Meningitis outbreak

I’m freaking out a bit

DD has been here all day after travelling from uni yesterday. Her housemate is really poorly and now I’ve just seen the news about the meningitis outbreak at her uni.

Her housemate is in the house on her own now - I’ve told DD to call the uni and let them know. Worried that DD has been here with us all day in case she gets sick

Boots says not until start of summer ( last week of June). My Boots appointment got cancelled.

How far in advance of the appointment did they cancel you?

Oh no!

😿.. more gutted for him… he’s ND and he had to apply and interview for a place as it was an oversubscribed volunteering work experience trip. He’s not particularly academic and it was a huge achievement for him. Hey ho.

I found this interesting on the research going on in the aftermath of the Kent outbreak. My two main takeaways:

  1. Analysis of the samples showed that although the outbreak strain had been circulating for 5 years, it had undergone “multiple potentially significant mutations” which might alter the bacterium’s behaviour. Research is ongoing as to the effect of these mutations.
  2. Studies are going to be conducted on blood samples from healthy 15-22 year olds to see if their immunity is impaired in any way from e.g. the impact of the pandemic and less in-person interaction.
Students wait in line at the entrance to the sports hall at University of Kent campus in Canterbury for where the rollout of a meningitis B vaccine to about 5,000 students has begun

Are UK students at risk of more deadly meningitis outbreaks?

The worst seems to be over, but questions remain about why this happened and whether it could happen again.

Hopefully we would have heard by now if ours were being cancelled.

Fingers crossed 🤞 they get it.

Hope so as I’ve paid for the full course.

Jabs X2 done at Boots today.

Handeyethingyowl · 30/03/2026 18:44

I did one child at Boots today, booked a few weeks ago. I have moved my other DC’s appointment to next week but she said don’t cancel because it would be a waiting list if so.

The pharmacist at Boots today told me that their appointments system only lets you book if they have the vaccine in stock so I guess that means you were able to get the appointment for next week because they know they will have it still.

DressToKill · 30/03/2026 20:26

Watch out if you had your appointment cancelled. I have not been refunded by Boots despite them cancelling. I emailed a few days ago but no response so far.

MyOtherProfile · 30/03/2026 22:25

That's terrible.

My Boots appointments were cancelled by phone as well as by text and not refunded but the pharmacist has assured me that puts me at the front of her list for once she has stock in. She did say she’d refund me if I needed.

Thanks for all the updates about stock - I’ll give our local one a call and ask in a day or so about getting our appointments rescheduled. My eldest is home from uni for a fortnight to study for exams so the timing would be ideal.

Cluelessever · 31/03/2026 14:59

I had my boots appointment cancelled last minute as well but somehow managed to find 2 slots in a random small pharmacy which was an hours drive from us.
I drove all the way and got firsr doses for both my children. The hunt is on for the second dose now which will be after min 4 weeks 🔍🫤

MyOtherProfile · 31/03/2026 16:56

I'm hoping stocks will be well replenished by then @Cluelessever

I think you are right and they only have stock for how many appointments they have already booked.

She said they’d be in touch when the second dose was due, and to me this implied that we would be able to book this at that point.

GellerYeller · 31/03/2026 20:16

We got two first doses in a small pharmacy today and they booked the second dose appointments for the end of next month.
We were asked to pay upfront in advance for both doses to secure the slot today. They say if they can’t get a second dose, they will refund the cost of those.

I hope you get better luck than my DS. I still can’t book his second appointment with Boots. Or rebook my older DS’s cancelled first appointment….

GellerYeller · 31/03/2026 20:23

Sorry if it’s already covered upthread, but is the first dose rendered ineffective if you don’t get the second within a certain timescale afterwards?

Abdnshireoutdoorsy · 31/03/2026 21:33

Boots pharmacy called me tonight to say she was just releasing men B appointments and wanted to give me first chance to rebook them through their standard system (I’m very impressed).

If anyone has had an appointment cancelled but not refunded at Boots you could try logging in and seeing if it lets you book at a different Boots (assuming vaccines available) as that’s all I had to do.

I must admit I am expecting this part to be more tricky, especially if we end up on a waiting list. Hope you get one for your older DS soon so you can tick that bit off the list.

I asked the pharmacist and she said no. Even with a big gap the booster will still boost.

DressToKill · 01/04/2026 09:08

I just want my money refunded but Boots gave not respond to my request. Very poor customer services.

DressToKill · 12/04/2026 07:20

Still no sign of a refund, does anyone know the process for complaining before I slate them on social media?
