Adverts that have stuck with you

We currently have a free trial of a streaming service, so are stuck with adverts for the first time in a long time. It got me thinking - what adverts have really stuck with you over the years? I remember saying how awful the 118 and GoCompare adverts were, and my Dad said to me “well they did their job then, didn’t they?” Because they got me remembering their brand and what the service was!

I’m sure this has been done before - but humour me pleases and share with me adverts that stuck with you. I wonder if there’s a theme of particular adverts being truly memorable for all, or any that random people remember that jog a memory in someone else.

Here’s mine:

Milkyway - Red car & blue car race (I still remember all the words to the song)
Tango - You know, when you’ve been Tango’d
118 118 - Got your number
Go Compare - stupid opera man
Yellow Pages - JR Hartley and the other one where the lad had the party and cleans his house to find the scratch in the table
Dolmio puppets - Whensa your Dolmio Day?

There was one about a breakfast cereal where they were on holiday or done thing singing a song - some of the lyrics were “I think there’s a rack by your toes. But what about the BRAND NAME that’s a different matter, here’s what they all reply. They’re tasty, tasty, very very tasty. They’re very tasty” I’m thinking All Bran or something like that? If anyone remembers please help me!

Another one - “there’s a moose, loose about this hoose” - some sort of sweet think?

Looking forward to seeing some others!

The John Smiths adverts with the Jack Russell jumping up and down, loved it when adverts were funny and made you feel good despite not wanting to go buy the product.

BT with Maureen Lipman and the Ology’s

Fly fishing by J.R. Hartley

All 80’s ads, it feels like that was the best era for ads

crimsonholly · 04/04/2026 12:28

I loved the creature comfort ads but so many people think they were for gas and they were for electricity

Crikeyalmightey · 04/04/2026 12:30

I loved the Smash advert with the little silver aliens laughing at the earthlings making mashed potatoes. Still makes me laugh now. "They peel them with their metal knives, then they smash them all to bits".

Tillow4ever · 04/04/2026 12:31

Oh I remembered another - the British Gas advert about his much water you needed to use to keep heating costs down… just enough water to cover your veg…. Same applies when having a bath!

The andrex puppy adds from the days of actual puppies.

the car safety wear your seatbelt advert where the person in the back isn’t wearing their seatbelt and crushes the driver.

Tillow4ever · 04/04/2026 12:33

And of course the BT advert with the phone playing Karmachameleon and Recall from London’s Burning being the one the friends were asking to “do it again” (I.e recall them - a definite Easter Egg for LB fans).

It’s a bit depressing but the one where the teenager in the backseat isn’t wearing his seatbelt and crushes his mum in the drivers seat there’s a car crash.

Don’t know how real it is but it’s really stuck with me.

Omg yes. That seatbelt one terrified me! I remember having strong words with my sister reusing to drive her if she didn’t put her seatbelt on because of that advert. “She knew her killer.” Then something about he stood up and just sat hack down afterwards.

brilliantly done!

Do you remember the little girl who’d been hit by a car? She was slumped against a tree and her voice said something like “hit me at 30 and there’s an 80% chance I’ll live, hit me at 40 and there’s an 80% chance I’ll die”

When that advert came out, I was a child myself, probably the same age as the child in the advert. Didn’t learn to drive until I was 25 and even now I can picture it as clear as day, especially when I’m driving in a 30 zone.

I guess whoever created that advert did a very good job as that’s stuck with me for the best part of 30 years.

Cross post! Great advert though - and I get it saved lives as that’s 3 of us in a red minutes who have remembered it, so I bet it was really impactful.

Yes! I can hear her voice saying it now, although I can’t picture it if that makes sense?

They definitely knew how to make road safety ads stick with you!

And one for Schweppes tonic water, where a posh languid leopard gets splashed by someone waterskiing, and sends his crocodile bodyguard to sort them out.

BillieWiper · 04/04/2026 12:39

I was just about to say this one.

It came out a couple of months after I witnessed my friend being hit by a car, we were 11 at the time, unfortunately she died at the scene. It brought it all back every single time that advert came on.

x2boys · 04/04/2026 12:46

Ooh and the Del monte advert
The juice man from Del monte he says yes!

Needspaceforlego · 04/04/2026 12:47

80s definitely had the best ads.

Trio - I want a Trio and I want one now
Busby - Good to talk- BT

Halifax building society lots of good ads with people

Dulux - they had a dog back on an ad the other day.

All the public safety ones
Flying kites near power lines
Substation
Overhead lines on trains

PGBlush · 04/04/2026 12:49

The VW Golf one with Paula Hamilton and the Hamlet one in the photo booth still makes me laugh

SixSevenShutUp · 04/04/2026 12:49

There was a sad one, where a Mum is too busy sewing to let her little girl in and she gets run over. Not sure what it was for but it made me suspicious of the sewing machine for a while.

BlakeCarrington · 04/04/2026 12:54

The milk one with the little Liverpudlian lads drinking milk to avoid playing for Accrington Stanley

Red car blue car

Fly fishing by JR Hartley

It's Bran Flakes ('But ask about the Bran Flakes that's a different matter - "they're very tasty"' etc).

Oh, and 'There's juice loose about this hoose' - fruit gums I think.

The coffee ads were Anthony Stewart Head weren’t they? Giles from Buffy. I remember them, loved the format - great idea to have you wanting the next instalment.

remembered Cadbury’s Milk Tray too - “All because the lady loves Milk Tray”
