Old enough to remember whole years in which I barely thought about the American president.

Not sure if this was flagged, but it seems Iran has been using stock market movements to predict US strikes

They should also be using those dodgy betting websites where you can literally bet on anything, and it’s not traceable who placed the bets.

High odds of Tehran being bombed tomorrow? That’ll be the Trump insiders with their sticky fingers inside the jam jar.

Of course Iran could place bets on the the next attack themselves. Or they could cause a lot of people to lose a lot of money by attacking out of turn and forcing a presponse that loses the bet.

Thank goodness they are a primitive people eh ?

My uncle was in the merchant navy. Had some stories ...

We could have a parallel thread about seafaring!

It could be something akin to financial poetry if Iran, or any of the affected Gulf States, were to make enough money to rebuild the lost infrastructure by playing the betting market against those who want to profit out of this war....
If, as it very much looks like, individuals with key information about the war have played the markets this way, then I hope it all comes out and they end up behind bars forever! On war rations, with crooked beds, dripping toilets and the lot. So they get a little idea of what is to sink more than 35 million people (figure estimated this week, published on the Guardian) into poverty with this senseless war!

Vance weighs in
“It would be best for the Vatican to stick to matters of morality, to stick to matters of what’s going on in the Catholic church and let the president of the United States stick to dictating American public policy,” the vice-president – a Catholic convert himself – said in on Fox News on Monday night.

Surely war IS a question of morality?

MushMonster · 14/04/2026 17:31

Well... clearly not in Trump-Vance reality.
So, we cannot expect them to stick to any morality in any conflict. It kind of explains a bit of what is going on...
Negotiations will have to hold onto $$$$, oil, goods, power.... lots of power mentioning... and more $$$$
Forget about the ethics. Wasted on this lot.....

erm..

"let the president of the United States stick to dictating American public policy"

He said dictating ?

Quiet part out loud ?

MushMonster · 14/04/2026 17:37

Oh! Dictator....
Let's take note (NOT!!!)

TheGander · 14/04/2026 17:39

He’s a weird kind of Catholic if he thinks he can instruct the Pope to be less caring, less into promoting peace and compassion for the poor and vulnerable .

It's quite possible that as a keen student of Roman history (which they much have been, all the reading about Sulla they have done) the word is being used in it's original, limited context ?

No, me neither 😀

Oh dear. The Turd is now calling Italian newspapers. How desperate is he ? Its a bit like an AIBU thread here. Where near everyone says YES, and the OP looks for the one or two posters who say NO. "Oh thanks, so I am right"

From CNN

"President Donald Trump said Pope Leo XIV doesn’t understand Iran’s nuclear threat.
He doesn’t understand and shouldn’t be talking about war, because he has no idea what’s happening,” he told the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera in a brief phone interview Tuesday.
Trump also criticized Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for calling his comments about the pope “unacceptable.”
It’s her who’s unacceptable, because she doesn’t care if Iran has a nuclear weapon and would blow up Italy in two minutes if they had the chance,” the president said.
Trump, who’s previously complimented Meloni, said he was “shocked” by the prime minister. “I thought she was brave, but I was wrong,” he said, going on to lament Italy’s lack of support in the US war with Iran and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Meloni defended her disagreements with the Trump administration on Tuesday.
“When you’re friends and have allies, especially if they’re strategic, you also have to have the courage to say when you disagree, which is what I do every day, because I believe this is beneficial for Europe, the United States, and the West in general,” she said."

I bet Starmer's glad to see the heat on someone else for a change.

RafaistheKingofClay · 14/04/2026 17:51

He is aware the catechism exists, right? Including the entire section on Catholic social teaching and just/unjust wars.

It would break my reality if Meloni retorted saying "at least Italy did fascism properly you pathetic Mango Mussolini".

E2A: If that were to happened who'd put £5 on Trump replying he was "the best fascist. People you know they come to me for fascism ...."

RafaistheKingofClay · 14/04/2026 17:54

In fairness nobody does have a clue what is happening. Not least the person in the Oval Office.

There's always got to be a whipping boy
Trump accepts liability for nothing that he does.
Always someone else's fault.

Response to @SerendipityJane on fascism.

That would be wonderfully ballsy of her. I had thought she was yet another female in thrall to Trump after the previous love in. But no, she is her own woman 💪 (I have a place in hell marked out for 'daddy' Rutte, and Starmer has one in Purgatory as he can still redeem himself).

BruceAndNosh · 14/04/2026 17:58

Anybody keeping a checklist of Trump toadies who he is now insulting because they dared to question him? He really does have the thinnest skin (and the most orange)

So I, unhappily, saw the clip where he explained the image as being a Dr - he actually added that a Dr is a healer and so it’s true really, as he does heal people - he then turned to someone and said about her husband getting amazing care - he talked of 11,600 people he had helped heal - I assume this might refer to a new hospital, or drug, or something on those lines but I don’t know.

I was, as always when I hear him, gobsmacked when he said he heals folk - it sounded almost as if he is an actual medic (or Jesus) but guess he meant in the context of being the bigliest bestest President generously improving healthcare - definitely at least a hint of personally healing imo - but apparently he just joshes with folk - according to random MAGAs on X anyway.

The woman he was talking to was the "doordash granny" - a photo op to promote the no tax on tips benefit. Not sure it's such a flex when the reason she works so hard is to pay towards her husband's cancer treatment bills. she certainly wasn't the typical sycophant:

"At Monday’s event, a White House reporter asked Simmons if she had delivered there before, suggesting that neither DoorDash nor Trump’s aides had been upfront that she was not simply a local fulfilling a delivery order.
Trump then tipped Simmons—after a reporter asked if the White House was a good tipper. Reporters spotted a $100 bill.
Trump then took the opportunity to quiz her on transgender athletes in women’s sports.
That backfired when she replied, “I really don’t have an opinion on that.” When he pushed her on it, she added, “I’m here about no tax on tips.” The president also awkwardly tried to portray Simmons as a MAGA supporter, asking her, “I think you voted for me. Do you think?” But she responded with, “Um, maybe.”
“I heard you’re a great supporter. We appreciate it,” he replied.
