When did your DS catch up with you height wise?

How tall are you and at what age did your DS catch with you?
(Specifically DSs as they typically tend to grow taller than their mothers)

I'm 5'7 and just realised this morning that DS just turned 12 was eyeball to eyeball with me.
Older DDs are 5'9 and 5'8.

Never 😟
I’m 5’8’’

WonkyMirror · 13/03/2026 12:32

I am 5’7”, my DH is 6’2”. My DS is 6’1” and passed me at about 14, my DD is 5’9” and passed me at 13. Everyone has stopped growing now.

@SushiSheep I am curious why you didnt ask about DDs?

My daughter is taller than me at 12 and she loves to tell me about it. My DD2 is making strides in the same direction.

I just wondered why your post was exclusive to boys.

I’m 5.8 and he’s just overtaken me now at 13.

TheMasterplan23 · 13/03/2026 17:59

I’m 5’10 and DS overtook me when he was 13. He’s nearly 16 now and 6ft 3 with size 14 feet.

The amount I’ve spent in football boots is ridiculous 😢

saffy2 · 13/03/2026 18:10

I’m 5ft 5. He was about 10 ish. He is 16 now and is 6ft 2.

SushiSheep · 13/03/2026 11:00

DH is 6’1 so DS has a good chance of being a 6 footer!

I don’t know where our son’s height has come from. I’m 5ft 5 and his dad is 5ft 10! 😂

YouCanNeverHaveTooMuchCake · 13/03/2026 18:12

My kids overtook me in height at the age of about 10! I'm 5ft 1. One son is 6ft 2, the other 5ft 11

Frikadelle · 12/03/2026 20:44

I’m 5”8 and was overtaken at 11. At 14 he’s 6”4. I hope he stops growing soon, especially the feet.

Yes the feet! My ds does seem
to have stopped in the feet department at 12. It’s been just over a year with no growth.
he has grown an inch in the last year though, so he hasn’t stopped growing completely yet!

My youngest DS was 11 nearly 12 I'm 5ft 5 he's now 17 and 6ft 2.5"

Harmonypus · 13/03/2026 19:16

I was 5'11¾" when my boys were growing up.
My elder son passed me at 12, and my younger son caught me up at 16.
They've got different fathers (6'2" and 5'6"), so I never expected them to both overtake me.
They're now 37 and 29 and stand at 6'4" and 6'0" respectively, whilst I'm slowly shrinking.

WhoStoleAllTheUserNames · 13/03/2026 19:20

I’m 5 foot 5. DS1 overtook me just after he turned 13. He’s currently 16 and 6 foot 2.

DS2 is just turned 15 and currently up to my eyebrows, poor titch.

Because for women, their daughters aren’t that likely to end up loads taller than them - some will be taller, some shorter, some the same height as their mums. But as mentioned upthread, boys will nearly always end up taller than their mums so it’s interesting to hear the range of ages that happens at.

Sometimes we’re allowed to just talk about sons.

It’s very odd having a giant child look down on you from one foot further up.

user1471453601 · 13/03/2026 19:30

They still havent, and as child is now 55 im not expecting a growth spurt.

they've steadfastly refused to believe me when I've told them what my height is. Not really unreasonable of them because most of my standing moments occur when I'm clinging onto my walker so a bit hunched over.

adult child was with me this week when I was measured and weighed in hospital. I took great pleasure in asking the nurse to tell my adult child what my height was.

by the way, it's one of those family jokes that signifies only deep affection.

Jenhen1982 · 13/03/2026 19:30

I’m 5 ft 3 and my son is eye ball to eye ball with me now and he’s only 10! 🤣

ethelredonagoodday · 13/03/2026 19:33

my DS is nearly 13 and 5ft11. I think he overtook me 18 months ago. So when he was 11.5.
Im only 5.6 though!

This can happen to mothers of daughters too - just FYI.

I wasn’t trying to dictate what anyone is allowed to talk about - I was curious.

Crwysmam · 13/03/2026 19:38

I’m 5’7” and DS21 is 6’3”. He was always tall for his age and I think he overtook me sometime between 13-14yrs. I’ve noticed over the years that boys who are always tall for their age tend to go through puberty a little later than their peers particularly if they are destined to be giants. If you think about it it is going to take longer to reach their predetermined height. DS used to grow, on average, 10cm a year. Then put in a bigger spurt between 15 and 16 which for coincided with lockdown. His form tutor commented on how much he had grown when they returned to school.

During his midteens he was eating the whole fridge contents in 24hrs. This continued until very recently because he still looked very teenagery, long legs and everything a bit stretched out. In the last 12months he has bulked out and is more adult male shape. They can continue to grow up to 25 and I suspect he still has a few more cm to go.

When he’s home he’s comes in handy reaching for things and has no problem cleaning the roof of the cars when we wash them. However he’s always commenting on my greying hair since he’s able to see the top of my head.

Being tall and athletic is great but clothing DS can be a struggle because like me he has disproportionately long legs so shorts can be a bit short and most of the sports manufacturers don’t do different lengths. The advantage he has with long legs is that sitting down he looks about 5’10”, when someone gives him hassle he just has to stand up and they immediately back off.

NotnowMildrid · 13/03/2026 19:47

At 12 years old. I’m 5.8ft
He’s 6.5ft now.

heartsinvisiblefury · 13/03/2026 19:53

Mine hasn’t. I’m 5, 5 and so is he and he’s 21

TheHouse · 13/03/2026 19:56

He was year 10.

im also 5 foot 7. He was the smallest in his year group in years 7, 8 and 9. He’s in year 11 now and 6 foot 2. He had a lot of joint pain and clunking/grinding etc because his growth was too rapid, it would have been far better if had had a more steady line. His younger brother appears to be growing more steady so fingers crossed.

MsJJones · 13/03/2026 19:59

I am 5’3. DS has just outgrown me in the last few months since he turned 13. His dad is 6’2 and DS has always wanted to grow as tall as him which may not happen so he has been a bit down about it.

Interesting point about puberty from a pp. DS hasn’t really shown many signs of it until recently - very faint top lip fluff and slightly deeper voice but no hair, spots or teenage smell yet (quite grumpy though). His feet have grown a lot though which apparently happens first so maybe the rest of him will catch up.

I agree it’s interesting as when they are babies it’s so hard to imagine them bigger than us but inevitably they will be.

Underpaidsnackbitch · 13/03/2026 20:07

I'm 5'8" and my son matched my height when he was 11. At almost 13 now he towers over me! He has always been very tall for his age being the tallest in his year group.

SushiSheep · 13/03/2026 20:16

Hi @CocoaTea
I have DDs too (as in the OP) but I was just curious about the DSs as I stated in my OP, boys do tend to be taller than their mums.
It just struck me because I literally noticed overnight my DS was the height as me!
Talk about DDs heights in relation to their parents is also welcome.
Chat always evolve as the thread moves on.
I mentioned my DDs heights in the OP, and a few others have also mentioned their DDs.
