I'm aware. He's apologised though.

Sometimes that's just not good enough. This is one of those times. If we were talking years, with demonstrable and repeated regret, MAYBE this would then merit a different conversation.

dapsnotplimsolls · 07/04/2026 14:13

Is that sufficient criteria to ban someone from visiting another country?

He’s supported Hitler and the wiping out of Jews for years. He’s exactly the sort of person who should be refused entry to the UK. I’m pleased he has.

the cancellation of the festival should be a huge warning to businesses not to allow anti semitism.

Hopefully streaming platforms will cancel his music

Wishitwas1996 · 07/04/2026 14:27

With regards to the apology having some benefit. People are constantly being allowed to contextualise their hate and mistakes to the point that it feels like we live in a world with no consequences. Apologise and be celebrated.

Look at the shit Trump unleashes every day and it’s becoming just accepted. I want to live in a country where standards of public behaviour are still upheld.

He says what maaaaany think.

That's nothing to be proud of. Thankfully many more disagree and are prepared to say so loudly.

The Free Speech fans will be tying themselves in knots.

He can and has spoken freely, but part of that is having to deal with the consequences of what you’ve spoken

I'm pleased but also amazed he has been blocked. I thought antisemitism was considered permissible racism and actually quite fashionable.

I think people have woken up after the burning of the ambulances

Floraflower3 · 07/04/2026 14:30

Antisemitism is abhorrent but wasn’t he having a manic episode when he said those things? Apologies if I’m mistaken. We punish people who are mentally ill that commit crimes so I guess this falls under that.

seazon · 07/04/2026 14:33

Why is everyone on here such a fan of censorship?

I was thinking this morning that they should let him perform if he can somehow prove he's on his meds.

No, I'm not. I don't think being a 'very unpleasant individual' is sufficient criteria for not allowing someone into a country. I think West is an arsehole but he's expressed remorse and suggested meeting with members of the Jewish community in the UK.

There are plenty of Jewish people in his own country he can talk to, if that's what he wants to do.

fartotheleftside · 07/04/2026 14:37

Bipolar and psychosis can make people say and think some really wild things, that don't have any bearing on who they are as a person.

In some ways this is a test case for how we treat people with mental health issues beyond the garden-variety palatable depression and anxiety.

I would like to see him dedicating more of his life to holocaust education and building relationships with holocaust remembrance organisations and groups, though, as a lifelong commitment.

What? That's a ludicrous suggestion.

I think you are confusing censorship with common decency.

Yet we have welcomed Trump here who has undeniably done far greater harm to the world?
Am in no way defending Kanye’s previous revolting actions, but seriously?

ArtAngel · 07/04/2026 14:40

The UK bans many people who promote and preach murderous hate -including Neo Nazis. It's different from freedom of speech amongst our own citizens.

And freedom of speech is balanced by restrictions on hate speech and speech that promotes violence.

Here is a list (out of date) of banned people List of people banned from entering the United Kingdom - Wikipedia

I don't see why he gets a free pass for being a Nazi Promoter just because he is a performer.

He has said he supports Adolf Hitler consistently over 2 decades.

OK, he has probably had extreme MH issues over 2 decades too

if he was in psychosis then I agree- he should appeal and provide the relevant evidence, and cannot be held responsible for his behaviour (and this is clear- just as someone who murders in psychosis has a legal defence against their prosecution)

im not sure all of these rants came from a psychosis, but I may be wrong.

EamonnFyre · 07/04/2026 14:43

But we don’t mind Donald Trump having tea with the King. It’s all ridiculous.

Lomonald · 07/04/2026 14:43

Good he doesn't need to be spreading his hate, the man is a liability.

He should lose the presidency and be blocked from entering the country as an aggressor. I would also block Netanyahu from entering. Trump and Netanyahu are in the same category as Putin.

But I wouldn’t argue that because we’ve let Trump in we should let in anyone who wants to come.

DoubleShotEspresso · 07/04/2026 14:44

Lemonfrost · 07/04/2026 14:38

I think you are confusing censorship with common decency.

So how do we explain or justify the hate filled weekly marches that have been permitted for so long? Why is this antisemitism acceptable in our cities, but a rapper who has apologised, following poor mental health episodes is not allowed? Why are so many of our Jewish communities so scared to leave their homes, visit their synagogue or visit central London due to vile antisemitism in the form of mass marches, ambulances being set ablaze and offensive graffiti & abuse? Why is this okay ?
Would we expect Bob Vylan (who was charged/arrested) to be allowed entry to America?

Lomonald · 07/04/2026 14:43

The King should no more be visiting the USA than Russia at this particular moment in time.

I believe a UK Jewish organisation has said they'd be willing to meet with him but only if he doesn't perform. Reason being they want to see sustained remorse and reflection, not something performative just to enable him to do the festival. I think that's a fair suggestion and if he wants to rehabilitate himself long term I think he should accept it.
