Net curtains are not a legal requirement!!??

NetcurtainProblem · 06/03/2026 17:41

Have had a visit from the person whose house backs onto ours. We have small gardens so it’s very close (new build estate).

She asked me to get net curtains! Apparently it’s a legal requirement for privacy and modesty reasons when houses are so close together ?
That they can see me eating in my kitchen and can see directly into my bedroom.

If I’m getting dressed / changed I shut the actual curtains??

In the morning I do like to open them and have tea / breakfast in bed. I’m not doing naked pilates or anything!
My kitchen table faces out towards the garden but I fail to see how them being able to see me eating is a modesty issue ?

I explained I don’t like nets. Also I can see that they have nets????!!!!!

She told me she will take it further as it could be seen as a nuisance issue ?

From what I see when travelling round, plenty of houses still have them, probably out of necessity. Blinds can be expensive, shutters even more so, nets are cheap in comparison.

That poster was correct though. Hardly anyone does have them nowadays as they aren't "on trend" and are seen as dated not like they were in say the 80s when nearly every house had them. So her conversational comment was justified in the context of this thread.

I got my net curtains in the 80's. Those same net curtains are still doing a perfectly good job.

Why doesn’t she get net curtains then?

She does - it’s in her post 🙄

That's good and it's great you still like them and that they still go with your style and decor. It doesn't mean everyone else should have them or should like them.

Absolutely no one is saying the OP should!!

And no one is saying everyone else should!

Somersetbaker · 07/03/2026 13:21

A quick survey, through my (un-netted) windows, reveals that venetian blinds or just curtains are much more popular, a couple of houses have nets on the downstairs windows but only one has a net on the bedroom windows. All the houses are separated from the pavement by a 3ft ransom strip

The neighbour is actually telling OP she should. Hence she started the thread.

LadyLolaRuben · 07/03/2026 13:32

Id be asking which law in this country states we must have net curtains and if possible, the section number of that law.

Whether I agreed with her or not I hate the idea of anyone seeing me inside my house (accidentally or otherwise). I like the fact my house is not easily overlooked and even my front door is away from passers by. So for me I would have to have blinds or something, not to appease the neighbour but for my own need for privacy.

Which is why I think OP is a bloke.
An exhibitionist in any event.

Interesting, but there's also been lots of posters who say they’d put on a show deliberately. I can’t relate to that at all. My home is my sanctuary and safe place away from other people, if someone told me they could see in I wouldn’t be thinking nosy bitch, I’d be out buying blinds or whatever. My home isn’t a stage.

I think I’d be deep throating a banana every day just for the shits and giggles 😂

Would it not bother you though that people can see you inside your house? I’d really hate that.

Charlize43 · 07/03/2026 14:02

I think you've answered your own question: naked pilates. The solution is in there somewhere. 😂

Duchess379 · 07/03/2026 14:10

I too live in a new build. Only one neighbour has net curtains but they are of the older generation (late 70s)
The rest of us have blinds.
I think you should do the naked pilates, what a hoot!!

SimplyReadHead · 07/03/2026 14:13

Is she actively peeling back her own net curtains to look at you? If so, maybe suggest that she stops doing that!

I never said other people should have them or like them. I'm merely responding to a comment about the 80's and that I've had mine ever since.

They aren't there to go with style or decor, they are there because our living room window is gigantic.
Confused

RedRiverShore6 · 07/03/2026 15:24

Have you got no fence, or can they just see from upstairs because it would be hard to see from downstairs as boundary fence or hedges would be in the way.

NetcurtainProblem · 06/03/2026 17:44

She has !!!!!

Well she must be studying you looking for you. That's ridiculous, ignore get in with your life. Bet curtains are vile anyway

Why should the OP? This is not her problem.

Redragtoabull · 07/03/2026 19:19

Take no notice of the div ... or go and paint her windows black

I believe, if memory serves, that I’m not allowed to keep a pig. Nowt about net curtains though and I’d burn the house down before I hung those abominations about the place.

I lived here for several months before I had any curtains or blinds and no-one suffered lasting PTSD, and I still keep the blinds open in summer. Mind you, I’d like the people over the back to maybe think about some for the bathroom - despite their frosted glass, if the light is on I can see the husband sitting on the loo, having a shower or, erm, enjoying a bit of personal time. It’s a bit much at 6am, I must say.

Mine does not allow me to keep a pig either, but strangely says nothing about other livestock! Our Conveyancer said that no-one would ever be coming back to us on that once all the properties on a new build had been sold. Not that we did ever get a pig… OPs neighbour sounds properly bonkers. I’m fascinated who she thinks she’ll be reporting this to.

Oh my goodness. How shameful.

I can't remember the last time I thoroughly washed my arse crack. He's a lesson to us all.

Oh my god, i have has a monumentally shitty week and I am so sorry @NetcurtainProblem but this has literally made me spit my tea out laughing.

Thank you so very much for this!!!!

Your neighbour is batshit!

If it helps, we had a lady, not old by any means, probably mid to late 50's, who called out to me during the heatwave mid way through covid lockdown 6x̌1 to tell me it was illegal to peg my knickers out ok the line. As a larger lady with an unapologetic love of massive pants I told her to just think of them as a sun shade sail and wandered back into the house (in my nightie no less)

I’ve had a terrible day and this absolutely cheered me up so thank you for paying it forward 😭🤣 sadly I don’t have any batshit neighbour story to thank you with xxxx

I have windows, I will admit I love watching people walking past the house - I’m nosey and it is great fun when they notice you watching them watching you 😂

If I don’t want people to see in I shut the blinds/curtains. I don’t shut them specifically to eat my dinner.
