Net curtains are not a legal requirement!!??

NetcurtainProblem · 06/03/2026 17:41

Have had a visit from the person whose house backs onto ours. We have small gardens so it’s very close (new build estate).

She asked me to get net curtains! Apparently it’s a legal requirement for privacy and modesty reasons when houses are so close together ?
That they can see me eating in my kitchen and can see directly into my bedroom.

If I’m getting dressed / changed I shut the actual curtains??

In the morning I do like to open them and have tea / breakfast in bed. I’m not doing naked pilates or anything!
My kitchen table faces out towards the garden but I fail to see how them being able to see me eating is a modesty issue ?

I explained I don’t like nets. Also I can see that they have nets????!!!!!

She told me she will take it further as it could be seen as a nuisance issue ?

quick question 🙋‍♀️
where do you even go to buy net curtains these days? Roseburys and Woolworths are long gone 😂

or you could say you preferred blinds but can’t afford them but if she’s willing to pay for them then you will get Hillary’s round to measure up (and send her the quote for the top of the range ones!!)

This is absolutely batshit crazy

I know new houses are notorious for small
rooms and gardens erc but surely you have fences between houses?! How can she see your kitchen?

We recently viewed a new build property. The house was positioned slightly lower than the ones to the back that looked down on it, so was totally exposed to 3 properties. I don't know who would buy such a place, but we made our excuses and left.

OP not read full thread but you can buy stick on mirror film for windows. People cant see in but you can see out. Amazon has loads.

Put up fairy lights that flash annoyingly in different flashing patterns at the window.

BTW I read the info about Netherlands people this week too.

This reminds me of my mum’s neighbour who lived opposite. She knocked on my mum’s door on a hot sunny day to ask her to close her front room window as it was reflecting the light into her own front room!

SauronsArsehole · 06/03/2026 23:23

The only solution is to get those celebrity cardboard cut outs from Amazon and start arranging them around your living space. Bonus points if they’re waving and you can get Ross kemp in a hedge.

KingdomKey · 06/03/2026 23:28

You could buy a hologram

Like the ones you see on buildings in Asia, that move & look real

Who has net curtains these days! Tell her to stop perving on you or you'll report her.

Me (technically they're voiles) but I like the privacy as I'm in a ground floor flat and my living room and bedroom face the street. Someone near where I used to live had ones with holographic sequins which I think are really cool, but I couldn't find any. I get enough light to make my hanging crystals all sparkly though!

Crudd99 · 07/03/2026 00:10

As someone who used to have net curtains and a nosey mum you have to get right up close to the net curtains to see out of them. Literally nose to curtains. So she must be putting some effort in to be able to see you. Also how can she see all the way into your home as usually its darker I'n the room than outside so you can't see past the window area.

Dunelm do them, only have them in one room as the strange layout of the houses does make it better for privacy for one upstairs room where we are.

Tell her to stop staring at your property then! What a weirdo 🤪

Exactly.

Tell this peeping tom to cease and desist straining to peer inside your home.
Nutty old lady.

Or - you could present her with a pair of fancy opera glasses with the message that they’re to make her life easier.
Then call her a perv.

Friendlygingercat · 07/03/2026 01:04

I would have a lot of fun with this but then I can be a bitch with whining neighbours

My hall widow is sort of opposite my neighbour's hall window a garage length away at the side. I have voil there as bathroom door near it too. They have a blind. Neighbour sounds mad. She should put something up her end if doesnt want to see things.

StarlightLady · 07/03/2026 05:12

I can’t sleep and this has been the best thread ever 😂.

if this batshit woman comes back, ask her to cite the legislation she is referring to.

She would love me. No nets in this house, l have a nice garden and like to see it and enjoy watching the birds feeding. Sometime in the summer, l lay in the garden topless. I can be seen if someone goes to a lot of effort, but they risk falling out of their windows.

RedRiverShore6 · 07/03/2026 06:36

We have nets on our side windows, they are William Morris pattern voile panels, one is sunflowers and the other willow, I thought they looked quite nice, I bought them from Next.

Silverbirchleaf · 07/03/2026 06:58

Plant some leylandi trees on her border.

DP thinks it’s funny and wants to have an elaborate breakfast in bed but I feel slightly worried what if this is because of her dh and he’s a real weirdo or something I don’t want to really take the piss and he takes great offence !

If she is older, she may be remembering or have heard of the sections of various building regulations on "modesty", these gave rise to the requirement for obscured glass on bathroom windows (no longer a requirement) and that electric light fittings in bedrooms had to be positioned centred to the window and no more than 3 feet from that window to prevent a silhouette show! (that's why in older houses the ceiling light point is often off centre to the room, near the window). But its all history...

Thanks for this, I have always wondered about the weird bedroom light placements in my 1950s house.

Who knew!

No obscured glass in the bathroom tho.

You do have to have obscured glass on upstairs side landing windows if they face a neighbour's house though, we haven't but new houses have to and I'm not having the window replaced to find out if we have to with a replacement window

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 07/03/2026 08:23

Are you in Birmingham perchance? I have never seen so many nets since the 80s, when i've driven through.
If you do, then it's a must, surely 😂

@Imlyingandthatsthetruth wrote the net curtains in Downing Street and Buck palace, and in fact all government buildings, are there to protect against bomb blast

I did not know that. Is it normal net, there to be a barrier against flying glass etc being blown into the building, or is it some cunningly invented fabric which gives more protection?

I think it's just a heavy duty net rather than the flimsy nylon stuff.
