Why do people reject Islam?

Just curious really. A lovely colleague of mine used to be a Muslim but was quite vocal in telling us she was no longer a Muslim. It was a clear, decisive rejection of the religion and not just a lapse of faith.

Has anyone done similar, I'd love to know your reasons.

There were many Muslim girls at my school, some of whom had massively restricted prospects in life. One girl (who was a bit wild) told us she was worried that she was going to be forced into an arranged marriage. She just didn't come back one day, she was under 16.

Things do seem to have moved on since then though but there still seems to be huge variation.

Please dont try and be a smart arse. I didn’t even mention the hadith about the wives for SOME martyrs in Islam. Why should I dispute it? Ah I have scrolled back and see that someone thinks that old men in Afghanistan think they will all be getting a load of wives when they die. This is actually incorrect. Nowhere in the hadith or anywhere else does it say this. It’s reserved as a possibility for those who die in battle on the battlefield (assuming they are eligible for heaven).
As for the Taliban they are following extreme and distorted versions of Islam such as deobandi, those from south asia. Mainstream Islam doesn’t permit not consider them to be followers of the correct path. I imagine its a bit like the extreme Christians in other parts of the world that most Christians have little commonality with.
I am aware that there will be some women who walk behind men in places like Whitechapel, but it is untrue and unfair to say that all or even most Muslim women do this because they dont.

Easier to deny or say “not me” than go tell them off, eh?

You prove my pp.

Well evil thrives when good men do nothing … Imams alliances should be freaking out en mass about this and pressurising global human rights to do something . These sales are happening and justified by your prophet , not ours … there is a very good reason mohammed didn’t make it into the bible ..

Extreme Christians … ? I’ve never known an extreme Christian to walk into a crowded area and blow everyone up …. Tell me where / when you ever heard of an extreme Christian … they don’t exist . They are practicing Christian’s who are traditional in practice but are overwhelmingly well behaved and don’t bother others … I’ve never come accross the Christian equivalent of extreme Islam … seem to be able to justify mass killings every day at the moment . Just up the road today in a peaceful part of Switzerland … so many , you no longer hear about most of them in national news … all driven by Mohammed quakery …
currently in Iran loads of marriages happen in g publicly where married couples are pledging their lives for the cause of Islam , enough said

Why not contact a load of imams and make your suggestions? Get the ball rolling and all that. I am not an expert on the bible at all but it was written long before Prophet Muhammad existed. The torah also doesn’t mention Jesus as far as I know but in both cases there are arguments they are alluded to from a Jewish and Muslim point of view. I know there was a King that was mentioned in the bible that was to come, and he did, but i think that was to prove a point about an important story.
Anyway, you clearly have a deep seated hatred of what you think Islam is and that’s up to you. I just want to correct misinformation, that’s all. I know that there are a lot of arsehole men who are Muslim (with varying levels of knowledge of Islam a d morals in general) but there are people like this everywhere from all religions and worldviews. There are also a lot of good people who are Muslim who do and wish no harm to anyone.

Well, off the top of my head you have some Christian militia groups in central Africa, there’s a group in India that do all they can to hurt Hindus. You have the Texas siege in the 90s started by Christian seventh day adventists (i think), the kkk were fairly extreme protestants, you have great swathes of colonisers forcing Christianity on many poorer parts of the world not so long ago. Im sure there are plenty more examples to be found.

Maybe it’s about time Islam got an overhaul . I’m signing off ; need to pray for enlightenment of Muslims worldwide and more Christian imams , good night .

Greenwitchart · 30/05/2026 09:04

Same reasons as to why people reject many other religions.

I was raised in the catholic faith and rejected it because of its attitude towards women and gay people, the hushing up of abuse scandals by priests and ultimately the fact that I do not believe there is some kind of almighty god in the sky...

Most religions are about control and nonsensical rules.

I think for Islam the added fact that some believers have turned to extremism is also a factor.

Rosepalmaviolets · 30/05/2026 09:14

@Greenwitchart same here really, also studying classics and the gods !
Learning how islam and Christianity hijacked existing local festivals like easter and so on

What I find interesting however is that my mum was Catholic dad strongly against religion . I was baptised and taken to church but not every week at all maybe once a month twice at most and my school wasn't particularly religious and I still feel programmed and brain washed by it ?? My siblings were not religious and wider family yes and no but lived far away and I have no idea what my neighbours religions were.ie no community or family coercion
I fall easily into the hail Mary , the our father ...Chanting out in church .

I have no idea how deep in mentally people are when they are told they are born muslim like a race ,are schooled early in it and have layer upon layer of control in the form of family and community !
