The thing is that the Greens doing well at the local elections means almost inevitably losing the GE.

I cannot imagine they will do well on local level, and it will also mean the general electorate will have scratched their protest vote itch.

CruCru · 08/03/2026 19:49

The Liberal Democrats are coming round quite often. They usually do well in the local elections when Labour are doing badly.

They’ll all just go green. It will be a mess … everything will be mismanaged in the manner that Labour had mismanaged Hackney!

Is that a thing?

Until a few years ago, I was friends with two people who lived in Hackney. Knew them for about 20 years and they thought it was well run and always voted for the same candidate.

NoWordForFluffy · 08/03/2026 19:59

Our council is a Labour stronghold and they've been utterly awful. It's an 'all out' year, so I'm hoping they lose control this time (though hopefully not to Reform who are mismanaging neighbouring Lancs).

Some of our current councillors are standing in safer seats in other towns this time, which seems rather cynical.

It would be hilarious if Islington South ditches Labour in the GE! 😁

EasternStandard · 08/03/2026 20:05

Labour really take London votes for granted. I’d love to see them drop.

Not looking forward to the share news later. It’s great isn’t it, fast approaching an economic tipping point and we’ve got a terrible team in charge.

They certainly don't inspire confidence.

They are terrible and also hopelessly economically incompetent. This crisis is causing worldwide financial chaos; the difference is other countries have real leaders attempting find solutions, while we have self-aggrandising schoolchildren whose leader's statement on the situation later today is expected to include topics such as freezing gas prices and how children are protected by the imminent lifting of the two child cap.

EasternStandard · 09/03/2026 09:54

I recall the IMF warning Reeves and Starmer that they needed a buffer for an event, eg a war or pandemic. They didn’t listen of course.

TheNuthatch · 09/03/2026 10:42

The Conservatives will table a motion this week to try and force a vote on the upcoming increase in fuel duty.

Steve Reed ruled out any help this morning, also wouldn't commit to Labour's earlier pledge to reduce energy bills by £300.

Whereistheejectbutton · 09/03/2026 10:56

More ‘but what can you do’ hand wringing /
and gaslighting about how we’ve never had it so good…

TheNuthatch · 09/03/2026 11:00

🎶 Everything is fine 🎶

Julen7 · 09/03/2026 11:02

Think the Starmer thread has been infiltrated this morning, a little bit amusing.

Whereistheejectbutton · 09/03/2026 11:04

Ooh off to find it - beats looking at things invested in shares today…

Whereistheejectbutton · 09/03/2026 11:07

It does look like we’re cooked doesn’t it, as Trump has dug in and Iran isn’t folding…we can only hope now that Iran is blustering and they’re closer to collapse than it looks. But their ability to kill 1/5 of oil shipping…

awful footage of the damage by drones, all the innocent people caught up in this conflict…

I know so many innocent people, and also animals (not trying to suggest animals are more important than people but pictures today of dogs and cats left behind by owners fleeing Dubai, broke my heart 😔). I don’t think I could ever leave my animals behind.

Same.
I've read some awful comments on here about the people out in the ME. "Fuck 'em" "tax dodgers" etc. Similar from Ed Davey in the HoC.
I'm avoiding all pro Labour threads atm.

Whereistheejectbutton · 09/03/2026 11:20

No it’s desperate for them isn’t it? The gene pools for so many dog breeds took years to recover from
ww1 and ww2. I’m not sure I could leave my pets either but I am very glad we’ve never faced
these choices, they won’t let cats or dogs into the uk without many tests and paperwork due to disease control.

maybe someone is feeding them.

i watched ‘one life’ about Nicholas Winton this weekend with the kids - great film and so terribly sad.

Whereistheejectbutton · 09/03/2026 11:22

It’s so stupid - we rescue ex pats from many theatres of war, why suddenly do people from Dubai need to pay? It’s a rhetorical race to the bottom and ed davey has gone down in my estimation.

Ed has gone a bit off lately. I liked his Mandelson question to Starmer. But I’ve been turning off his latest stuff.

TheNuthatch · 09/03/2026 11:33

To give Starmer some rare credit, he does seem to give a shit about the evacuation flights for those who want to leave.
His supporters are busy laughing at them though.

redange · 09/03/2026 11:58

Ed Davey, the person who thinks falling of a Surfboard or pretending to be a Horse makes his Knighthood an appropriate recognition for such acts of pure idiocy. Anyone, who is likely to alter a vote because apparently pulling a silly face or attacking a journalist deserves to be struck off the 'Election Register'.

Here, is a man who should have had his Knighthood removed for his appalling non action regarding the Sub- Postmasters criminal convictions. Not just that he should have been removed from the HOC . However, we have the usual bunch of 'Weirdos' Lib- Dems who shout out his praises. In reality he is both a flawed and distinctly untalented individual !

Completely agree @redange

He visited my area to do one of his silly stunts but the weather was so bad it was called off and he went to visit a local farm instead. A group of women went along to ask him very polite questions about women’s rights and he ran into a Portacabin to hide!

Vile little man.

And never forget, Ferring Pharmaceuticals, who produce puberty blockers among other drugs, gave the LIbDems £1.6million...

Pacificsunshine · 09/03/2026 13:01

If we are going to say non-tax payers get no services … thst is the end of the welfare state. At least the folks in Dubai are generally bringing some of their income back into Britain. (Remittances/capital return)

EmeraldRoulette · 09/03/2026 13:08

I had that thing today where I opened the window and got nothing but the smell of weed

I was just thinking, can I be bothered to report this to the management company again?

And then my next thought was, as part of the Left/Right shuffle, Labour will relax laws on this as well. I think Sadiq Khan was already talking about it?
