The idea of assassinating the Ayatollah Khamenei who was not just Iran's head of state but he was the religious symbol for Shiites worldwide. Assassinating him during the month of Ramadan is about as subtle as murdering the Pope on the steps of St Peter's in Holy Week.

Exactly this - it’s about the most inflammatory thing the could have done.

boatyardblues · 08/03/2026 13:29

I caught the R4 news in the car. Tony Blair is criticising Keir Starmer. Sensible statement from Yvette Cooper telling Tone to wind his neck in as he’s not in the cabinet or receiving current briefings. That man needs to butt out.

This is well worth a listen, imo
Intelligence Squared | Fiona Hill: The World in 2026 (Part One) https://www.podbean.com/ea/dir-mbu97-2bbfdbe4
Hill cautions that we are not in a second Cold War, but in a more volatile era of asymmetric threats. She warns that Trump’s engagement with autocratic leaders such as Putin and Xi is strengthening authoritarian regimes and eroding long‑standing alliances, and highlights sabotage and disinformation – the kind of threats seen in recent incidents such as the Russian spy‑ship Yantar encroaching on UK waters and the rail explosion in Poland.
Hill came to the Intelligence Squared stage in February 2026 where, in conversation with journalist Jon Sopel, she set out the practical steps she believes the West must take to bolster its resilience and safeguard security and stability.

Wow -- as first spotted by @ BadFoxGraphics on X, Fox & Friends this morning used old footage of a previous dignified transfer to mislead their audience about the fact that Trump wore a baseball cap during the one yesterday

Wow. I did see the white baseball cap and did think "dignified ? ". It should be no hat. That complicates a salute of course, but in that case an Army cap could be worn ? Or even a flat cap I suppose.

Those would be the carriers we now need to move for our own defence because British bases are being attacked because he started a war of choice?

But I guess if something isn't happening to Donald, it isn't happening.

But I guess if something isn't happening to Donald, it isn't happening.

This is the personality basis of a narcissist so you've just landed a hole in one!

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 08/03/2026 15:06

It’s OK, Donald has never worn a tan suit whilst president, so his sartorial choices are only to be praised.

AcrossthePond55 · 08/03/2026 15:15

"No one left to surrender", eh?

I guess he's learnt his lesson after Venezuela (of which he wasn't appointed Dear Leader, King, or High Cockalorum amid wild acclaim as he expected) that leaving a 'power structure' of any kind leads to pushback by the 'new regime'. And even a little pushback is intolerable to one who expects slavering adoration. So let's annihilate everyone, lay waste to everything so he can ride in to the capital (in a bullet proof limo) to total decimation and empty streets and declare himself the 'Saviour of the Country'.

Obama was also criticised on Fox many a time for not saluting the military when getting off air force one. And it is a bit of a minefield. The brit military never salute without hats on, some US branches do, some don't. And there is the whole military v civilian thing.

Beware the Ides of March - Trump Thread #156

People are now hitting desalination plants? Fuck that's awful.

The massive refugee crisis coming is bound to go over well with the architects and cheerleaders of current actions.

That is terrible.

As if any of them are going to do anything but tell the refugees to go back home, they don’t belong anywhere else and it’s their own fault for choosing to live in a war zone anyway.

Words cannot express how much I hate Trump and his supporters. This is down to them and no-one else. Bastards.

Bharain said no significant loss of capacity. Iran say it was cos US hit one of theirs. Bharain has the US navy HQ thing. Trump says all Iranian missile dumps have been targeted. The US suggests the Iranian missiles are so inaccurate that could not hit the Isle of White from Southampton, unless they hit something a bit important, so they change to "Iran deliberately targeted" with missiles they no longer have.

I just toss a coin to try figure it out.

The first entry on that thread reads:
Fox & Friends: "We want to acknowledge a mistake made earlier on our program. During our coverage of yesterday's dignified transfer, we inadvertently aired video from an older dignified transfer instead of the ceremony that took place yesterday. We deeply regret the error."

How on earth can they 'inadvertently' air video footage from an older dignified transfer? What utter bollocks. It's such a lame excuse that it would be laughable, if it were not such a serious event.

The presenter literally named the Melania Trump, Vice-President JD Vance and Usha Vance as attending the ceremony, while the old video played with none of them there.

Yep, looking forward to Trump's 5 billion dollar lawsuit against Fox...

It's maybe a bit tenuous if I say Fox is state news for the Trump regime. But if we say they are, I would have won a mumsnet rhetorical bet I was thinking of posting yesterday.....

That somehow, just somehow, the Trump admin would manage to fuck up the "dignified repatriation".

At the time tough " why bother ?".

Everyone on this thread knew they would fuck it up.

The white baseball cap was a fuck up anyway.

I read something yesterday about military protocol - civilians, including the Commander in Chief, replace the military salute with a hand over the heart, IIRC.

Most MSM showed the correct footage, including descriptions/photos of Trump in the hat, and highlighted the controversy. However, Fox started with airing old hatless footage, admitted it was a "mistake," apologized, and then aired edited footage excluding Trump entirely in some segments. They really are shameless.

Sounds about right. Trump very probably doesn't see why him wearing a baseball cap was not the right thing to do.

Yup. It's complicated aint it.

Civilian to military, a nod is enough, but even then, too much. Trump has a problem with the US "hand over the heart" thing. That button mushroom organ is rather transient over his person.

Probably resident on his head just now, hence the massive white cap ?

Reagan was the first to return the salute. Prior to that there was either no acknowledgment or minimal acknowledgment. Now it seems to have become what's expected.

IMHO (and this is just me) if a POTUS is a veteran (Reagan was), returning the salute could be considered proper as an erstwhile 'comrade in arms' in recognition of common service. If not a veteran I'd say acknowledge with a single head nod and a dignified smile in their general direction.

Based on my new 'protocol' the last POTUS 'entitled' to return a salute would have been Dubya who served in the Air Natl Guard.

Um, the 'button mushroom organ' isn't actually his heart.

At least not according to Stormy Daniels.

Bellingcat:

New video footage shows a US Tomahawk missile hitting an IRGC facility in Minab, Iran, on Feb 28, showing for the first time that the US struck the area. The footage also shows smoke already rising from the vicinity of the girls’ school, where 175 people were reportedly killed, including children.
