Tried it once ...... never again!!

Just caught a bit of the Winter Olympics on TV and was reminded of the one and only time I tried skiing. It was one of the worst and most terrifying experiences of my life and I will definitely not, never, ever be doing it again!!

Ditto, my only experience of scuba diving .... still having nightmares years later!!!!!

Both these activities are on my "Tried it once but never again" list. Anyone else got a Never Again experience?

Skiing - how can something be terrifying and boring at the same time? I spent £££ just to roll around in the snow for an entire week.
Horse riding - following behind my DH whose horse just decided to piss and shit all the way round.Next day I could hardly walk.
Coldplay live - I just do not see the appeal. Didnt want to go and proved myself right.

Mud bath. I went to one in Colombia, about an hour from Cartagena. It looked idyllic but turned into one of the most horrific experiences of my life. I went in with a friend who was fine but I basically had a panic attack as soon as I stepped in as thought I was sinking in the mud. I began screaming, arms flailing and tried to flip myself on my back as I reasoned I could ‘float’ on the mud. A group of male guides tried to calm me but I was hysterical and tried to fight them off as they restrained me. My friend was begging me to calm down while the other tourists looked at me like I was insane and I overheard an American couple speculating I was on drugs! Eventually I was lifted out.

Events then took a turn for the worse. In keeping with the Iocal custom I had paid a village boy a small fee to hold my bag containing my clothes for safe keeping while I was in the mud bath. When I emerged, weeping and wailing, he was nowhere to be seen. In fairness he assumed I would be at least 45 minutes so probably went to chill somewhere. Anyway this meant I had to just stand around in my muddy swimming costume for ages until he reappeared while the guides chuckled and shook their heads at my performance😂

Anyone tried kissing the Blarney stone? You lay on your back, shuffle into open space, only supported by a bored student and put your lips on a piece of rock that 67 billionty people have snogged already that day. No fucking chance.

Also magic mushrooms. Did them once and it was hilarious chasing my errant toes around the disco as they tried to escape from my jesus sandals. Until it wasn't...

Yeah, but the Blarney Stone is a way of fleecing eejits. I mean, who in their right mind would climb to the parapet of a castle, lean out backwards over a void with a couple of rusty-looking bars underneath to snog a chunk of rock remarkable only for the fact that everyone else dopy enough to do it has left it smeared with their lipstick and saliva? And pay for the privilege?

I am another one who hid at laser quest. Had hassled my parents to go but had no idea what it was and was shocked when it turned out other people would be trying to shoot at me. Took refuge behind a pillar and waited an eternity til we were let out 😂

Flinging myself out of a plane. I stil feel queasy and it was 23 years ago.

I read that as “fingering myself out of a plane” at first glance.
I’m mucky minded dirty mare. 🤣

I thought it was ‘barn dancing’.

I’ve been misquoting old Tommy for years, in that case!

Ooh interesting. I've never fancied it at all but I only ever hear people saying they are wonderful, you'd love it. What did you not like?

I’ve only ever been on a mini one (3 nights) but never again.
What I disliked most was the people who go on cruises. A lot of them, anyway.

Paintballing

Went for 14 yr old relatives bday. It looked a laugh, a bit of messy fun, nothing too scary.

God, it was awful.

A bunch of middle age blokes who took it way too seriously ruined it for the kids, as they all marched in suited, booted and armed to the gills with all their own professional paintballing guns and balls...which you weren't supposed to have, but for some reason they got away with.

The paint balls actually really fucking hurt. A lot! We came out beaten up and bruised to buggery, with one of our gang ending up with a fractured finger from a paintball shot.

The goggles mist up all the friggin' time so you can't see fuck all.

None of the jumpsuits fit any of us - either riding up arses or tripping us up where they were ludicrously too big.

We were late getting out of a round (because of the blokes taking it too seriously) and our pizzas for lunch were cold when we got to them. We were then shouted at by marshalls to hurry up and eat because the next round was starting in 5 mins. We didnt even get time for a piss!

Literally EVERYTHING is an additional cost - paintballs, goggles, gloves, demisting wipes (that don't work) etc. You book and pay, thinking you're getting all this stuff. But no, you have to pay more. And small batches of paintballs hat don't last 2 minutes cost an absolute fortune.

A very expensive couple of hours to be uncomfortable, blind, in pain, dying for a wee, hungry and tolerating a bunch of grown men acting like they were in Nam.

A laugh, it was not
Fun, it was not
Never again

Tryonemoretime · 09/02/2026 22:35

Cyprus. The Akamas. There's a good way of doing it - driving along a road behind a coach to the car park. Then there's the back way. The way we went. 'There's a sign for it." I told my husband. "Must be a short cut." So we went the way less travelled. Easy at first. Then rocks littered the road and we had to zig zag around them. The track quickly narrowed so we couldn't reverse. Suddenly, we were on a donkey track - a steep drop on to rocks in boiling seas to our left. And a vertical cliff face to our right. I have never, never been so terrified in all my life.

Mauvish1 · 09/02/2026 22:44

I've actually done a lot of the least popular things here and went back for more!

But crib goch aside, there are other things I've never done and will never, under any circumstances, do --
Caving etc. Why? I really can't understand the attraction.
Alton towers. Foul. I didn't even go on any roller coasters because that's something else I dont need to try to know id hate it.
Bungee jumping. I don't want retinal bleeds and I quite prize the intactness of my bodily sphincters, thank you.
Exams. Especially music exams. I'm happy to think that I never need to do another exam in my life.

Sadly I doubt I'll ever ice skate or ski again and horse riding is unlikely because I'm much more aware of my osteoporosis risk these days; but I used to do them all and enjoy them.

You read my mind!!

What a brilliant thread - a good laugh, with none of the usual bitching…I’ve been dipping in and out all day, laughing out loud at some of the descriptions of our bravado and unwise choices😁

Classics thread, for sure, MNHQ 🙏

Durian fruit. The saying goes that it "smells like hell, tastes like heaven".
It tastes exactly as it smells.

Agreed. Durian chocolates make great presents for your enemies.

Ha ha music exams - jeez yeah glad not to repeat. When I get stressed and play the flute my throat squeaks. Traitorous yapping that is out of tune.

I avoid many of these things but have thrice tried to get through the very tame shrinking tunnel that can be found at the Forbidden Corner. A stranger took me down and demonstrated how to get out and he was bigger than me but I had to back up - much easier when it’s not rammed and a cast of many are backing out behind me. Horrific.

I was about to bungee jump but then a man in front seemed to dislocate a hip or similar. I left the queue and insisted on a refund. He was still yelling as I walked off.
