Apart from Dadda, Mumma, etc, my ds first word was "door." Well, " doooor" elongated, repeated many times as two or three syllables and intonation, like "dorwerwer."

DDs first word was duck. Before even a clear mumma or dadda. DS first word was his sister’s name.

merryhouse · 20/03/2026 22:27

"ta" 😍

both of them

Ohfudgeoff · 20/03/2026 22:28

I kept a language diary for both my kids 🥰 Found it fascinating to see their language development over time!

Baby 1
First word was 'bump' (12m), followed up, no hiya and bubble (13m).

Baby 2
First word was 'duddle!' (meaning cuddle), oh dear (with an extended final sound), ouch and yes (12m).
Followed by roar, book, brown, bear (13m).

Language explosion at 15m for baby 1, and even wilder language explosion at 14m + 15m for baby 2. I kept up my vocab diary until 21m with baby 1 and only until 17m with baby 2 because I no longer could keep up!

Baby 2 reached the same language level as baby 1 a lot soon and I do wonder if it's because they had an older sibling to learn from.

Really found it fascinating.

"Wasat?" as in "what's that".
My sister insists my niece's first word was "condensation".

PuppyMonkey · 20/03/2026 22:41

DD1 now nearly 30 - ca ca ca - looking at the cat.

DD2 now 18 - more - looking at mushed up sweet potato.

Iliketulips · 20/03/2026 22:44

Good girl, as regularly used to change her and said that.

BeardOToots · 20/03/2026 22:44

‘Superman’. Well, ‘Doo-pa-ma’. Nearly crashed the car with laughter.

RS1987 · 20/03/2026 22:45

DC1 - ello
DC2 - wow (closely followed by DC1’s name and beep (sheep)

That made me lol

Denim4ever · 20/03/2026 22:52

My DSs first word was also 'door' 😀 As in 'how am I meant to crawl round the entire house if you haven't opened the door of the room we are in?'

First phrase 'mewe' ie 'feed me', second one 'go out'.

poppinpink · 20/03/2026 23:00

DS- ‘let it go’. The height of frozen fever. Big sis DD had it on…. A lot!!!

Bloozie · 20/03/2026 23:02

It was two words at once. “More mease!” - more please! Greedy gander.

lifeisgoodrightnow · 20/03/2026 23:14

Gusdisting. She’d observed her twin brother babbling for months - absolute nonsense- then came out with her opinion on the world.

LambriniBobInIsleworthISeesYa · 20/03/2026 23:40

Both of mine said “cat” as their first proper word… as did I, apparently. I assume it’s because I was surrounded by cats and so were my children. Say what you see!

Catcentral · 20/03/2026 23:46

Hat

salcombebabe · 20/03/2026 23:51

My girl/boy twins first words were Sainsburys (or their version of it) and Doctor because we always seemed to be going to one or the other 🙄 not that they were sickly but checkups etc

Mistyglade · 20/03/2026 23:56

Car.

peppermintpig74 · 20/03/2026 23:57

DS1 was Milk. Used this to refer to not just breast milk but myself in general.

DD1 was older brothers name.

DD2 was Yuk when I offered any food that wasn’t marmite on toast. Also Donald Duck (or something that sounded like it), this was her favourite soft toy.

FetchezLaVache · 21/03/2026 00:06

DS's first word was Ankoo (thank you), followed closely by Me More for breast feeding (MN recommended calling it something you don't mind being bellowed out in the supermarket if you intend to carry on beyond infancy, best advice ever as it turned out!).
