Just cut my lawns. Neighbour in her 40s commented she has asked her husband to do hers forr 3 days.
Woman up and do it yourself! What am i missing?

I can use a lawnmower. I wanted a small flat block when we built. DH was incredibly stubborn on wanting this huge, sloping block that's a nightmare to maintain. Wouldn't budge. So it's his problem.

I do almost everything else. DH also needs instructions. Sat on his arse all day while I was out, waited until I got home to ask what needs doing. At least if the lawn is his responsibility I don't have to manage it.

I’ve never mowed our lawn in my life. I guess I could, but it’s a big heavy looking petrol mower and I’m not known for my strength.

I wonder why so many posters here have big heavy petrol mowers? We’ve always had electric which are far lighter and easier to use. Current one is rechargeable battery powered so no issues with trailing cables, not that it was a problem with previous mowers. Is it a “man” thing where they need something big and heavy to prove they’re a big man?

Spiders in the shed

Yes🤣

I used to mow my own lawn and tend to the garden before I met and married dh. This is his job now, as he’d do fuck all else. He does the bins and cooks once a week at a push. But that’s about it. Oh yeah, and the obligatory push of the hoover around the downstairs, because we clearly don’t have rooms upstairs or a hallway. Puffs his chest out to receive a medal.

Our garden is like a football pitch but not suitable for a ride on. We have a battery one as well as a petrol one. The battery only lasts for about a quarter of the time needed. The petrol one also has a much bigger cutting width so it can be done in half the time.

Morepositivemum · 07/04/2026 08:23

I’m not physically strong enough to turn the lawnmower on. It sounds ridiculous but I can’t😅

MrTiddlesTheCat · 07/04/2026 08:26

We also have a robot mower but it's the laziest bloody robot I've ever come across. It comes out for 5 minutes and then decides to go for a lie down under the guise of 'rain' when there's no bloody rain.

I think most people just buy the cheapest thing they can find, mowing the lawn isn’t a huge thing to most people and it’s not something people even want to buy, it’s an extra expense, necessary but not used regularly enough to not be annoying that you had to pay anything!!

Shedmistress · 07/04/2026 08:33

We have a robot to do most of the lawn but I get quite excited if the edges need a mow as it means mowings to mulch the veg with. We have a huge petrol mower and a huge garden to boot.

Dragonflytamer · 07/04/2026 08:38

Easy way to solve it. We brought one of those sit on ones - now it such good everyone wants to mow the lawn.

dudsville · 07/04/2026 08:45

You are making an assumption and then responding to that. Better to be curious and leave it at that. Better still, is this worth your head space? You may be right, she may think of it as a man's job, but what would you do with that information? One of my neighbours is a religious family, I'm an atheist, we leave each other to it, though we're each certain enough that the other is wrong, and we get on well.

Pleasenotequila · 07/04/2026 08:47

We have a robot lawn mower and a robot hoover. The day they invent the robot toilet cleaner will be the happiest day of my life.

QueenStevie · 07/04/2026 08:53

DH didn't do ours because he thinks gardens should be left au natural for the insects and wildlife and also he has dreadful, debilitating hay fever so when he did mow the lawn he was pretty much out of action for the rest of the day.

I did it for a while but was fed up with it being another job for me. So now we pay someone to do it. Marital harmony has been restored.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/04/2026 09:02

I can do it, and often have done, but it’s largely dh’s job.

He, on the other hand, wouldn’t know where to start to plant up all our pots and baskets, which I’ll be doing very soon. TBH he barely knows a crocus from a cauliflower.

TheUsualChaos · 07/04/2026 09:07

Our lawn mower is big and heavy. I've never used it and don't plan to. DH never does the food shop and that needs to be done far more often than the lawn so it feels more than fair to me!

Big garden needs a big mower!

Badballerina · 07/04/2026 09:17

we've a ride on . DH drives it. Workload is split evenly - I just don't do much gardening

LittleEmily · 07/04/2026 09:29

I got a rental car, but the rental company charged me extra hidden fees making me feel sad for renting a car.

Fizbosshoes · 07/04/2026 09:34

I used to mow the lawn with our heavy petrol lawn mower. Then DH rearranged the garden in a way that made it more awkward and difficult to get the mower out of the shed and into the lawn, so I dont do it anymore

Big garden needs a big mower!

I always thought this, and we had big heavy petrol mowers for years, but they kept breaking down. I have a large garden, with thick, thorny weeds coming under the fences.

I got fed up of repairing or replacing the petrol mower, so I bought a battery-powered one, not expecting it to actually work, and thinking I would need to do most of it with the weed-whacker, but it's just as effective as the petrol mowers have been. I have to have one battery on charge while I'm using one, as the full garden uses one and a half charges, but it charges quickly, so that's not an issue. It's so much lighter and easier to handle, and I don't have to remember to go to the petrol station every few weeks.

MightyGoldBear · 07/04/2026 09:50

Lawn cutting is my job I love it. Although my 8 year old really enjoys it too so we share. We have a wonderful light lawn mower that's cordless and has rechargeable batteries same as drill batteries. I have the same brand for the hedge cutter Strimmer, mini chainsaw I love it. I'm like a one woman transformer in the garden. Every tool for the job. My dh has the laundry as 'his job' that's far more odious to me. Obviously we are both capable of both and will switch up or team up when necessary.

Our neighbour has a robot lawn mower which I'd absolutely love so it would be short 24 7 and the robot looks very cute. Ride on lawnmowers are very fun too. My children would definitely take over the job completely then.

This 💯.
I also have a fairly large garden and enjoy lawn mowing, but I wouldn't be without my battery powered mower. I do exactly the same process with charging the batteries too.

Although at the moment my biggest issue is who gets to cut my lawn first, me or the deer that feel that they have rights of access to my garden 🙄.

But petrol mowers are generally more expensive than the lighter weight electric/battery ones.

I've never cut the grass. I do enough so it's my sons job. HTH.

Big lawns! DM has a big heavy petrol lawnmower because her garden is too big for an extension cord to reach, when she bought it powerful rechargeable lawnmowers weren’t a thing (they were all cheapy flymo things), and it is much quicker to cut with a bigger and powerful mower.

She is in her late 70s and very petite, so most women would be able to manage it.

I have a garden 1/4 the size of hers so I do have an electric one - the extension cord still only just reaches though. It’s hard to find one more than 50m long.
