Women who can't or won't use a lawnmower!

Bettercallsalli · 06/04/2026 15:03

Just cut my lawns. Neighbour in her 40s commented she has asked her husband to do hers forr 3 days.
Woman up and do it yourself! What am i missing?

I always used to enjoy mowing our lawn then my husband took over when I slipped a disc in my back. It took two years for me to have surgery and recover enough to be able to do things like that again and now he won’t let me use his new mower 🙄

Seawolves · 06/04/2026 16:14

DH always did ours because he loved doing it and took great pride in keeping everything looking lovely. After he died I managed to kill his beloved petrol mower, I cried so much that day it felt like losing him all over again

But yes, I am perfectly capable of cutting the grass and do so now he's no longer here.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 06/04/2026 16:14

I can't cut the grass as I can't start the mower. I've tried but I just don't have the strength to pull the cord fast enough.

Orangepate · 06/04/2026 16:14

We had a petrol mower for years, I could never pull the cord that started the thing. Now we have an electric mower I do all the mowing.

I always imagine you as one of those Green Men carvings you see in medieval churches, with foliage sprouting out of your face. (But female).

😂

Lawn has been cut now and edges trimmed.

We don't have a big garden and I use a cordless mower. It is a game changer.

Gardening is usually my job because I enjoy it so it doesn't feel like a chore to me. My favourite pasttime on a warm summer evening is to potter around the garden deadheading the roses.

HotChocolateBubbleBath · 06/04/2026 16:26

My DH cuts the grass most of the time but I do it sometimes, if its looking long and I don’t have time I will remind him, it’s never just 3 days until he does it, it’s more like a week. Once I’ve asked him there’s not a chance in hell I’ll give in and do it!

Maybe she does 90% of the household tasks and just wants him to do one damn thing.

Maybe she has physical limitations. When my DH couldn’t mow because he got sick, I literally couldn’t step up and do it. I had to to hire someone.

Absolutely if I couldn't do it I would do the same, hire someone. I'm lucky that atm I can do it.

Wowsersbrowsers · 06/04/2026 16:35

My partner insisted on a mower I can't use because it's so heavy so mowing the lawn is his job...

mondaytosunday · 06/04/2026 16:39

Well if she’s the one doing the dishes every night she may think he can at least do this. And as for doing it herself - well he’s going to be very happy with that isn’t he? She’s just added another job to her list. (I do my own as I’m a widow but my son is happy to do it when he visits).

DefiantRabbit9 · 06/04/2026 17:00

If you ask your partner to do something they should do it. It's not that hard.

vickylou78 · 06/04/2026 17:05

I don't mow our lawn as the mower is heavy and I struggle turning it around at each end. Also it's heavy so I struggle getting it out of the shed etc. I'm sure I could look into getting a lighter smaller mower so I could do it. But I do most of cooking, cleaning and shopping so DiY and mowing are for my husband to do! I'm 48.

Pandasarethebest · 06/04/2026 17:06

I cut the grass in our house. I like doing it as it means its spring!

DinoLil · 06/04/2026 17:07

Can't and won't are very different.

I can't. I'm disabled. I get someone in to mow it.

Mogbiscuit · 06/04/2026 17:11

Bettercallsalli · 06/04/2026 15:11

Thanks for the opinions. My partner works away 8 weeks at a time so i guess i'm just used to doing stuff if it needs doing.
Like now i've done it, i can enjoy a glass of wine in the sun looking at my lovely freshly mown grass, while she is probably still moaning....

You have the satisfaction of feeling superior to enjoy with your chilled white wine and scent of new-mown meadow.

YourSassyPanda · 06/04/2026 17:12

I do it because my DH is a lazy gardener but make a right mess of it if I’m honest.

BansheeOfTheSouth · 06/04/2026 17:16

Leeds157 · 06/04/2026 15:07

My neighbour cuts the grass while her husband holds the cord behind her the whole time, does that count as cutting it or not?

Maybe it's hormonal but that is so sweet. Proper sharing of a task.

Shared this with boyfriend his response was "I would but you don't even own a lawnmower". He's wrong, I do. I just happen to have a gardener 😅

Weeelokthen · 06/04/2026 17:20

My female neighbours either side are horrified that I am able to empty bins and sometimes take them to the kerb on bin day 😂
We are not rigid with rules around household chores, with the exception of ironing, thats the mans job 😁

Roundofapause · 06/04/2026 17:23

Perhaps she does all the other jobs for the home!? My husband always does the grass. I have just once. It isn't that I can't or won't. But when I do pretty much all the cleaning in the home and many more household tasks, then my husband can do something too! We tend to stick to the same tasks so he has his and I have mine. I'm sure that's probably what most couples do.

Roundofapause · 06/04/2026 17:25

JoaoJoao · 06/04/2026 15:05

Dunno. I’ve only come across this idea of ‘pink’ or ‘blue’ tasks on here. I cut our grass. Our entire garden is my job. DH does all the food shopping and cooking.

So you do have pink and blue jobs then.

Billybagpuss · 06/04/2026 17:25

Branleuse · 06/04/2026 15:07

Maybe it's one of his only few jobs and he's still being a dick about it?

This, in our house it’s one of the few things dh actually took proper ownership of, so I’m buggered if I’m setting a precedent and doing it.

cinquanta · 06/04/2026 17:25

I don’t need to “up and do it myself” because my husband does it. Always has.

Bryonyberries · 06/04/2026 17:26

I love mowing the lawn, I find it much more satisfying than house work. However, I couldn’t use our petrol mower as I could never seem to pull the string quite hard/fast enough to get it going. After my ex left I bought an electric one. Takes longer I expect but I don’t mind the task.

Tryagain26 · 06/04/2026 17:26

My husband always cuts the grass. It's just something he has always done. I wouldn't tell him when to cut it though. I leave that up to him.

Roundofapause · 06/04/2026 17:26

Bettercallsalli · 06/04/2026 15:06

@Whenindoubthugitout but she wants it done and it's clearly annoying her so rather thsn nag for 3 days, just crack on surely!

So the man gets away with doing nothing? Surely you wouldn't accept that? I wouldn't with my husband. If you let them be lazy, they will be lazy. No woman should put up with that.

TryAndGetOutOfThat · 06/04/2026 17:27

My husband cuts our grass. I do the cleaning and ironing.
