Old enough to remember whole years in which I barely thought about the American president.

@MsJinks

I think the US ships are supposed to be monitoring the entire Iranian coastline to intercept ships going/leaving one of their ports - but I’m not sure where they’re doing this from - they can’t go too close.

This sort of stuff can be monitored by aircraft such as AWACS and similar intelligence gatherers and also to some extent from space...

Even just AIS I expect.

Although I remember a few years back when all PRC ships went "dark", because the PRC made a data protection law that made it illegal for non PRC servers to hold PRC data. I think it took about a week to resolve, and I don't know what happened. But for sure, fun and games are going to happen.

Well I’d think that makes better sense - yes - I can be dumb re this stuff - but guess the ships have to be close enough to set chase?

If it wasn’t so appalling I’d be fascinated watching a ship chase another one - mind I am actually just imagining Johnny depp in those films - I wouldn’t like this in reality - though wonder how it’s done still.

And what if there are more foreign ships docking/leaving than US have ships to capture them?

I’m sure I’ll learn on this thread - last thing expected to learn at 60! Apologies for my crass and ignorant thoughts on it all - actually looking forward to ‘being educated’ on this, as they say on here.

I'm sure you know this but if AIS is anything like ADS (the system aircraft tracking sites such as Flightradr eavesdrops on) then just turning the transponder off onboard makes you disappear from public view.

Not sure what the rules are in the maritime world about doing that if it works the same way but I'd assume it's possible AIS might not be reliable, at least not in that part of the world ATM.

Well, incoming international incident ahoy, it seems.

Which country is going to be the chosen one?

And back to the Dems... are they out highlighting/protesting Trump's warmongering now apparently against the whole world, never mind his Jesus post and his attack on the Pope?!

Yup I know that. And all the wrong position stuff / switching ID. But it all adds up. And if the PRC uses its data protection laws, all their ships could go dark.

Ships' masters have to comply with SOLAS regs and keep their AIS turned on except when in hostile situations, so it's likely transponders are being turned off in the SoH.

As a matter of interest, I was browsing PRC state media last year, and I noticed a "ball" thing on a photo of one of their coast guard ships. It was odd cos it had English text. I looked it up blah blah, and it was a UK North East made satellite data link. I thought that odd, but I assumed it was likely similar to planes where "approved" stuff has to be used.

And yup, re SOLAS I wonder if stuff has to also be approved to be able to sail internationally. I used to know an inspector who worked for a shipping registry, She went all over the world checking stuff like that.

RedTagAlan · 13/04/2026 16:18

I am giggling. There is a thread about the Trump as Jesus TRUTH. One comment cracked me up.

Yes, using SOLUS-approved equipment is mandatory for commercial operators, as are regular inspections.

Thank you for the new thread. I had no internet yesterday or this morning. I didn't miss much, right?!

Good info. So it will be like the Chinese COMAC jets. China could make every system, but to fly it internationally, they need to use approved. And approval for each would take years.

So same with ships. Coasters that stay in Chinese waters, China regs. International means intl rules AND approved systems ?

When I was trying to find stuff earlier on for the legal reason for seizing the Russian shadow fleet, loopholes mentioned were safety risk, environmental etc. So not conforming to SOLAS approved could also be a loophole ?

Terrribletwos · 13/04/2026 16:41

I read somewhere that most of the Chinese ships went through the SoH via " dark ships"?

There's a lot of semiconductor industry in Newton Aycliffe, not a million miles from me, including some with MOD contracts.

I rather formed the idea that these "shadow ships" are stopped, and when nobody claims them, seized. Their whole USP is that "nobody" owns them.

I guess it's rather similar to when customs find 1Kg of heroin being carried through the border crossing of a country. The owner is hardly likely to rock up and try and claim it.

I can also imagine that a lot of crew on these shadow vessels have no idea that's what they are. Until they are stopped by a navy, call the number the agent gave them and discover it's a takeaway in Peckham that doesn't open until 7pm GMT.

Iranian tweets. Wonder if Donald sees them?

This convergence shows how much the orange turd is impacting others - our foreign affairs are definitely top of the agenda - don’t think the Pope is interfering at least though 🙈

Remember the quiet of Sleepy Joe? Take sleepy over insanity and megalomania every day of the week myself.

Between Jan 2021 and Jan 2025 we used to remark now and again about how 'quiet' it was media-wise and how nice NOT to have our POTUS all over the news every.single.day.

This has being going on for years though with little indication that they have been stopped.

I would have to take issue with Irans view that the US "best" diplomats were on the case. It was JD Vance and a bottle of upholstery cleaner.
