Fun fact, just in case you didn't know. The words to these hymns can be transposed to each other's tune. Both are in 3/4 time.

Similarly with Amazing Grace and I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing, although these two have different time signatures.

That's all!

What have I started? Such a rich discussion from a casual observation!

You can sing a lot of hymns to the theme from the muppets.

Yes, such as O Jesus, I have promised.

It's a nice thread. Thank you for starting it.

I've always found While Shepherds Watched a bit annoying but last Christmas was the first time I was introduced to it to the tune of On Ilkley Moor and it was a million times better

I was told, by people more musically literate than me, that any hymn can be sung to On Ilkley Moor l, and that On Ilkley Moor can be sung to any hymn tune
But, they were from the North so might have been exaggerating.

AgentPidge · 14/03/2026 22:35

There's a hymn to the Just One Cornetto tune (give it to me.. delicious ice-cream, from Italy) but I can't think which one.

Which tune for O for a Thousand Tongues? 🤣 because I know it to two regular tunes.

Songs of Praise has it under a tune called O God of Love but says it can also be sung to Richmond, which I know as the tune for City of God, how broad and far.

I like it to Richmond, but I generally get asked to play Lyngham. Which is alright.

Yeah, that’s a northern fabrication 🤣

The tune is 'O Sole Mio' 😂 and I had no idea it was used for a hymn, but I looked it up after your comment and found this:

However, lord of all hopefulness and Be Thou my vision do have the same tune!

Oh yes you're quite right, that's the one I was thinking of.

EconomyClassRockstar · 14/03/2026 23:02

I love a good sing of Immortal Invisible!

feellikeanalien · 14/03/2026 23:13

I now have an ear worm of Be Thou My Vision.

I was brought up attending the Church of Scotland at least once every Sunday and I always remember when we sang a psalm the tune that we were singing it to would also be announced.

So many lovely hymns coming back to me.

Roystonv · 14/03/2026 23:17

Loving hearing about all these old hymns. Girls boarding school 1967 onwards assembly M-F, church on Sunday and sometimes evensong.

Probably only if you’re a contestant on ‘I’m sorry I haven’t a Clue’Grin

MarionHaste · 14/03/2026 23:38

My favourite hymn at school was sung to the tune Gonfalon Royal. These days, I like to sing the words from Larkin’s ‘This Be The Verse’ instead. When I am alone.

BoudiccaRuled · 15/03/2026 00:05

When a Knight won his spurs makes me while heartedly blub, which is awkward as it's my children's school hymn. I love it.

BartokRules · 15/03/2026 00:53

I like to sing I Saw Three Ships to the tune of The Streets of Laredo 😃

EBearhug · 15/03/2026 00:56

LaMarschallin · 14/03/2026 18:05

At secondary school we were startled when the hymn was "There is a Green Hill Far Away" and the teacher on the piano played the "Match of the Day" theme tune 😯
Worked through.

We used to sing There Is a Green Hill Far Away to the tune of The House of the Rising Sun, which works brilliantly.

I am surprised it took so long for ISIHAC to come up. One Song to the Tune of Another can be fab. (I miss Jeremy Hardy.)

Gluedtogether · 15/03/2026 01:08

OT, but my DDs washing machine plays Schubert's "The Trout" when it's finished.

Falderalagain · 15/03/2026 08:54

I've been present when While Shepherds Watched was sung to the tune of The Laughing Policeman. Strange but satisfying.

OccasionalHope · 15/03/2026 09:22

Also I know of two separate hymns to the tune of the Londonderry Air (Danny Boy).

Unrelated but I was surprised that one our baby's toys was playing "jesus hands were kind hands" then found out it was clair de la lune 😂

Jesus' hand were kind hands is the only song I can play on the recorder. If I ever get my hands on one now, I can say it's Clair de Lune. Thanks. 😁

Velvian · 15/03/2026 09:33

I love When a Knight Won His Spurs, it's a classic.

Our school favourite was the one that goes 'light up the fire and let the flame burn, open the door let Jesus return ' I always remember a funny moment when the headmaster came in through the hall door at 'open the door let Jesus return'

Yamyamabroad · 15/03/2026 10:39

Actually - wouldn't "When a knight won his spurs" make a fabulous English national anthem?

Does anyone else follow this chap? He is making a living reminding people of school assembly songs. He even played at Glastonbury and is currently on a nationwide tour. A bit of wholesome nostalgia

Gosh When a knight won his spurs takes me back a long, long time to when I was a little child in primary school. I used to love it. I quite like Immortal Invisible as well.
Unfortunately I'm a long time atheist but still with a great liking for hymns and carols.

Me too! I love so many of the traditional hymns I grew up with at school.
