Fun fact, just in case you didn't know. The words to these hymns can be transposed to each other's tune. Both are in 3/4 time.

Similarly with Amazing Grace and I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing, although these two have different time signatures.

That's all!

We had The King of Love My Shepherd is at school too. Not heard it for years. We had a lot lot of Welsh hymns too and I’m often surprised when I hear an English hymn sung to one of the tunes.

HelenaWilson · 15/03/2026 11:47

Also I know of two separate hymns to the tune of the Londonderry Air (Danny Boy).

O Son of man our hero strong and tender
whose servants are the brave in all the earth

Don't think I know the other one.

The one we sing to the LA is:
"I cannot tell why He whom angels worship".

The tune is 'O Sole Mio' 😂 and I had no idea it was used for a hymn, but I looked it up after your comment and found this:
(Down from His glory)

That's it! The "Cornetto" bit is sublime! I never could keep a straight face.

PropitiousJump · 15/03/2026 12:04

@NeverDropYourMooncup DH & I are listening to the songs to different tunes now - currently on 'Girlfriend in a Coma' to 'Tiptoe Through the Tulips' - both in fits of laughter - thanks so much for cheering up our Sunday morning (we both have stinking colds).😆

HelenaWilson · 15/03/2026 12:22

O Sole Mio is also It's Now or Never by Elvis.

Catcatcatcatcat · 15/03/2026 12:23

I bloody love When A Knight Won His Spurs!

What was wrong with my list of hymn tunes ?

BoudiccaRuled · 15/03/2026 00:05

When a Knight won his spurs makes me while heartedly blub, which is awkward as it's my children's school hymn. I love it.

Me too! I always loved that hymn. We used to have daily assembly in school and always sang hymns. I also loved Lord of All Hopefulness, especially the final line to each verse.
Classical music pieces were played (and announced) in morning assembly, it broadened my musical knowledge immensely. Lots of Purcell, iirc.

AI has likely messed up, if you report the post and ask MNHQ, they'll unhide it.

LBFseBrom · 15/03/2026 12:40

I remember those from Assembly at school.

OK thanks.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/03/2026 12:48

At my first school you were given your own hymn book (Songs of Praise) once they thought you could read well enough, so it was very exciting to get it. Until then we were told to ‘sing it to la’.

I once happened to overhear a community hymn singing session in a church. The pianist was playing the Dambusters March. Apparently it is also used as a hymn tune.

I'm going to have Immortal, invisible in my head now. Still remember the words from schooldays, a very long time ago.

God is our strength and refuge. A school favourite.

PropitiousJump · 15/03/2026 13:04

It's a fascinating thing with the transposed tunes and lyrics - it really does expose the banality of some supposedly serious songs 😆

On the other hand, 'My Old Man's A Dustman' sounded like a heartrending indictment of working class poverty when sung to 'The Power of Love' (Jennifer Rush version) 😯

Kingdomofsleep · 15/03/2026 13:16

That index of meters is so fun, you can fit other folk song tunes into the categories... While Shepherds Watched their Flocks can be sung to The Miller of Dee and actually works better I reckon

Yes, that's one of them. I can never remember the name of the other one although we've sung it several times.

Yamyamabroad · 15/03/2026 10:39

Actually - wouldn't "When a knight won his spurs" make a fabulous English national anthem?

Does anyone else follow this chap? He is making a living reminding people of school assembly songs. He even played at Glastonbury and is currently on a nationwide tour. A bit of wholesome nostalgia

Edited

We are going to see him on tour in a few weeks, this thread has really whetted my appetite for it.

TheTecknician · 15/03/2026 20:54

Slightly OT but I can think of three songs from the 70s/80s that all use essentially the same backing track:

You Can Do It by Al Hudson and The Partners
Don't Push It, Don't Force It by Leon Haywood
Ladies' Night by Kool and The Gang

Also, Caravan of Love by Isley Jasper Isley and Shake You Down by Gregory Abbot are virtually indistinguishable!

Off The Wall by Michael Jackson and Boogie Nights by Heatwave share the same source. Jeff Lynne took note for 'Last Train To London'.

1999 (Prince) and Manic Monday (the Bangles but written by Prince) are interchangeable.

JustGiveMeReason · 15/03/2026 21:57

I think 'The King of Love My Shepherd Is' is a relatively well known hymn.

Used to be quite popular at weddings back in the day.

JustGiveMeReason · 15/03/2026 21:59

Methodists have some extra 'twiddles' (technical musical term Wink) in 'Immortal, Invisible'. It used to really annoy our music teacher back in the day when we sang the twiddles if we sang it in assembly Grin

PingoDome · 15/03/2026 22:07

it tells you that you can sing O little town of Bethlehem to It came upon the midnight clear and vice versa.

They also go rather well sung to the Archers theme tune.
