In totally random news, the birds are singing really loudly

I am in England and it is past 2 am 😂

Posters talking about the state of Labour, Robert Jenrick says he is making an announcement about Rachel Reeves tomorrow... goodness knows what that would be. It may turn out to be a damp squib but he's counting it as a big scandal.

Ironically, this does feel like a time where a new party would be a huge risk. I'm not a Reform voter anyway - it's just something that occurred to me. Depends how long this goes on of course.

I cannot wait...hoping it's not an over exaggeration.

I admit I have no idea as not on X, if that’s where’s it’s circulating.

@Julen7’s guess made me laugh

How does Starmer manage to make himself look so weak, and so bad, every single time without fail? It's almost an art form.

As suspected, Jenrick has indeed made a knob of himself with this ‘scoop’.

I think it will be interesting to watch Jenrick. He’ll be a study in being an obscenely ambitious politician who jumped ship for his own benefit and might well now be beginning to regret it. Stunts and press releases a-go-go!

💯

He really does. Every time, without fail. He's embarrassing.

@DameProfessorIDareSay

Thanks for the link. What a knob he is.
I'm glad he's gone to Reform. They are welcome to him.

I don't think this will be popular with the Labour left, after their drubbing in G&D.Shabana Mahmood has ripped up the government’s asylum rules so that from Monday every refugee will be told that their status is temporary and will last just 30 months.In a move that has concerned a refugee charity, the home secretary said that claimants whose countries are deemed to be safe by the UK government will from now on be expected to return.https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026/mar/01/shabana-mahmood-to-limit-refugees-to-30-months-in-uk

I can’t see how anyone could have a problem with that. Oh, hang on, it’s the Labour Party we’re talking about. So there’ll be plenty of Labour MPs muttering about “fascist policies” and Enoch Powell.

I’m gutted that Burnham’s not more in the news. He’s a rich vein of Labour comedy.

Ooh no they won’t like that, how mean. Although I’ll believe it when I see it. They can’t seem to process asylum seekers properly now, let alone every 30 months.

Really hope she manages to push it through. She's said before that she thinks the changes are needed in order to keep the population's acceptance of the asylum system at all - so I think she's serious. It should be noted that the Danish changes which have been so successful - and she's trying to emulate - came from their left wing party. We need to get away from the myth that open borders should be a left wing cause, when in fact excessive low-skill immigration harms working people most of all.

It did jump out at me that children who arrive unaccompanied are exempt from their status being temporary. There's already a huge problem with 30 year olds pretending to be child migrants. If this is to be an exception, it only increases the drive to lie. It can only work if they get rid of the ridiculous constraint that they can't do simple checks - like dental checks - to confirm age. How can it be against human rights to have a minimally-invasive check of age?!?

If any other party said this the backlash would be postal. As it’s Mahmood there will be nada from the same lot.

As for backbenchers there’ll be a bit but probably not enough, I’m surprised no voting on it

It's interesting, isn't it - there are some reforms which only a left wing party can get in. For all our sakes, we need to hope for a bit of insight and willingness to put country ahead of party from them.

Agreed, but given they've driven this country into the ground since being elected I think the odds on that are very long indeed.

Agree!
Any genuine refugee would be only too happy to have any checks etc for age!

EasternStandard · 02/03/2026 10:29

I’m amazed there’s no vote tbh. I can’t take the switch from Starmer’s ‘it’s racist / far right’ rhetoric to anything which was repeated by many to this. I wonder if the backbenchers will accept the shift but we’ll see.

If you wish to have permanent residency in France, you get booked in for a TB screening, and you have to strip completely naked and walk across the room to the machine. A quick dental check seems pretty minor by comparison.

From googling I understand that Shabana Mahmood can implement the 30 month review legislation (and has from today) without needing a vote as it’s deemed as a “change to the rules”. The other part of her reforms is the need for a person to be in the UK for 20 years before they can claim permanent settlement which isn’t coming into effect till April and this part may well be challenged by the left in the coming weeks.

Not very eloquently put but that’s the bones of it, thank goodness I’m posting on this thread and nobody will aggressively demand my sources.

WHERE ARE YOUR SOURCES? LINKS! NOW!

On a serious note, I do think the backbenches will kick off about these immigration changes. I doubt the fuss will be big enough to force yet another Labour crisis but it will further increase the party’s willingness to throw Starmer off the roof when the opportunity comes along.

Yes there’ll be a bit, not sure how much but your summary makes sense. It’s definitely not the change Rayner meant on tweeting after coming third in G&D.

Thanks for the info. Your last paragraph made me laugh. 😁

Parliament should be interesting today. Hannah Spencer's debut too.
