I'm glad the by election is over. It was a horrible campaign. Hopefully it will shine a light on the green party, and what they are now actually about.
Labour MPs must be furious at Starmer for blocking Burnham. He sacrificed the seat to save himself, and for what? He's a laughing stock with no power.

Hannah Spencer ran against Burnham in the Greater Manchester mayoral election. She came fifth (out of 6).

Interesting! Gives us hope that Gorton was just a moment of madness.

Praying that the regime falls quickly.

I hope they fold up their tables and leave

I genuinely think it was a by election protest result, not one which would've happened in an actual GE.

My family in Qatar have been told to shelter in place.
Family in Bulgaria say lots of American aircraft have been arriving in Sofia. It was big news because the airport was closed temporarily.

I hate war, but really hope this is the beginning of the end for those bastards.

We can only pray

Hello! Here you all are.

Have seen the news about Iran. I hope the regime is toppled quickly. And that people there can start living normally.

DancingFerret · 28/02/2026 09:52

EmeraldRoulette · 28/02/2026 00:42

@DancingFerret oh so you're not familiar with the current beliefs of the Green Party... the comments on this thread will be helpful so do have a read if you haven't already

You might also find this piece about their (now) deputy leader will explain a bit about what you're asking

Thank you. It seems I need to expand my horizons beyond the Con/Lab tussle and take more notice of so-called fringe parties. The UK's political continuum has clearly hit the buffers.

I hope so too. Just had a look at the air space over Iran, Iraq Jordan etc. it's empty.

We have an air base near us. They mach loop here. They were flat out all week last week. I suspected the push was imminent

CruCru · 28/02/2026 10:09

A friend is in Bahrain. He says that schools will be doing distance learning all next week.

WellErrr · 28/02/2026 10:15

Can someone give me an idiots guide to what is happening in Iran? There are certain threads of news I don’t follow, as I don’t cope well with too much of the worlds misery on my mind.

Twitter gives you sound bites rather than drawn out journalists opinions. I find that more informative. Less biased.

CruCru · 28/02/2026 10:31

Israel and the US have begun strikes against Iran. They said they would a while back if Iran went ahead with its nuclear and ballistic missile programme. The US has been moving a lot of its ships over to the seas near Iran over the last few weeks.

Iran’s leader has been taken somewhere else (so not Tehran) - according to Iranian officials.

Trump has said that Iran and its proxies keep attacking US service personnel and keep arming terrorists. He has said that this is the Iranian people’s chance to overthrow the government.

Iran has retaliated against Israel by sending missiles. It has also struck a bunch of US bases in the Middle East (my friend sent me a video of the one in Bahrain).

Agree. Stay away from the BBC

There's a sensible and informative thread in CITME. A few of us on there.
Agree with others about being careful what you read/watch. The early reports on msm weren't accurate.

justasking111 · 28/02/2026 10:55

Probably wise to avoid threads on here. A lot of hate for certain religions, ways of thinking. All from the safety of their armchairs. Far away.

EmeraldRoulette · 28/02/2026 11:50

@TheNuthatch I hope your family are okay 💐

I was beginning to think nothing was going to happen in the region. Normally I think about it on a Friday because Trump prefers to act after markets have closed but the last couple of Fridays I didn't think about it at all. I thought perhaps they decided against it.

@WellErrr the brave people of Iran have been protesting against the regime for quite some time and many protestors have been killed by the regime. I hope that freedom is finally in sight.

@DancingFerret That's interesting because many people say that Conservative & Labour are pretty irrelevant now and I know what they mean. Of course we can never know what's really happening until the general election. But the vibe among many is that the "uniparty" is irrelevant. Greens have been surging ahead in the polls since early autumn, I think? It looks possible Keir Starmer will lose his seat to them, again it's based on polling in the area.

Very much way the way the New York mayoral election went.

it really, really really worries me, for many reasons.

The general level of crazy we see on the left in the US is about to get a big boost here. Scary times. But those people are very happy.

Some might say there's going to be more of a battle between the real left and the real right. I dislike the rhetoric that's been directed towards Reform on here and I wouldn't even vote for them.

I pop up on the other threads occasionally trying to establish facts. I think Greens really need to clarify their stance on drugs for example.

I don't think smearing anyone is helpful. But mostly, it's not worth engaging. People don't want to hear facts and that's scary. There was a lot of "Reform will tax women if they don't have children" going on here. I'm a childfree woman and I've seen other parties in Europe suggest that. It gives me the rage. No one in Reform has suggested it, but it's touted as if it was fact on here.

One of the best ways to get information is to follow the party leaders on social media. The headlines are never accurate and then what people talk about is often not from the source. That puzzles me. It's now so easy to get information from the source, but people don't do it.

TheNuthatch · 28/02/2026 15:56

Thank you @EmeraldRoulette. All safe and well.
They've been told to stay in the carpark of their apartment building. Loads of missiles seen overhead, but being dealt with by air defences.

Why have “British planes in the sky” after refusing the use of YS bases on British sovereign soil?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c20l1v0ldqzo

I can’t figure it out.

Emily Thornberry’s only response this morning was it’s unlawful.

Labour are all over the place.

They'll be protecting assets in the ME.

Of course Starmer also needs to sound relevant whilst not upsetting the lefties. 🙄

I’m in the same boat with family living there; they are about 15km away from the Fairmont and are being sensible and staying undercover. Still worrying though.

They agree the danger is from shrapnel when missiles are shot down, but of course one could get through so I’m still fretting.

Its a nervous time isn't it. I've been glued to the news and my WhatsApp all day. Let's hope its over quickly. Flowers

Because they haven't had an U turn in what, a couple of days now?

Also, the by-election is over.
