Why do people reject Islam?

SplodgeWaddler · 21/03/2026 09:33

Just curious really. A lovely colleague of mine used to be a Muslim but was quite vocal in telling us she was no longer a Muslim. It was a clear, decisive rejection of the religion and not just a lapse of faith.

Has anyone done similar, I'd love to know your reasons.

There were many Muslim girls at my school, some of whom had massively restricted prospects in life. One girl (who was a bit wild) told us she was worried that she was going to be forced into an arranged marriage. She just didn't come back one day, she was under 16.

Things do seem to have moved on since then though but there still seems to be huge variation.

Actually, while I started out quite chilled about Islam a few year ago, I have become very much less favourably disposed to it. I was very close to mostly Jewish people at university and while I think all religious belief is idiocy, I have come to the conclusion that I prefer modern Judaism with its preferences for democracy and liberalism to theocracy. I am almost at the point of declaring myself Jewish.

I’ve noticed that people often get less laissez faire about Islam, the more familiar they get with it.

Seeing women struggle in 30 degree heat whilst wearing dark coat like clothing whist their men folk wear bermudas and tee shirts , it doesn’t talk any amount of brains to conclude that there is a high level of control involved in Islam . It is a gross widespread cult that should have been stopped years ago . It is not a religion of peace , it does not come from God . ‘You will know it by its fruits’ , ‘ wolves in sheep’s clothing ‘ aid it all . Some very sweet people taken in by ‘fear’ of the Lord … my God is a loving God and my relationship gets deeper every day . 🕊️🕊️🙏

What about women who are orthodox Jews or any other strict religion?

But the thread is about Islam.

So you feel sorry for women in those clothes even though its what they want to wear.

SummerJasmine · 29/05/2026 09:22

Arranged marriages, viewed faces ,hatred of dogs .

OnBoardTheHeartOfGold · 29/05/2026 09:34

Unfortunately, a lot of vocal
islam has shifted to the right and seems to be about appearances and how loud and insistent you can be.
Meanwhile, most Muslims are quietly getting on with their lives being normal, enjoying music, art, films and travel, not threatening anyone and marrying whoever they want.

Yes in the heat and do you think they do or is it pressure to conform

And they will do nothing to quell down the rise of extremism within their religion because you cannot disavow or criticise another member of your community, a fellow believer or the religion itself.

So they watch it happen and do nothing.
Islam will not progressively reform or modernise itself.

They do speak up. Often. It’s just never newsworthy.

I have just been googling "moderate muslims against muslim extremism uk"

What is coming back from the MCB Muslim Council of Britain or the BBC dates from 2017 and 2014, and is about ppl leaving to join Isis.

If you have anything more recent or relevant, please, don't hesitate to share.

@Judgejudysno1fan
There may be 2 billion Muslims world wide but the cultural influences on the way they practise Islam is significant. Albania and Pakistan are both mainly Muslim Countries. The way they interpret Islamic teaching is very different. I would guess that you are a South Asian Muslim. Interestingly, the Westminster Uni Research programme focuses on South Adian Muslims as being most resistant to changing cultural practices. So much of what you proclaim is not Islamic ordained but South Asian culture

Just like many South Asians in Whitechapel London and other areas of England. In Whitechapel the muslim women walk 5 steps behind their husband and do not have the freedoms as other muslim women from other countries and cultures. SImilar to the Somali women in Whitechapel. Young adults cannot go about their business without an 'uncle' or aunt' having a say on how they are living their own life. They have to be seen to follow their communities rules.

It is easy to say 'Islam doesn't say that' and/or 'that is not islam' however many perform the cultural aspects that is really aligned with life in the UK.

Who in their right mind would wear this clothing in 30+ degree heat . They are. Clearly controlled and brainwashed into believing that modest clothing means covering up every inch .. what a load of bull . It is a religion of fear and so many kind sweet people are being controlled and abused . I’ve seen it with my in-laws .

In what way were they struggling?

Commonsensemom · 29/05/2026 18:17

Every country that has tolerated Islam , has become a mess . We already see this in the Uk , laughing stock of Europe . Someone said above that most Muslims are aligned with the right ; this is not true in my experience . Most muslims have put politics above religious morals especially recently and have very much aligned themselves with the greens and Labour in the UK … ie with people who want liberalisation of hard drugs , abortion , gender change and I could go on … they have no principles any more. It’s a joke …

In whitechapel the muslim women walk 5 steps behind their husbands? Really, what all of them? And somali women too? Wow. Ive never met a Somali woman like this actually. They are usually boss ladies. Must go back to Whitechapel to see this in action. Its true that I haven’t been in a couple of years.

This is how the puritans used to be after the Civil war and they banned theatre apart from mystery plays.

The reign of the Joyless Puritans didn’t last long in good old Merrie England though, did it?

Come on now. You know that Islam doesn’t permit this in Afghanistan or anywhere else.

Are you living in a cave … it has been reported on bbc , rte and other global TV stations . Women in Afghanistan have had their livelihoods taken away over might , families are and have resorted to selling their little girls to older men .. and smug imams in Uk continue to say nothing , zilch . Credibility has gone out the window … along with other things I mentioned . Where are the voices of decent Muslims … I can’t hear them …

I missed that the news channels were reporting that it is the fault of Islam that there are many problems in Afghanistan. Do send a link. Recently decades have blamed many issues on the Taliban of course, but that’s just a group of idiot men. If Reform take control of UK politics shall we start to blame our issues on Christianity? As for imams, I can only say that I know one well in person and he is horrified by what lots of men choose to do. Im not aware of any smug imams who promote the horrible things that happen in Afghanistan, again, do send links. Thanks.

@fouroclockrock
So the talibans have nothing to do with Islam? What is their ideology then?

The 70/72 Virgins comes from the Hadiths and other religious texts, you can google yourself, a bit of due diligence and learning will do you good.

And you can regularly see women walking behind the men in Tower Hamlets and similar areas, if you care to check, which I doubt you will.

Please dont try and be a smart arse. I didn’t even mention the hadith about the wives for SOME martyrs in Islam. Why should I dispute it? Ah I have scrolled back and see that someone thinks that old men in Afghanistan think they will all be getting a load of wives when they die. This is actually incorrect. Nowhere in the hadith or anywhere else does it say this. It’s reserved as a possibility for those who die in battle on the battlefield (assuming they are eligible for heaven).
As for the Taliban they are following extreme and distorted versions of Islam such as deobandi, those from south asia. Mainstream Islam doesn’t permit not consider them to be followers of the correct path. I imagine its a bit like the extreme Christians in other parts of the world that most Christians have little commonality with.
I am aware that there will be some women who walk behind men in places like Whitechapel, but it is untrue and unfair to say that all or even most Muslim women do this because they dont.
