Adverts that have stuck with you

We currently have a free trial of a streaming service, so are stuck with adverts for the first time in a long time. It got me thinking - what adverts have really stuck with you over the years? I remember saying how awful the 118 and GoCompare adverts were, and my Dad said to me “well they did their job then, didn’t they?” Because they got me remembering their brand and what the service was!

I’m sure this has been done before - but humour me pleases and share with me adverts that stuck with you. I wonder if there’s a theme of particular adverts being truly memorable for all, or any that random people remember that jog a memory in someone else.

Here’s mine:

Milkyway - Red car & blue car race (I still remember all the words to the song)
Tango - You know, when you’ve been Tango’d
118 118 - Got your number
Go Compare - stupid opera man
Yellow Pages - JR Hartley and the other one where the lad had the party and cleans his house to find the scratch in the table
Dolmio puppets - Whensa your Dolmio Day?

There was one about a breakfast cereal where they were on holiday or done thing singing a song - some of the lyrics were “I think there’s a rack by your toes. But what about the BRAND NAME that’s a different matter, here’s what they all reply. They’re tasty, tasty, very very tasty. They’re very tasty” I’m thinking All Bran or something like that? If anyone remembers please help me!

Another one - “there’s a moose, loose about this hoose” - some sort of sweet think?

Looking forward to seeing some others!

The cartoon boy advert years ago, then at the end it was a real child unconscious on the floor with the caption saying "real children don't bounce back" it was shockingly upsetting. Everyone was talking about it 💔

The John Smiths adverts with the Jack Russell jumping up and down, loved it when adverts were funny and made you feel good despite not wanting to go buy the product.

BT with Maureen Lipman and the Ology’s

Fly fishing by J.R. Hartley

All 80’s ads, it feels like that was the best era for ads

The John Smith's ad where a 2 groups of men are waiting at a bar. 1st group says, "We've been in the Artic for the last 6 months, freezing cold and every night spent dreaming of a JS pint"

2nd group "We've been down south"
1st group "After you, lads!"

And of course, the aliens Smash ad "And then they smash them all to bits!"

Eskarina1 · 04/04/2026 14:06

We annoy our children because if one of us says Bird's-eye potato waffles, the other has to say they're waffly versatile.

They did at one point know all the words to the red car and the blue car and they love Accrington Stanley - who are they?

The resurgence of adverts is annoying because there doesn't feel like there's any skill in it. We saw a red bull advert where a cartoon dog was wandering round, something happened and the old "red bull gives you wings" was played. My boys were so puzzled because there were no wings. They'd forgotten the ad by the end of the ad break. I've not seen one I'll be discussing 35 years later.

The milkybar kid adverts have stuck with me, less because I liked them than that it was a cultural thing. Who's the next milky bar kid going to be. Also, the song was catchy.

firstofallimadelight · 04/04/2026 14:07

The andrex puppy adds from the days of actual puppies.

the car safety wear your seatbelt advert where the person in the back isn’t wearing their seatbelt and crushes the driver.

That terrified me - something like "Julie knew the person who killed her"

These Harvey adverts are the best by Thinkbox

Genius adverts these are.

Also I loved The Cog advert from Honda. I’m sure that won an award.

topcat2014 · 04/04/2026 14:12
