Meningitis outbreak

I’m freaking out a bit

DD has been here all day after travelling from uni yesterday. Her housemate is really poorly and now I’ve just seen the news about the meningitis outbreak at her uni.

Her housemate is in the house on her own now - I’ve told DD to call the uni and let them know. Worried that DD has been here with us all day in case she gets sick

Sorry if it's been asked but if you suffer with migraines how do you tell the difference?

I've had a headache for 3 days now and have neck pain with it but have had headaches on and off for a couple of weeks overall. I've got used to living with a measure of pain so hard to tell

DressToKill · 25/03/2026 18:28

Face cheeks?

I can assure you that the pain of a migraine is nothing compared to the head pain I experienced when I had meningitis. If you've had a headache for 3 days, it's unlikely it's bacterial meningitis, you would have deteriorated rapidly by now. You need to remember, not everyone has all the symptoms...I didn't have a stiff neck or have an aversion to bright lights. Not all cases present themselves in exactly the same way.

If you're worried, then make an appointment with your GP.

We are left with no private vaccinations when the fatality is 1 in 10... 10%.
The covid fatality was still 0.6%

If govt cant afford, atleast let people know that they must seriously conisider this vaccination on their own finance and they will plan accordingly!

They just silently brushed it under the carpet and now everyone is at risk of this significantly fatal disease.

The risk is no greater today than it was 6 months ago. Have you been worrying about meningitis for your entire life? Or just recently?

So the risk is equal when the there is an outbreak vs no outbreak?

The unusual outbreak in Kent is now over. There are small outbreaks all across the country (and world) all the time. The Kent one was much larger than usual which is why it made the news so quickly. But considering there currently is no known outbreak, yes you are not currently at any higher risk than you were 6 months ago.

I’ve just paid £480 to have my two children vaccinated against Men b. They go back for the 2nd jab in April. When I booked it the cost was £200 each but now £240 each.

Eldest at university now and youngest to go in September.

Wow! 110 a jab at Boots. It's terrible that some companies are profiting from a health scare.

Sisublondie · 28/03/2026 17:32

I just got an email from Boots to remind me to book my DS’s second Men B. Funny old thing, when you click on the link, “ no vaccines, no appointments available”.

MyOtherProfile · 28/03/2026 17:35

We have ours booked for next week and I've had a reminder by email and text. I hope this means they have some in stock.

Not clear whether pp means £200 each for both jabs, or single. If both, and gone up to £240, it’s only £40 more for both DC?

Not if you are with Boots. Well. Not in Scotland or Derbyshire.

I read it as that was just for the first jabs because they haven't had the second yet but maybe she paid for first and second together.

I'm in neither of those places. I have heard of people having their boots appointments cancelled so I'll see if that happens by Monday.

Blueskiesnotgrey · 28/03/2026 17:38

They've always been £110 a vaccine at Boots. That is what I paid for my older children in 2019, and that is what I paid for the ones being done the week after next. The pharmacist has been in touch to change the date from next weekend, but claims they do have stock, lets see.

🤷‍♀️.. Good point… I read it other way, and if it is as you read it, total profiteering from a private clinic. But, given that I’ve just wasted over £400 on my DS’s vaccinations for his big college trip that has been cancelled as it was via Dubai, I’m not loving any vaccinations right now 🙀😹….

Good Luck! My Scotland ones were cancelled, and little DS got his first jab in Derbyshire, reminder to book second, and not able to …..😼

The pharmacist said the price was increased as the supplier had increased the cost.

IsthataNo · 28/03/2026 20:42

So do we think vaccines are available now ?

Cluelessever · 28/03/2026 20:49

Boots says not until start of summer ( last week of June). My Boots appointment got cancelled.
