Funny names for random things in your house

Do you have any funny names for random things in your house that have just stuck?

Today I shouted from upstairs asking DH to put the washing out. I said to him that "the spin-a-poo-poo is upstairs" as if this is the most normal sentence in the world! It's only when I thought about it that I laughed. If anyone outside of this house heard me they'd think I'd lost my marbles. Our children (now 14, 16 and 19) called the laundry basket the spin-a-poo-poo when they were little and it shall now forever be known as that 😂

Are we just a little weird alone?!

My teeny-at-the-time daughter when sorting washing with me, called my bra, “mummy’s boob sock”. That has stuck!

Nice croissants (the type you buy individually, rather than the ones that come in a bag of 8) are called “toilet croissants” in our house. It started when DD was 3 and desperately needed the toilet while we were out. The only place we could find was a cafe, where they insisted she could only go if we bought something, and the cheapest thing on the menu was a croissant. It cost us about £5, but it was a really good croissant, and is now the standard by which all other croissants are judged.

Our garden shredder is called Edvard - as in Munch... because he hungrily munches up all the branches you feed to him!

It’s the doofer in my house, the beeper in Mil and the buttons in my mothers

The dodah or thingy in my house 😆

garlictwist · 22/03/2026 04:45

We call the box room “the animal room” because when we bought the house it had lots of wall friezes of zoo animals on it that the previous owners had put up for their kid. We took them off but the name remains.

MJEBinAthens · 22/03/2026 04:45

We call the garage door control keyring a “blibliki” because that’s the noise it makes.

When my 4 kids were little we used to collectively call them “the kidlets” as in “Are the kidlets ready to go?”

When referring to Pink Floyd we call them “Pink F@cking Floyd” because years ago someone we knew said in a very irritated tone “Not Pink F@cking Floyd, AGAIN!”

When having family meals, we say to each other in a baby voice “Want some meat? Want some chicken!” as that’s what my daughter used to say as a toddler. Thing is, we use it every time, even when it’s not chicken!!!!!

I’ve never heard anyone else called them dibber and puffer before, thought I was just us!!

Asthma inhaler? They’re pretty much only known as puffers in Australia. Have been for decades.

The hoover is the vacuum scraper. The floors sometimes required that level of attention.
Sun cream is sunscream - one DC had a canary every time I tried applying it.

Our remote control is “the zapper”.

My mother called hers, "the flat controller".

My mobility scooter is called 'Ned' and my wheelchair is, "Rolley Joe"

The microwave is 'Mike' and I often tell Alexa 'Mike on'.

StormyLandCloud · 22/03/2026 05:53

Our utility room is called the lolly house because when our son was a toddler he saw our cat sitting on the roof of utility room and said ‘look mum, kitty is on the lolly house’ … because that’s where we had the spare freezer which had the kids lollies

Thrushcrossgrange · 22/03/2026 06:36

Strawberries = dorbries or streebries as that's how both my toddler DDs pronounced them.

Growing up the remote was called a clicker.

Mum always calls Christmas turkey Joe.

Also random but when reading handas surprise with my 2 year old she called an ostrich a fruit goose and now ostriches are fruit gooses to me forever more.

When we moved into our house 24 years ago, the old owner rented out a downstairs room, it was full of his stuff ( didn't live in it, just for storage). When he moved his stuff out, after a year or so, we realised how big it was, much bigger on the inside, than it looked on the outside. This sitting room has always been known as "The Tardis".
"Where are my trainers?..."
"They're in the Tardis"...

marriednotdead · 22/03/2026 06:49

The microwave is the ding. The footstool is mum’s secret stash- adult DS didn’t know it had a storage area underneath and we had treats and snacks stored in it for months. He was both delighted and outraged when we finally told him.

marriednotdead · 22/03/2026 06:52

Anything gluten free (my dietary restrictions) is known as fun free. Dsis is very impressed with my fun free sausage rolls.

Sgtmajormummy · 22/03/2026 07:12

The little pump for removing baby snot was the “nose Noo-Noo”. And our paediatrician who gave us a free sample is still Doctor Nose Noo-Noo (now a friend).
Different sizes of bag clips are Daddy, Mummy and Baby Nipper with accompanying squeak, squawk or grunt.
We don’t have an Alexa but the satnav is known as The Sybil.

In my childhood home the tv remote was always called the box and i thought everyone called it that. I was in uni before I heard the word doofer and hadn't clue what it was.
Kitchen roll is called rag.
Sleeping bags are called toady sacks.
Thingummy is a common word for anything in our house.

Edited

Always the box here too!!

Limer · 22/03/2026 07:19

our tv remote is called My Preciousssss, derivation from Lord of the Rings, because everyone wants it and nobody knows where it is.

Thisbastardcomputer · 22/03/2026 07:28

My son called his slippers, piers, when he was a toddler. Slippers are always called Piers now, 40 odd years later.

mellongoose · 22/03/2026 07:33

Our robot hoover is named Barbara. She was named on arrival by 8yo DC and nobody questioned it.

wyntersky · 22/03/2026 07:37

Our study/my craft room is called the Tardis, when we moved in I was telling my in-laws about some antique furniture that I had inherited from my Dad and Mum had been keeping until we bought a house. My in-laws do not appreciate antiques and kept going on and on about how 'it won't go with the house', 'you won't have room for it', 'you don't want that'. I got so pissed off with that and the he 'where will it go?' questions I snapped 'Fine, it'll go in my craft room'. when they came back my Fil had used his boring tool to make a sign saying the Tardis and painted it pink, we hung it on the door and my dad's furniture is perfectly fine in our house

KnickerlessParsons · 22/03/2026 11:50

We have an “under the stairs”
cupboard which isn’t under the stairs.
it has the hoover, coats, bags, sleeping bags etc in it.
In our old house the cupboard where those things were stored was under the stairs, so the name has stuck.

In my house we have a remote each.

I have fun with my carer about what rooms are called. I'm in bungalow, the kitchen and small bedroom are at the front of the house. My carer still refers to my living room as,'the front room'.

My mum used to call the corkscrew a 'screwdriver'.

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 22/03/2026 15:10

We call dishwasher tablets ‘sweets’ after someone posted on here saying their husband ate a dishwasher tablet that was left on the table cos he thought it was a sweet.
