That's according to BBC news. Can't say I'm sorry.

So the rapist/paedophile/murderer is more likely to walk free?

Yep. It’s harder to convict someone if you know that conviction is going to lead to their death.

Not a deterrent. A punishment. A dead murderer, rapist, or paedophile can't commit any more abhorrent crimes.

The pp said it was a deterrent.

Also in states where the death penalty exists juries are less likely to convict

This is a longstanding pattern in the criminal justice system going back hundreds of years in this country. So dangerous people are more likely to walk free if the penalty is capital.

I don’t feel sorry he’s dead, but I’m pretty horrified that our prisons are so violent. It’s dangerous not just for the prisoners but also for staff. This should not be happening as often as it is.

I know, but I'm concerned with punishment, though. No rehabilitation for murderers, rapists, or pedophiles as far as I'm concerned.

It just feels like a 20 year nightmare that has finally ended. Upon hearing of his imminent death, apart from relief, one of my first thoughts was what his afterlife will be like. I imagine he will be eternally living in the shadows unable to be happy or make peace with himself.

Edited

It’s not really about you is it? Unless you’re the family of the family of the children he killed, your ‘relief’ is entirely irrelevant. And I’m sure the families of the people killed by the other man are not feeling ‘relieved’ by any of this.

It's just how I felt ? Why are you upset with me ?

I’m not upset at all, I just think it’s a bit surprising to make it about how you feel. Or to feel any emotion about it all actually, unless you’re directly involved.

You know what makes it even more dangerous for staff? The attitudes on this thread.

bang them up, no contact, no visits, no tv…..all those things add up to create a problem. But that seems to be what people want. Drive them into a downward spiral where mental health declines further? No. That’s not a prison service I would want to be a part of.

I'm not making it about me. Of course I know it isn't me it affected. I just did feel relieved that the man is dead I can't help how I feel why are other people allowed to feel glad ?

You’re allowed to feel however you feel and say whatever you want. And I’m allowed to respond. I’ve also said I think it’s odd that people are glad.

Gentle reminder: Nicola Wells has explicitly asked people to stop sharing the picture of Holly and Jessica in Man United kits, as the family want to reclaim the image for themselves.

His name should never be mentioned again, his death must have triggered his victims families all over again. You live by the sword, you die with the sword.

Viviennemary · 07/03/2026 20:23

I don't have sympathy for Ian Huntley. But it is scarey that a violent prisoner had access to a metal pole witha spike. Which was used as a murder weapon. A member of the prison staff could have been the victim.

Not more scary than very many other things.
The end result is still pleasing.

I'm 'lessons will be learned'.

As ever.

What's quite nice about someone who's been convicted of rape and murder, being able to keep on murdering , despite being convicted and incarcerated?

Surely, by any conceivable measure of punishment or rehabilitation, that must count as an object and total failure of our prison system?

Given that the prisoner was able to get hold of a weapon and murder someone, it worked out well that it was only another murderer he killed.

Clearly it would be preferable for the sake of the prison employees' safety if he hadn't been able to access a weapon...but given he did, things could have been much worse. Instead a murderer is dead, and his killer is never getting out of prison. I'm not upset about that.

(Although I do feel bad for the prison employees who witnessed it/cleaned up the aftermath.)

It's good to try and see the positives, I agree.

You seem nice.

You think it makes a person 'not nice' to want the death penalty for rapists, murderers, and paedophiles?

You could argue the death penalty is too risky or unethical to enact in society, but why on earth do you think that wishing murderers, rapists, and paedophiles dead makes someone a bad person?

SharonEllis · 07/03/2026 21:42

LoyalMember · 07/03/2026 20:57

It's of no concern to me what you think. Am I wrong, though?

Of course you're wrong. You can't have a blanket policy of no rehabilitation for all serious criminals. There is no evidence whatsoever that that makes for a civilised society.

I hope that cunt died a horrible death.

My ex worked in a prison and he encountered Harold Shipman when he was on remand. He was shouting 'Im not like them, I shouldn't be here'

He did. He was blind in his last hours.
