Do you change clothes when you come inside?

When I get in from work, the first thing I do is change into my house clothes (joggers and a cosy cardigan, take off my bra). I feel a bit like an old lady but I dress smart at work and when I get in, I'm cooking and taking care of young children. I hate to get spagbol and children's grime on my work cardis/trousers/etc. Am I alone in this?

Asking because after we have the children in bed, I usually lay on the sofa with DH and watch a bit of telly, and promptly fall asleep. I wonder if being in my pyjamas has anyting to do with my attire. (Probably I'm just knackered and I'd fall sleep in jeans, too...) I reckon I could put on a pair of jeans and a less-smart jumper when I come in but honestly I can't be arsed to change twice!

Yes, I get changed into my House Clothes as soon as I come in. I have a cat who sheds 1kg of fur every day, so my Outside Clothes are never worn in the house to try to minimise the amount of fur on them.

Plus I wear business clothes for work (skirts, silk blouses, tights etc) and they aren't comfortable for lounging in.

TheChosenTwo · 01/04/2026 20:32

Not unless I’m wet or something. And then there are nights I’m going out after work (either to exercise or socialise) and I might change from what I’ve worn to work to other going out clothes.
But I don’t own pyjamas so none of that for me. I do own a couple of pairs of jogging bottoms that I put on for messy house stuff like sweeping the garden or general cleaning but I’m quite a ‘busy’ person and hate the idea of wasting time so tend to shoehorn stuff in to evenings once I’ve finished work depending on what everyone else at home is doing, I don’t usually spend many evenings at home lying on the sofa tbh.

theresbeautyinwindysun · 01/04/2026 20:35

Oh I always take off work clothes! I can’t wait to! Then I’m home! I love touching base with my house even just for 5 minutes in a busy work day if I can pop home for lunch. I instantly feel comforted.

sleeppleasesoon · 01/04/2026 20:38

Yes. Whatever I’m wearing out the house is never as comfortable as joggers, a jumper and no bra. Getting changed is the first thing I do when I get home.

Yes, I always change into leggings and a baggy t shirt. I can't relax in 'smart' clothes, and I think jeans are uncomfortable for lounging around in.

This is why I hate surprise visitors 😆

This^ is me as well

Wildgoat · 01/04/2026 20:50

If I’m out for work, yes I change immediately, but I always change into something nice but more comfy, like soft wide leg jeans/trousers, a nice top, but generally looser and more comfy, a soft bralet etc, I stay like this till after dinner and by 7 or 8 I’m make up off, face cream on, short pjs and long dressing gown on, and that’s me for the evening. But I’m always in nice day clothes till dinner is done and eveything is cleared up.

No, I stay dressed in whatever I've been wearing. I don't get changed until I go to bed. It seems like a relatively recent thing, this desire to be in 'comfy, cosy' things the minute you get in. I don't find my normal clothes uncomfortable tbh!

It’s not a ‘recent thing’ at all Confused I’ve always put my pyjamas on as soon as I come in for the evening. My DC does also. My 81yr old DM does as well!

MiddleAgedDread · 01/04/2026 21:13

Yes pretty much always, particularly out of jeans and work clothes

KitTea3 · 01/04/2026 21:13

Yup

Into PJ's

On a good day after showering 😁
(On a bad...ie many days just straight away 😬😫)

I don't see the point in me (sitting in my bedroom I won't leave till I get up for work tomorrow ) staying in normal uncomfortable outside clothes 🤷🏻‍♀️

In fairness even as a kid we used to come home and get changed out of school uniform into more "home clothes"

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 01/04/2026 21:19

Yes, I wear a uniform for work, and like to shower off the day and get into lounge wear or pyjamas as soon as I get home.

StampOnTheGround · 01/04/2026 21:19

Yes, always get into my comfy clothes as soon as I’m in for the day!

I think it depends on definition of recent. I’m in my 50s and I don’t recall my parents or grandparents changing, so maybe by recent the poster means, well, decades ago!

OhFeyreDarling · 01/04/2026 21:27

Yep every day, I wear mostly skinny jeans during the day and they're just not comfortable for me to lounge on the sofa in. Plus my joggers are warmer and I have a comfy jumper I don't mind getting splattered if I'm cooking.
I never used to do the bra off thing until recently either, now I can't relax properly if I leave it on

Though my joggers aren't scruffy things/pyjamas and I'd happily throw my trainers on with them and go to the shop or a walk in them

henlake7 · 01/04/2026 21:29

I change out of my work uniform but not my other clothes as they are usually pretty comfy anyways.
I always pop my slippers on when I get in though!

Runningismyhappyplace50 · 01/04/2026 21:31

I used to change out of uniform when I got home from school, now, if I’ve been in the office I change into more comfortable clothes, I don’t wear jeans if I’m staying at home.

usedtobeaylis · 01/04/2026 21:34

No, clothes are clothes and I don't really wear clothes on a daily basis that I find uncomfortable and would need to change out of.

Pebbles16 · 01/04/2026 21:34

Absolutely change within about 30 seconds of being at home (DH cannot quite fathom how I get redressed so quickly). Being large of boob getting the over the shoulder scaffolding off is an absolute priority.
I put on super warm and comfy clothes for the evening and then it's into my nightie for bed.
My mum in the 70s had an "evening" dress which was like a big cocoon/moomoo type thing, often tie dyed or on a William Morrish print! She was a size tiny so it just floated around her!

aWeeCornishPastie · 01/04/2026 21:35

I always do yes

Lastrollo · 01/04/2026 21:36

Yep, bra off and into comfy joggers/loungewear.

Or sometimes it’s shower first then I get into my pyjamas. That tends to be more in cooler weather.

Also I’m not keen on having outside clothes on the sofa, don’t mind if it’s guests or whatever but I prefer not to especially as I take public transport/ubers.

Agree. Apart from the big fluffsome hoody which I'd swap for a coat, I could go to shops, neighbours etc. I suppose you'd call it "acceptable super casual"

Is the bra coming off not the best part of the day??! 😂😂🤣

Yes 😂 it’s such a relief.

FabulousWealthyTart · 01/04/2026 21:45

No, but then I wear casual clothes to work and only wear them during my lunch break. I think if I had to be more formal, probably would get changed at the end of the day though.

Buckfastburps · 01/04/2026 21:49

Yes I do. I find that if I can keep my work clothes clean from food smells, spills and children's fingers/noses (still getting in bed with DC at bedtime), along with bath time etc, I don't have to wash them as often and can re wear them the next day or hang them up to wear later in the week. Plus I get to be extra comfy at home! Bonus.

Iwantsandybeachesandgoodfood · 01/04/2026 21:54

I was always made to take my school uniform off as soon as I got home. As an adult I’ve always worked in schools (AKA germ pits) so I take my work clothes off as soon as I get in. If I’m not working then I don’t bother.
