Trump: "Spain has been terrible. I told Scott to cut off all dealings with Spain. They said we can't use their bases. We could use their bases if we want. We could just fly in and use it. Nobody is gonna tell us not to use it."

Trump: "I'm not happy with the UK ... this is not Winston Churchill that we're dealing with"

I mean, unhinged as standard but there is a worrying undertone to the “we could just fly in”.

Good evening from Cyprus, where I am glad to be eating my earlier words about Kier Starmer. I am delighted at his actions today, and equally delighted by the Mango Mussolini’s reaction.

Thank you for all your support and kind words on here these past few days, it has been lovely knowing the people on this thread have our backs!

How are things feeling over there?

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 03/03/2026 19:41

Life is just going on as usual, @Igotjelly - except anti-British sentiment is increasing because it feels as if the Sovereign Base as Akrotiri has made us a target. I see there was an anti-war demonstration in Limassol today, demanding the removal of British bases from Cyprus. We (the husband and I and our group of local friends) are very happy that Greece, France, and finally the UK, are sending support against possible attacks by Iran, we feel a lot safer than we did yesterday. Thank you for asking!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 03/03/2026 19:45

I don't think the current British government can really be blamed for the existence of anything which has been there for decades, if we're trying to be fair. (Sir Keir Starmer had not even been born when the two bases were set up, nor yet when they were retained in 1960.) What exactly are they to do? Pack up their dollies and go home at this point? It wouldn't make a lot of sense for them to do so, because it's too late: Iran has already made a target of the island.

This ties in with what my Sky news feed says re Trump accusing KS of: 'pandering to Muslim voters ... I never thought I'd see that ... I never thought I'd see that from the UK'

NOBODY benefits from 'Armageddon'.
(nobody but Trump & Netanyahu benefits from trying to create a pre - 'armageddon' state either)

As opposed to all the non Muslims who are just desperate to see British troops die in a pointless war at Americas request (obviously also lots of civilians). Pesky Muslims so out of step with the rest of the UK.

AcrossthePond55 · 03/03/2026 19:55

Already bullshit going on in TX. Mainly it sounds like voters showing up and being told 'this is not your polling place' and being sent elsewhere.

Very early info is stating that the mail in and early voting was heavily Democratic
in TX but actual results will not be announced til polls close.

MS-Now coverage with Rachel & Co starts at 7pm ET. Today's primaries are TX, NC, AR. No result will be reported until all polling places in a state close. My figuring is that would be 10pm for TX, 9pm for AR, and 8pm for NC (all times Eastern).

Under past administrations, there was a benefit to have the president attend the event and give a speech in which he would inevitably pay tribute to the freedom of the press.

Shit fuck damn piss hell, that's why he's showing up. And referring to himself as 'the Honoree'. 🤮

It's going to be a loooonnnnggg night.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 03/03/2026 19:01

I'm glad he has managed to redeem himself. He does seem to have got up Trump's nose really seriously by not rolling over and saying "woof" enough.

I think he is managing the situation as best as anyone in his position could except I don't understand why they didn't send the boat to the med earlier (possibly before Trump even attacked). Maybe they thought staying out of it would mean Iran wouldn't attack UK bases (reasonable)? Someone else I know theorised it might have made it look like the UK was intending to join in and increased the chances of attack.
But apart from that I'm finding it hard to find fault... That may all change of course.

walllaw · 03/03/2026 20:10

It would be nice if this is forcing Starmer to finally find his backbone.

@Jaichangecentfoisdenom

except anti-British sentiment is increasing because it feels as if the Sovereign Base as Akrotiri has made us a target. I see there was an anti-war demonstration in Limassol today, demanding the removal of British bases from Cyprus.

That's exactly the kind of fracturing of alliances that Vance, Miller, Bannon and Musk are hoping for. I'm pleased that he's done the right thing and really hope that sentiment calms down.

I’m sorry, I’m not making myself clear - the anti-British sentiment is long-standing, I believe it goes back to at least 1960 and I think probably decades earlier than that. The resentment against British sovereign bases bubbles under continuously, and of course, events like these recent ones exacerbate it.

He's not bothered how long it lasts or who gets obliterated.

And just look at what he calls Zelenskyy.
Never any hilarious nickname for His Lord and Master Pootin.

He really is scum. How the fuck can someone act as an impartial negotiator when they clearly identify with the aggressor?

Fucking piece of shit arsewipe illegally starting a war, just so he can make more stolen money from his stolen oil from the country whose leader he kidnapped. Creating a less safe world because of his greed.

Crerinous, treacherous fuckhead.

I'm beginning to run out of adjectives and nouns (well, all words) to accurately convey what I think he is. So any new ones are very welcome!

OP posts:

Just when you think we've reached the bottom, he finds a new low.

That he is still in position after the first 3 months astounds me. How many times are we scraping the barrel for new ways of describing the shit he's pulling because American politicians think this is ok?

America is a very poor friend and shit ally right now.

I'm still working my way back catching up with everything (busy couple of days for me, so out of the loop), so am very late to say, Brew for you @Jaichangecentfoisdenom and others with nearest and dearest in Cyprus.

I'm sorry it's been such a scary time. I hope things stay nice and quiet for you.

Yes I noticed that bit.

I know he's just making it up on the spot, like he did the threat to stop trading with Spain completely (erm, it's in the EU; not gonna work like that).

But it's not OK that he so casually threatens any country, let alone allies.

TokyoSushi · 03/03/2026 22:05

My goodness, have been out and have just seen the Winston Churchill comments - he is absolutely mahogany today!!

Starmer has been dire over this.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 03/03/2026 22:14

I see the US Consulate in Dubai has been hit tonight. But Trump and his supporters won’t care because they are safe in the US. It’s disgusting. (I’m talking about Trump’s behaviour, not Iran’s.)

RedTagAlan · 03/03/2026 22:34

From the CNN feed, and just to record it, Spain issued a well worded statement.

"Spain has defended its role in NATO after US President Donald Trump criticized the country’s defense spending and threatened to cut trade with it.

In a statement, Spain said that it “fulfills its commitments and makes a prominent contribution to the defense of European territory.” It described itself as “a reliable partner” for 195 countries, including the United States.

Spain said that if the Trump administration wanted to review the trade relationship, “it must do so with respect for the autonomy of private companies, international law, and the bilateral agreements between the European Union and the US.”

“Our country has the necessary resources to contain possible impacts, help sectors that might be affected, and diversify supply chains,” the Spanish government said.

Spain added that it would work for free trade and economic cooperation between countries, based on mutual respect and compliance with international law, “because what the public asks for and deserves is more prosperity, not more problems.”"

Just for reference, with no comment really, I will post this link about something every Spaniard living in the Bush era will remember. I remember it as I am sure we all do, so to save folk from having to hunt for it.

Macron says no to the war, says it is illegal, but is sending the French carrier and battle group your way.

You soon won't be able see the sea for warships.

Time to get a pair of binoculars and a pack of Trump cards warships ? I think I might have had this set. Showing my age.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland paid off the WW2 debt to the US of A in 2006. Winston Churchill asked for help twice and twice it was refused until the attack on Pearl Harbour.

The CIA is working to arm Kurdish forces with the aim of fomenting a popular uprising in Iran, multiple people familiar with the plan told CNN.

MsJinks · 04/03/2026 06:49

I still don’t know the end game - does Iran have to ‘surrender’ but who would accept that?

Does there have to be a regime change, by the Iranian people apparently, but how stable would that have to be? (Which seems doubtful it could be for a good while, sadly)

How can Israel/US know when all capacity for nuclear progression is finished? Perhaps they would know, and is that sufficient? But we were told it had done this in June 25 in quite short order.

Or do all terrorists/terrorism supplies are taken out? Not sure that is possible but what stage of destruction of Iranian facilities/commanders is enough?

I don’t want to get into the Gaza war but every time I hear of missiles on Gaza they’ve destroyed Hamas operatives or Hamas tunnels - Gaza is incredibly small compared to Iran so how long would a similar mission take?

I realise I sound very naive but surely there is a point to the war and an idea of what Israel/US consider ‘success’ and ‘end of’ - before it reaches ‘the Rapture’! And be good to have an idea of what it is.
ETA - I thought a war would have to have a reason or purpose that can be clearly defined.
