Do you change clothes when you come inside?

When I get in from work, the first thing I do is change into my house clothes (joggers and a cosy cardigan, take off my bra). I feel a bit like an old lady but I dress smart at work and when I get in, I'm cooking and taking care of young children. I hate to get spagbol and children's grime on my work cardis/trousers/etc. Am I alone in this?

Asking because after we have the children in bed, I usually lay on the sofa with DH and watch a bit of telly, and promptly fall asleep. I wonder if being in my pyjamas has anyting to do with my attire. (Probably I'm just knackered and I'd fall sleep in jeans, too...) I reckon I could put on a pair of jeans and a less-smart jumper when I come in but honestly I can't be arsed to change twice!

During the winter months my hubby has come home from work and changed into his robe. I don’t mind, he always asks me if it’s ok, nothing spoiling, just us two at home now, vegging out with the doggies 🤗

Yes, I slip into my lounge wear

I know this is going to sound twatty, but I can't stand the vocabulary used to describe this concept either: 'comfies', 'joggers', 'cosy', 'buttery' leggings, 'snuggle'. Yeuch. It's all a bit infantilising imo.

You're right!

it does sound twatty.

Yes, I always whip off my bra, peel off my work duds, and change into sweatpants/ t-shirt/ comfy cardigan/ sweatshirt.

I get a few chores done every evening to avoid having to do a whole home cleanup on Saturday, so sweats fit the bill. After eating and finishing up the daily chore, I go for a walk and then settle down on the couch.

Envying the lucky women who have bras so comfortable they can't feel them. What's that like?

Oh I always take off work clothes! I can’t wait to! Then I’m home! I love touching base with my house even just for 5 minutes in a busy work day if I can pop home for lunch. I instantly feel comforted.

YYY to this!
It's exactly how I feel.

Cominghomesoon · 02/04/2026 03:40

Am retired now but when working, changed into joggers and tee shirt during the summer but during winter months it was PJs...

Marchitectmummy · 02/04/2026 03:46

Yep, we all do.i have a shower and get changed into some sort of lounge wear and my husband will do the same. In the meantime our girls will either get changed into sports gear if they have training etc or if it's a night when they are in for the night will also shower and into lounge wear.

My work clothes are for work, not for cooking or sitting on a sofa. My parents raised me this way. I can not understand why anyone would not get changed into indoor clothes.

Flatandhappy · 02/04/2026 04:29

When I had boobs the first thing I did when I got home was to take off my bra 😂 Not an issue now but I’m taking the win.

IwanttoWFH · 02/04/2026 04:34

As long as I’m not going out again, I always get changed into my pyjamas or “loungewear” as soon as I get home. I like to be comfy and can think of nothing worse than sitting around all day/evening in work clothes or jeans! I wear smart, tailored clothes to work so they aren’t comfy to be sitting around at home in! I also like to get showered as soon as I get home from work before I put my PJs on

moleeye · 02/04/2026 04:40

Yes

straight upstairs, change clothes (bra off!), take off all my makeup and do a mini facial.

Back down do dinner, see to the kids etc

mondaytosunday · 02/04/2026 04:53

No. But I would if I wore a suit or similar. My office attire was fairly relaxed so I didn’t change. My DH wore a suit and tie and he did change.

Stnam · 02/04/2026 05:00

I don't get the issue with bras. I don't find them uncomfortable at all. Are they too tight or itchy? What is it?

HollyGolightly4 · 02/04/2026 05:15

Yes, I change into lounge wear. I don't want my work clothes to attract cooking smells or splashes, or just to get messy for that matter. I've done this since primary school. I'm also team bra off- why would I need to keep one on in the house?!

Focusispower · 02/04/2026 05:22

Indoor clothes was not a thing we did when I was growing up. It was only when I met my husband (mid 20s) that he introduced me to the concept, and I didn’t really embrace it until mid 30s because I didn’t spend much time in just sitting around the house!

If I’m in smart work attire, I immediately get changed now. I have more indoor/relaxed clothes that I wear all day (in and out the house) because I work from home a lot. The school run and local shops aren’t worth getting dressed up beyond casual clothes.

I don’t embrace it as much as my husband who has ancient pair of joggers he puts on indoors. I’m usually in one outfit until I change into my PJs at 7pm at the start of DC bedtime routine. Ditching my underwear is my favourite part of the day!

Simonjt · 02/04/2026 05:26

Yes, I just put shorts on when I get home. Food etc doesn’t worry me with work clothes as I wear clean clothes, so any mess would be washed off before they are worn again.

SouthernNights59 · 02/04/2026 06:04

I used to change into something more comfortable when I got home from work, otherwise I would have been bound to spill stuff on my work clothes. Not pyjamas though.

RedRiverShore6 · 02/04/2026 06:13

Generally yes, I wouldn't want to get food or cleaning materials on my going out clothes and ruin them. In the old days my mum used to wear a pinny all day, I think this was quite a usual thing to do

Scottsquare · 02/04/2026 06:18

Yes, I change out if my work uniform and into joggers and a jumper. I tend to find cooking smells transfer so I’d rather they didn’t transfer onto my work clothes for the next day.

FlatErica · 02/04/2026 06:29

Yes always. I like to change from external world me to at home me. My work clothes are also more constricting than my lounging around at home clothes, even though I usually just wear jeans trainers, a T-shirt and a little jacket to work.

Even if I was just wearing casual clothes to go to the local shops, I would change again when I got in.

Conversely I never wear my home clothes outside because they’re just too sloppy. At the moment I am wearing an old holey shirt with dried parrot shit on the arm, no bra and a pair of hippie combat trousers that are super comfortable but super ugly.

TBH it's something I don't think about. Until I joined mumsnet I didn't know that women whipped their bra off when they got home.

I don't have big boobs, so maybe that is why?

chateauneufdupapa · 02/04/2026 06:55

I basically get in my PJs any time from 5pm

Callmebubblesdarlingeverybodydoes · 02/04/2026 07:03

I wear normal every clothes to work such as leggings and a Tshirt. As soon as I get home I shower and change into clean normal clothing, normally shorts and again a T-shirt.

I can’t imagine sitting on my sofa in my work clothes, I’d need to burn my sofa if I did.

All depends what industry you work in.

Auburngal · 02/04/2026 07:05

My work is hybrid - 2 days per week in the office. I have work trousers which only wear for work. I take these off when get home and put on joggers. A few tops I wear I take off as too nice. I swap my cardigan or hoodie for an indoors.

My job in the civil service we can wear stuff like jeans, hoodies, t-shirts providing they aren’t ripped, have offensive, political wording. Or sports teams’ shirts.

The office isn’t customer facing so the relaxed clothing policy has helped me not buying as many smartish clothes. As when you wore a uniform for work for 17 years, you don’t buy as many smart clothes

CheddarCheeseAndCrispSandwich · 02/04/2026 07:12

I just take my bra off…the relief!! 😂 Genuinely can’t be bothered changing though…and I still fall asleep on the sofa 🤷‍♀️
