I would have thought there are loads of people working on telly and in radio that have some degree of criminal record?

Cant think of any, but surely there would be, like any organisation

Someone referred above to a DBS check! Do radio presenters have a DBS check? Its for particular roles if you need an enhanced one

I can't see how the role would qualify for a DBS check. You can only do them if a job meets certain criteria, usually involving working unsupervised with children or vulnerable adults.

YourMagentaCat · 31/03/2026 09:15

Why are we having this stupid discussion about Miriam as a radio breakfast host?

Well I actually think its interesting as a suggestion because she is wholly inappropriate and this is a good example of how easy it would be for someone to be sacked for misconduct for things that arent criminal offences. She owuld be one of them, she would say something offensive at god knows every level

Yes theres an enhanced check which as you say the job needs a certain criteria but then there is a standard DBS. But the standard DBS doesnt have all the information on it.

Just done the school run listening to Gary Davies and I have to say I’m pleasantly surprised. Leave him in the seat, a whole kylie monster mix at 8.30am .. that’s one hell of a way to gloss over this shower of a shit show 😆

TheUsualChaos · 31/03/2026 09:26

Agree Gary Davis is the calm we need in the mornings. No shouting or idiotic quizzes, just some good music and a nice presenter.

Myblueclematis · 31/03/2026 09:27

Even though I dislike the deja woooooooooo thing Gary does, I would probably switch the radio on earlier than 9.30 if he took over the breakfast slot.

Oh god I had to switch off. 10 fucking minutes of Kylie Minogue?! Clearly they were holding a quick PR briefing making sure nobody says anything inappropriate but they could have played some decent music whilst they were doing it!

They should do a DBS check on new presenters!

I’m not sorry to see SM go: I was annoyed he took over from Steve Wright, but then totally perplexed when he was given the biggest show in British radio. He is a total charisma vacuum, and has utterly shit taste in music, if you can call his manufactured bubblegum pop that.

A PP said that they should do away with presenters and just play music as that’s what everyone wants, but I disagree: people also like a bit of company and gentle entertainment sometimes.

DBS checks can only be done if someone has unsupervised access to children or vulnerable adults. So not applicable to presenters. Also, they only show convictions. The latter requirement would not have prevented Saville, Huw Edwards, Philip Schofield etc.

RedToothBrush · 31/03/2026 09:32

I am aware that at least some flag ship BBC programmes changed their policy to interns and work experience to be over 18s only fairly recently.

Its looking increasingly like there may be a reason for this.

HoraceCope · 31/03/2026 09:34

on the bbc home page there is a link to scott mills world book day, bizarre and somebody has come dressed as wardrobe when she says she cant fit through the door, she could WALK IN SIDEWAYS
and they are linking the programme today!

Nanny0gg · 31/03/2026 09:34

billysboy · 30/03/2026 20:05

The bbc will have Ritchie Anderson in there before long

Does he know where the bodies are buried or something?

LadyLucksalot · 31/03/2026 09:35

The problem with that slot is that nobody will ever come close to Terry Wogan. A thoroughly decent, witty, funny man who understood what a privilege it is to be invited into people's mornings.

It's been a stream of one crass loudmouth after the other, with the exception of Gary Davies who is a proper DJ.

Time to give the job to someone who will actually appreciate it and bring something to the table in terms of wit, knowledge and affability. Qualities which Trevor Nelson has in spades, but I doubt he'd want the poisoned chalice.

HoraceCope · 31/03/2026 09:35

i never liked terry wogan

Romeiswheretheheartis · 31/03/2026 09:38

I'd like Vernon in the breakfast slot, with Gary in the 9.30 slot (and no Ellie or Tina D in any slot - i would be very happy never to hear any 'amusing anecdotes' about Tina's child again - can she not just stick to reading the news).

Agree re TW, he was the best - but I remember listening to an interview with him (think it was Desert Island Discs) where he said he wasn't a popular choice with many when he took over the Breakfast Show, as he was seen as too 'out there' and not suitable!

madeofmore · 31/03/2026 02:08

Yes quite sure. Is there anything in particular that makes you lean towards him being a horse?
Maybe I have missed something horse-like about him but a quick google reveals that Tony has expressed a strong admiration for Exmoor ponies, so that's interesting.

😂

I was just about to say at least we don't have to hear about Scott Mills wonderful husband anymore. But yep there is still Tina Daheley bringing us all the wisdom of her 2 year old genius child and Vernon Kaye reminding us how his dad drove HGVs😴

This latest sacking was for messing with an under age teenager apparently.

Oh what a surprise🙄

truepenguin · 31/03/2026 09:50

Tony Blackburn is a consummate DJ and really knows his music, but I do remember (I am that old) in the 1970s when he was going through an acrimonious divorce and absolutely aired all his grievances on his show (must have been R1) at the time.

My childhood ears were like 😱and omg! (or whatever the 70s equivalent slang was - probably 'far out') listening to this very grown-up, and wholly inappropriate, saga being played out on national radio. I remember feeling very sorry for Tessa. And yet, cancelled he was not.

AndresyFiorella · 31/03/2026 09:50

I didn't either.

Ive only listened to Tina Daheley when shes standing in for Jeremy Vine (which imo is a huge improvement!) And literally never heard her talk about her child! Maybe she only does it in the morning?
But yeah Vernon literally shoehorns a reference to truckers/lorry drivers in at every opportunity!

But the DJs make the difference between radio and streaming services. My teen dc dont listen to the radio, unless on a short car journey because I have the radio in the car, but mostly they just have Spotify. I like some chat between music, I really liked popmaster, and I enjoy Sara Cox interactions with listeners.

Very happy as I can't stand him

I'm starting to wonder whether, when you go for an interview at the BBC, one of the questions they aak is ' have you abused anyone at all in the last 30 years and if you say ' oh, yes, definitely', they say ' oh good, you've got the job'.
