for 3 decades. (And it's the very first number they ever had.)

Some say since 1995. I didn't even know anyone with a mobile phone in 1995! I had my 2 DC around mid-late 1990s and not one single woman in the hospital (in the 10 days I was there) had a mobile phone. Or any of their visitors, or the staff... When I was at work in the mid-late 1990s, no-one at work had one. Also, none of my friends, aquaintances, or neighbours, or family members. It was 2001 before DH and I got one. Many people had one by 2003-2004. Certainly not 1995-1996.

Parallel world of Mumsnet strikes again. Grin

I am NOT saying people on here are lying, I just don't know anyone - in real life - who has had the same mobile phone number for 30 years, (and still have the first phone number they had.) As I said earlier, maybe 15-16 years yes, but no-one I know has the same mobile phone number they had in the mid 1990s. (And as I said, I didn't even know anyone who had a mobile phone then!

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/05/2026 08:51

I was with same provider for years. O2. I think years ago If you changes network you had to lose your number

where now days you get think a pac code and it moves with you

drspouse · 07/05/2026 08:53

Mine is a baby at 26 compared to some of you!
I moved back to the UK in 2000 and I've had the same number since.

BrickBiscuit · 07/05/2026 08:54

My first was an 04 number. I didn't bother keeping it when they switched off the analogue network as so few people had it.

Chuffingcupboard · 07/05/2026 08:56

Yes, since 1999. It moved network a few years back. Had a couple of work numbers over the years but never remembered them.

Very different to me then, I’ve had mine (apart from the 7 change) since I had my first mobile phone around 1999, why on earth would you change it unless you had to because of stalking, leaving the country or whatever. And a pain for everyone who has to update their contact list every time someone changes it. Fortunately for me no one I know has ever changed theirs.

CoodleMoodle · 07/05/2026 09:04

Technically yes. My very first phone was my DM's old one which already had a SIM card in it. I had that for a couple of weeks and then asked for a slightly more modern phone! I got one and a new number with it.

That would've been about 26 years ago, when I started secondary school. Same number ever since.

emnetstrozzapreti · 07/05/2026 09:08

I think mine's my second, but I've had this one since at least 2000 and I can't imagine ever having to change it! 😱 I was on BT Cellnet back then.

HoldItAllTogether · 07/05/2026 10:18

I’m not but my kids who are all in their late 20s and early 30s are. When they got their first phones I hunted down good numbers for them. Not as good as a pizza shop or taxi firm but ones that are memorable . Obviously this isn’t one but something like 07444 3454545 or 0772 222828 That type of thing.
If I did it again I think I’d actually pay for a really good number for each of them. It would be a great birthday present.

Bingbangboo · 07/05/2026 13:29

Yes. I had my first mobile in 1998 and still have the number. It is really easy to remember as it is two sets of numbers repeated. People often comment that mine is the only one they can recall without having their contacts list in front of them. I will never give it up!

FastFood · 07/05/2026 14:42

No it's my 4th, and second in the UK.
I had my first phone number back in 1998, at the time you had to change number if you changed provider, which I did. After that I kept the same number in my home country for many many years.

And then I moved to the UK, needed a sim / number to do some admin stuff, but because I didn't have a bank account yet, I couldn't be on a contract. After a week or so, I moved to a proper contract, got a new phone number. I didn't even consider keeping the first one.

I soon started using my mobile phone for work purposes (self-employed) so it was very important to me that my number didn't change. So until it was possible/easy to change provider without changing number, I stayed with my first provider (whoever the Carphone warehouse sold then!).
