The ducks extract their own down by plucking it from their breasts to line their nests. They raise their young and then they all fuck off, leaving the down-lined nests behind. People go and collect the down from the empty nests.

The eider ducks don't give a toss, and come back the next year to do the same thing all over again.

I adore the idea of the eider duck caretakers putting out little landing flags to let the ducks know where to come in safely and nest happily.

"Here we are girls, I can see the blue and red and white flags, get ready to land, we're home again!"
