Anyone else staying up to watch tonight's Moon mission launch?

Anyone else staying up to watch the launch to navigate the moon? I didn’t realise until this evening it’s the first launch in 5 decades!

The comms blackout was a bit tense, and the wait for the parachutes. But it looks like everything worked remarkably well. Phew!

Middlemarch123 · 11/04/2026 01:36

Waiting for Tom Cruise to sweep in on a jet ski to sort it all out.😂

I can’t go to bed until someone opens the capsule

Me neither!

Ireolu · 11/04/2026 01:37

I woke up with it on the news and now all teary and grateful that they have returned safely. Blessings.

NedsAtomicWheelieBin · 11/04/2026 01:37

So amazing to watch, I'm wide awake and have an early start tomorrow! Well done team 👏👏

RafaistheKingofClay · 11/04/2026 01:38

Artemis IIb is just going to be us watching them bob about in the Pacific for another 9 days.

Mumandcarer80 · 11/04/2026 01:42

A friend of mine said she couldn’t watch it because of the ammonia of fuel used to send it up. 75,000 gallons gone just like that. Enough fuel to run a car for 150 years.

ShowDownTime · 11/04/2026 01:44

Tell your friend about speculate to accumulate. They’re trying to find fuel sources on the moon. (I think)

sasamummy · 11/04/2026 01:47

Come on! I want to see astronauts!!! Are they giving it a power wash or scanning for aliens that hitched a lift....

FrankieMcGrath · 11/04/2026 01:48

Aagghhhh - I’m too tired, so will have to go to bed! Had really wanted to see them exit the capsule! Will just have to see it tomorrow!

SpidersAreShitheads · 11/04/2026 01:49

I just said to DP that I think just bobbing around in the ocean for so long would be worse than being in space!

For such a high tech achievement, the process of recovery seems to be quite basic…

They do realise they don’t use the same fuel as cars don’t they?

Artemis uses LOX (liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen). Cars do not.

It must be hard for the astronauts to have to hurry up and wait now that they’re down. Between the heat from reentry and the potential gases that need to dissipate they’re obviously going to play it safe.

I had the same thoughts about them bobbing around on the water 🥴☺️!

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 11/04/2026 01:53

That looked hopeful for a minute

AlcoholicAntibiotic · 11/04/2026 01:53

I feel a bit sorry for the commentators desperately trying to pad out time

SpidersAreShitheads · 11/04/2026 01:54

Ooh looks like something is happening?

NASA's channel is a bit too cerebral for me, so I'm watching Garron Noone's live as he waits for splashdown with a bottle of beer.

I watched Garron too 😁. He’s fab (‘delicious!’).

I can’t go to bed until they’ve been recovered, and we’ve had a glimpse of them.

sasamummy · 11/04/2026 01:54

Just in case you didn't know, the astronauts are in excellent condition!!!!!😴

Cece92 · 11/04/2026 01:56

Oh here we go looks like they are coming out now

RafaistheKingofClay · 11/04/2026 01:57

The door is open.

SpidersAreShitheads · 11/04/2026 01:58

Eight people in that tiny capsule!! 😮

nevernotmaybe · 11/04/2026 01:59

I generally support science and discovery, because it does generate new technology and progress things. So I am not against the endeavour.

But it is strange it became so unique so quickly. We were sending people up to orbit semi regularly until very recently which is no less difficult of a launch, and was doing so in a "space age" reusable vehicle until not that long ago overall. Basically nobody was watching those launches or reentry.

It's not like they even did something new overall either. The whole "furthest away" thing was fairly inconsequential, it was no more difficult in reality just marketing even though true. And every single original moon mission had humans circumventing the entire moon including the other side multiple times.

There hadn't been a moon mission in my lifetime, and I'm middle aged. So forgive me for finding this exciting.

TheAutumnCrow · 11/04/2026 02:02

I suppose it's because this one is the practice run for going back to the moon?

I know what you mean, though.
