Funny names for random things in your house

Do you have any funny names for random things in your house that have just stuck?

Today I shouted from upstairs asking DH to put the washing out. I said to him that "the spin-a-poo-poo is upstairs" as if this is the most normal sentence in the world! It's only when I thought about it that I laughed. If anyone outside of this house heard me they'd think I'd lost my marbles. Our children (now 14, 16 and 19) called the laundry basket the spin-a-poo-poo when they were little and it shall now forever be known as that 😂

Are we just a little weird alone?!

Ours was called Noo-noo after the one on Teletubbies.

Our robotic hoover is called Hector.

Ours is called Peregrine. No idea why, the kids picked it.

Also when we're not talking to Alexa we call her 'she who must not be named'.

Tampons were mice on the shopping list after a particular Young Ones episode

Lurpak is Mongoose Butter. To differentiate it from the Butter Butter.

PrimalScreaming · 21/03/2026 19:45

We call Home Bargains, Home Bargano to give it a tongue in cheek upmarket ring!

And we have cold frames for growing salad which are known as the 'slow worms'. My partner couldn't think what they were called just after we had them and in the heat of conversation I think it was just something with the same number of syllables - but it stuck!

Hot chocolate is called power fluff (no idea)

Hoover is called Rob as I was hoping he’d be as fussy over dust as a colleague with the same name

afaloren · 21/03/2026 19:58

We call the dishwasher the dishie

The potato ricer (ugh, how middle class) is called The Life Changer because well, it does.

What's a potato ricer...?

waits for life to be on the cusp of changing

whatwasthatnoise · 21/03/2026 20:10

From when my kids were wee, but still use these now:
Nail clippers are the snip snips.
Poppadoms are poppy crackers.

wizzbitt · 21/03/2026 20:11

My now 11 year old used to call water “schlava” when he was 1. So naturally we all adopted it. Sadly we don’t call it that anymore. It’s a great word 😂

Meadowflower2023 · 21/03/2026 20:29

Remote control is the doofrey here. Similar to doofer like a lot of PP but not sure why we ended up with a variation.

Moll2020 · 21/03/2026 20:29

Our remote is called the doobery wotsit!

Shhush · 21/03/2026 20:36

We have a room we call 'the void', its basically a hallway off a hallway. It feels too big to be a hallway, but not big enough to be useful.

AngelicaArchangel · 21/03/2026 20:37

Nail clippers = pingers
Baby powder/talcum = foofoo
Armpits = oxters
Putting your arms above your head = ar shumps

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 21/03/2026 20:41

In my childhood home the tv remote was always called the box and i thought everyone called it that. I was in uni before I heard the word doofer and hadn't clue what it was.
Kitchen roll is called rag.
Sleeping bags are called toady sacks.
Thingummy is a common word for anything in our house.

Edited

When I was about nine, one of my friends asked me where the box was. She meant the remote control. I had no idea what she as talking about until she explained, but you're not the only one to call it that.
