Meningitis outbreak

I’m freaking out a bit

DD has been here all day after travelling from uni yesterday. Her housemate is really poorly and now I’ve just seen the news about the meningitis outbreak at her uni.

Her housemate is in the house on her own now - I’ve told DD to call the uni and let them know. Worried that DD has been here with us all day in case she gets sick

What abot the other vaccine ? Did it say which was better ?

Delatron · 03/06/2026 20:35

Ooh good work @doopwoop and it does make sense my guy may be more up to date. The latest research may not have filtered down to Boots and GPs yet.

I think if there’s a specific outbreak they try and tailor the vaccine to match it but both cover various men b strains so I don’t think it is a case of one being better than the other. They have some overlap.

This is all new to me. I had no idea there were lots of different strains of men b and the vaccines don’t cover them all.

@doopwoop I'm now waiting 4 months for DS's next dose - I can't wait the optimal 6 months as he is going to uni and obviously needs full protection by then. I have had an auto-reminder from Boots to book my next jab which I've ignored and will wait until the early September dates are released.

@Newlittlerescue that sounds sensible, assuming the AI is correct!

NB I should add a caveat that I didn't read the studies myself personally, and AI is sometimes wrong. But as it based the summary on the studies themselves, and it sounds like it is backed up by @Delatron 's chair of the NPA, it sounds like it is a sensible thing to do.

However anyone in any doubt should perhaps check the studies themselves. I honestly can't make head nor tail of these things, hence asking the AI!

@Newlittlerescue same we will just wait as long as we can before DD goes to uni

HighlightsInHerHair · 12/06/2026 08:11

That’s great news. I wonder if DD will be able to get her second dose as part of the scheme.

I'm sure she will. My friend's son got his second dose as part of the Canterbury outbreak scheme when he'd had his first dose privately.

Yes, good news, The Times also reporting today that “A Million pupils offered jabs for meningitis B”….

Going on to report that it will be offered for all Year 13 pupils and any young adults starting Uni in autumn. First dose next month, second in August… 🌟!

Newlittlerescue · 12/06/2026 09:25

@Muchtoomuchtodo

That articles states "All those who are eligible can continue to get first doses until 31 December 2026; they can get their second dose up to 31 March 2027."

That interval is longer than 4 weeks so it looks as though there is some flex already built in the system.

Delatron · 12/06/2026 09:26

This is really good news.

Wonder If there’s any flexibility with timings. So my DS will be due his second dose in Dec of Yr13. Don’t mind paying if we have to though. Might even take advice on whether he has a booster in the July/Aug.

I’m glad they have recognised that we can go through periods of low activity with Men B and high activity. And they are doing something about it.

Delatron · 12/06/2026 09:27

Is this ongoing or only for one year? I couldn’t work it out in the article.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 12/06/2026 09:31

It doesn’t say if it will continue after this year @Delatron

DS is in year 13 but hoping to defer his university place. I think he’ll take up this vaccine as there’s no guarantee that it will be available this time next year

Delatron · 12/06/2026 09:34

Ah - I wonder if it’s just for this year only. Anyway it’s still good if it brings numbers down and a good amount of teenagers get protected.

Solaire18381 · 12/06/2026 10:02

Absolutely brilliant news! I'm so glad, so many people have campaigned for this after tragic cases.

This administration of the vaccine won't affect my DC as they are too young, but hoping that this is added to the vaccination schedule for all teens when they reach year 13.

MrsJamin · 12/06/2026 12:33

This is great news - I think they had to do this as there had been so many cases in the last year. Thanks so much for sharing the news.
