Net curtains are not a legal requirement!!??

NetcurtainProblem · 06/03/2026 17:41

Have had a visit from the person whose house backs onto ours. We have small gardens so it’s very close (new build estate).

She asked me to get net curtains! Apparently it’s a legal requirement for privacy and modesty reasons when houses are so close together ?
That they can see me eating in my kitchen and can see directly into my bedroom.

If I’m getting dressed / changed I shut the actual curtains??

In the morning I do like to open them and have tea / breakfast in bed. I’m not doing naked pilates or anything!
My kitchen table faces out towards the garden but I fail to see how them being able to see me eating is a modesty issue ?

I explained I don’t like nets. Also I can see that they have nets????!!!!!

She told me she will take it further as it could be seen as a nuisance issue ?

😂😂😂 Tell her it's actually the proper thing to get shutters, and you're game if she's paying!

onelumporthree · 06/03/2026 18:06

Tell her you're thinking of planting a nice tall leylandii hedge. That should shut her up.😂

Ew net curtains are gross

Fortunately the Net Curtain Law has a travel/garden option *

And is a bargain at £6 on Amazon, much cheaper than nets for all your windows, if you live alone.

*can also be used for raiding the local bank, so multi purpose too.

Net curtains are not a legal requirement!!??

Net curtains are horrible. That is my considered opinion.

Well I’m younger yes but I’m very average looking and I don’t eat particularly seductively so hopefully not !!

Well I think now is a good time to start eating seductively.

7238SM · 06/03/2026 18:17

@PineappleCoconut You win!!! 😆

I'm 99% sure there would be no clause/legal requirement for net curtains!
IF you did want more privacy, I'd look into that one way, mirrored window screen you peel and put on. It only works in the day time though, but means you can look out and they can't see in.

TheMorgenmuffel · 06/03/2026 18:19

Thats hilarious.
Laugh in her face and tell her you very much look forward to the court case.

Alpacajigsaw · 06/03/2026 18:20

Tell her to put the binoculars down

😂Oh yes, licking of yoghurt lids required, maybe some alluring strawberries too!

MrsHaroldWilson · 06/03/2026 18:21

Is it possible there's a covenant on your deeds? Never heard of ones for nets but they do sometimes dictate odd things like what colour your door should be and whether you can have a washing line in your front garden.

Happyjoe · 06/03/2026 18:25

I would start waving, or holding up a sign saying hello at the window.
Strange neighbours.

ThatGreenCrab · 06/03/2026 18:25

Best thread of the day!

PenelopeAsks · 06/03/2026 18:27

She can only see you if she is looking. Weirdo.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 06/03/2026 18:29

Where did she get that idea from? But maybe it’s not uncommon. After he moved to a new house on a relatively new estate, one of the neighbours told my FiL that he must hang net curtains in his front windows - it was an ‘official’ requirement. Also that hanging washing to dry his back garden was strictly against the rules. I’m pleased to say that he ignored both edicts and funnily enough, there was no visit from anyone outraged by the sight of his Y fronts, let alone any vigilante with a baseball bat.

onelumporthree · 06/03/2026 18:30

"I can see inside your house!! You have to put up some net curtains to stop me!!"

So basically she wants you to put up net curtains to prevent her from staring into your home. Why doesn't she just stop looking?

Privacy laws there are to protect the privacy of the person inside the house from people looking in. She has net curtains up so her privacy is protected. You have no such concerns and you don't feel the need to protect your own privacy in the same way.

Gingercatlover · 06/03/2026 18:35

She sounds crackers! How can she see you through her nets though? only one person I know has them and you literally can’t see through them, very strange.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 06/03/2026 18:37

You know you now need to take up naked pilates....

Pushmepullu · 06/03/2026 18:37

We have net curtains in every room other than the kitchen where we have a roller blind. I like my privacy! Talking to a neighbour about 18 months ago she informed me that she can see me cooking, and drinking wine as I go along! This house isn’t that close so she either has fantastic eyesight or has binoculars. I drink coconut water straight out of the carton, I’m waiting for her to mention that too. (I’m the only one who drinks it, so it’s not unhygienic!).

OP, ignore the silly cow, it’s not the law. However, as you say it’s now making you feel self conscious so I would put up some muslins and draw them back during the day once you’ve finished breakfast.

lol. Oh no! I think I might get a visit from the net curtain police! I have none! My windows are uncovered by the frippery of nets! I hate the stuff.

BelleEpoque27 · 06/03/2026 18:39

Time to start walking around naked, OP!

You can see through nets. They are sheer, not thick heavyweight upholstery fabric!

damelza · 06/03/2026 18:40

I honestly wouldn't like to be overlooked either by the Ms. potty netties of this world. I'd get that reflective window film so I can see out, but no one can see in. Just because I'd feel less watched, even if I'm not IYSWIM!

But I have a park at the back so that's ok. So I have neither nets, reflective film or curtains. Don't need em...

Itsmetheflamingo · 06/03/2026 18:40

She’s thick and thinks you’re thick. They’re the people who pretend outrageous demands are “the law” and don’t realise that normal people are smart enough to know it’s crap

MyDeftDuck · 06/03/2026 18:40

Give her a quote from the Bible…….’if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out’! ……..or words to that effect.
