Women who can't or won't use a lawnmower!

Just cut my lawns. Neighbour in her 40s commented she has asked her husband to do hers forr 3 days.
Woman up and do it yourself! What am i missing?

I enjoy mowing my lawn - I love the smell and the results last longer than hoovering!
I think it’s fairly normal for couples to share out jobs and I don’t think it’s a good idea for the person who is frustrated by the job not being done to just do it. I have a friend who decided that about her teenager’s room. She thought as it was annoying her, she should just tidy it. Her child is now in her twenties and still doesn’t tidy her room.

Lawn cutting is my job I love it. Although my 8 year old really enjoys it too so we share. We have a wonderful light lawn mower that's cordless and has rechargeable batteries same as drill batteries. I have the same brand for the hedge cutter Strimmer, mini chainsaw I love it. I'm like a one woman transformer in the garden. Every tool for the job. My dh has the laundry as 'his job' that's far more odious to me. Obviously we are both capable of both and will switch up or team up when necessary.

Our neighbour has a robot lawn mower which I'd absolutely love so it would be short 24 7 and the robot looks very cute. Ride on lawnmowers are very fun too. My children would definitely take over the job completely then.

Can I ask what lawn mower it is? I'm wanting to get a cordless one, but worried they might be a bit heavy for my back.
Thanks

flame me now but in a lot of households it’s seen as a man job by default because the main care giver is normally the woman so being at home more they pick up more of the house tasks leaving things like this to the man.
and yes this is a sweeping generalisation

JMSA · 07/04/2026 10:50

I am happy to outsource that particular job because I don’t want to do it.
I have no interest in gardening and my next house - when the kids have left home - will not have a blade of bloody grass in sight.

JMSA · 07/04/2026 10:51

No man here though - I need to pay someone to do it!

Morepositivemum · 07/04/2026 10:55

Badbadbunny

They probably weren’t fifteen years ago when we bought ours, I doubt we’d have gone for anything other than the lowest cost one!!!

Gizlotsmum · 07/04/2026 10:56

We have a petrol mower as it needs multiple extension leads to run an electric mower over our garden and the petrol felt safer ( no cable to cut/ no overloading of an extension leads)

Same here.

I have been single for more than 10 years now. And I have never used a lawnmower.

And I have a lot of grass.

I pay someone to do it, as I can use the time it takes to do way more productive things.

I have this. It's very light, cuts through thick weeds without issue, and charges really quickly. The only gripe I have with it is the adjustable handle. I like it quite high, and I find that if you don't get it at exactly the right angle when you tighten it, the handle slowly drops, and I have to stop to re-adjust it.

I've it 3 years now, which is far longer than any of our petrol mowers lasted without needing to be repaired or replaced.

Savvysix1984 · 07/04/2026 12:25

we have a big lawn and my dh is faster and better at mowing it than me. I’m better at painting though. We just play to our strengths.

Questionsquestions121 · 07/04/2026 12:58

I can’t do it due to a shoulder injury. Could be may reasons she doesn’t mow

KeeleyJ · 07/04/2026 12:59

Because I do 100% of household admin and life organising, grass cutting isn't my job.

Thanks for the opinions. My partner works away 8 weeks at a time so i guess i'm just used to doing stuff if it needs doing.
Like now i've done it, i can enjoy a glass of wine in the sun looking at my lovely freshly mown grass, while she is probably still moaning....

Awesome that you're so much cooler and more capable than the other girls. Pat on the back.

Fibrous · 07/04/2026 13:22

Lots of people here saying they are not strong enough. Mowing will make you strong! I say this as a middle aged short arse who does lots of mowing. It's great for the abs.

A lot of women do most things in the house, she's probably busy womaning up and doing all the fucking laundry, cleaning and cooking.

Agreed.
Anyone (including any woman) can use a lawnmower, but many of us know if you show you are at all capable you end up picking up another job permanently.......

Our front garden is my responsibility and the back, his. He wouldn't let me use the petrol mower because it was too heavy, idiosyncratic and difficult. He then got an electric mower and convinced himself I'd electrocute myself or cut the cord or something, so wouldn't let me use it. I'd ask repeatedly for him to cut the front lawn. It never happened.

I then dug most of it up and planted a herb garden and bought myself a strimmer. I can now trim the grass ad libitum. The garden politics are difficult. He invariably starts the season off enthusiastically and plants lots of weeds in pots then doesn't look after them. He tells me he will make plant medicine out of the weeds random plants. They seed themselves everywhere and look a mess. I have to wait until he's lost interest in the garden then I go out and dig them up and throw them out. He has also planted two mistletoes on my apple tree. They're getting too big and he won't let me cut them down. I do it secretly and he then threatens to cut the apple tree's branches off! He's a bloody menace.

Maybe you need a patio 😉🤫😀

ChasingTheDuck · 07/04/2026 14:16

I'm perfectly capable of mowing the lawn. But for me it's like housework outside. As I live on my own I pay my neighbours 22yo son to do it. He's happy for the cash and I'm happy to sit on my sofa whilst it's being done.

hiredandsqueak · 07/04/2026 14:17

I've never used a lawnmower in my life and have no intention of starting tbh. I pay someone to cut mine and consider it money well spent.

Doesn’t it depress you that you have to pretend to be incompetent in order not to have an unfair split of household gruntwork?
