Meningitis outbreak

I’m freaking out a bit

DD has been here all day after travelling from uni yesterday. Her housemate is really poorly and now I’ve just seen the news about the meningitis outbreak at her uni.

Her housemate is in the house on her own now - I’ve told DD to call the uni and let them know. Worried that DD has been here with us all day in case she gets sick

My first port of call is always twitter. That can be effective.

Still no sign of a refund, does anyone know the process for complaining before I slate them on social media?

I got my refund from Boots almost 10 working days after cancelling

DressToKill · 13/04/2026 06:06

I had booked for two children and was only refunded for one of them. If I didn’t keep such an eagle eye on my bank account I would e missed it. I eventually got through to a phone line but even then they ‘couldn’t find’ my booking so still awaiting a refund. Wouldn’t recommend boots.

We had our original Boots appt yesterday and both were done. Pharmacist said they have stock but that it was luck as they had a large order come in straight after it happened so they were able to satisfy booked demand but arent tak8ng new bookings at the moment. He said the manufacturer is ramping up production but that it is still showing as red and he can't currently order any more.

It didn’t. The article confirms its a different sub strain.

I see thread been quiet, but now managed to have one DS have his first jab in Scotland, and other has had his second in Derbyshire, both at Boots.

Yes, DD has also had her first dose at a Boots yesterday (London).

DressToKill · 05/05/2026 11:45

I still haven’t managed to get Boots to refund me, despite a long call with thief customer services. I also private messaged their instagram but got no response.

Delatron · 05/05/2026 13:42

Gosh this is really putting me off booking with Boots! I hope you all get your refunds

MyOtherProfile · 05/05/2026 16:16

That's so shocking @DressToKill what about a public comment on their twitter?

MyOtherProfile · 05/05/2026 16:16

Actually I think I would go in and ask to speak to the manager in person.

IsthataNo · 05/05/2026 16:28

Are we any clearer on boosters if they had two jabs a few years sgo

My teens have recently had their second jabs and the pharmacist said that in a couple of years time if they're still in a student environment they can book for another booster.

Just seeing on the news they are reporting three new cases in Reading. One student from Henley College has died. But confusingly none of the cases are linked to the Uni so I am
unsure what the Reading link is or why the Uni is mentioned in the news. Henley College is a local school to
us - very worrying and I can only hope that it’s an isolated incident.

There is some discussion as to whether these latest strains are more transmissible. DS is in school doing A-levels in this area. Was going to get the vaccination next year but with this latest outbreak I may bring it forward now.

Sparrow7 · 15/05/2026 09:10

They really need to roll the vaccine out to those teenagers who want it and missed out on early years vaccinations.

Good idea. I think they have traced the contacts to a specific social situation/gathering and are offering them the vaccine

Askingforafriendtoday · 15/05/2026 10:29

And prophylactic antibiotics

Delatron · 15/05/2026 11:18

Managed to get my DS booked in for tomorrow.

It’s all very local to us and they are all constantly mixing at parties.

This is good news that they are acting quickly.

They're saying one of the hospitalised cases is from Highdown School sixth form, where my daughter is in year 9. Way too close to home for my liking and my heart goes out to the parents of the Henley College student who sadly died.

MrsJamin · 15/05/2026 12:39

My son is at Henley College and we're in Reading so it's all very close to us. I hope they do more vaccinations in the area for young people, we could all do without worrying for them. I'd advised DS just to really look out for his friends and know the symptoms off by heart. It's the next best thing to do to prevent any other tragedies. My heart is with the family. It's been confirmed this has nothing to do with Reading Uni btw. It's sixth formers.

HighlightsInHerHair · 15/05/2026 12:45

Completely illogical but I keep thinking - Meningitis B is supposed to be a risk at Uni not 6th form. Poor families affected. My 6th former is booked in for next week for the first dose assuming that the vaccines are not diverted (and fair enough if they are). I am wondering whether to start a bit younger for my younger DC like maybe after GCSEs. But the immunity only lasts so long?

IsthataNo · 15/05/2026 12:48

@MrsJamin will your son still be going to college ?id feel very nervous about sending mine in as pp said they all socialise so much at this age
