Anyone else staying up to watch tonight's Moon mission launch?

Anyone else staying up to watch the launch to navigate the moon? I didn’t realise until this evening it’s the first launch in 5 decades!

I am watching. I saw a thread on here yesterday about the mission being a huge waste of money. Do you think there are long term plans to use the moon (as well as planets) as a dumping ground for our rubbish? Or as a source or fuel, or somewhere to put millions of solar panels that someone generate energy for earth?! That's where my mind goes. I have a horrible feeling humanity will destroy the moon eventually, as we have our own planet.
But it's very exciting!

Nope. It's going to be turned into a big bill-board advertising Coca-Cola.

What are they actually doing going to the moon?

Fly around the back of it see what China has done

TyneTeas · 01/04/2026 23:26

Oooooooooooooooooooo

Onebattleafteramother · 01/04/2026 23:27

👋 count down!

Wholetthatgoatin · 01/04/2026 23:27

As much as I despise Trump’s America and the shitshow they’re creating everywhere. I remember watching the first one when I was very little!

Andylion · 01/04/2026 23:27

I’m watching it, but I’m in the same time zone.

TyneTeas · 01/04/2026 23:27

Commencing Countdown

Even if we put solar panels up there how would we get the energy to here...

Rinoachicken · 01/04/2026 23:27

I think the ISS is nearing the end of its life - I think the plan is to establish a new base on the moon to replace it and act as a staging for further exploration in the future.

Yep.
I stayed up to watch the first moon landing, hope this flight goes safely.

It was the year I was born!

nocoolnamesleft · 01/04/2026 23:28

Can’t bear to go to bed at the minute. All fingers crossed.

Andylion · 01/04/2026 23:28

The King sent a letter to the Canadian astronaut who is going on the mission, Jeremy Hansen.

What are they actually doing going to the moon?

This is a test mission, first time humans have been in an Artemis rocket. So practising manoeuvres and all the separation stages.

They are “just” going to circle the Earth a few times, go to the moon, circle that and fly back.

Nuffpills · 01/04/2026 23:29

I worked a 12 hour shift today and am sooo tired but am powering on with a glass of wine and hoping it happens very soon and it all goes well! Cannot imagine how the astronauts are feeling and their families…everything crossed 🤞🙏

Also watching, very exciting (and a little tense!)

I agree. We’ve trashed the Earth and can’t all cooperate to save it. Well doubtless trash the moon and Mars too.

Lovelanza · 01/04/2026 23:29

I’m here too. Hope everything goes to plan. I remember the one that didn’t many years ago

What are they actually doing going to the moon?

One idea is that a base there it will serve as a stepping stone to Mars.

Nope. It's going to be turned into a big bill-board advertising Coca-Cola.

We need the moon just as an aside. Tides, gravitational pull etc. no moon = big problems. It's also our back up cheese supply

Riverpaddling · 01/04/2026 23:30

I'm up but not watching. I can't get excited about this after watching actual moon landings in the past. Nothing will ever match that.

Even if we put solar panels up there how would we get the energy to here...

Space based solar power - beam it back to Earth as electromagnet waves.
They (NASA & others) understand it and research it. Sounds wild now but so did smartphones a hundred years ago!

ILoveDaffodills · 01/04/2026 23:30

Just put it on the iPad. My stomach is in knots already. I'm not cut out for this 🤣🤣

if it all goes to plan, when will they get back?

JellyBeanSpring25 · 01/04/2026 23:30

So excited for this. T-5 mins now. Godspeed Artemis II

That would be amazing
