Tried it once ...... never again!!

Just caught a bit of the Winter Olympics on TV and was reminded of the one and only time I tried skiing. It was one of the worst and most terrifying experiences of my life and I will definitely not, never, ever be doing it again!!

Ditto, my only experience of scuba diving .... still having nightmares years later!!!!!

Both these activities are on my "Tried it once but never again" list. Anyone else got a Never Again experience?

Its got to be a butterfly farm for me! Visited one once and it was terrifying. For some reason I did it a second time and was equally horrific. All the kids in there loving it while my husband and I were freaking out. Never again!

God YES - horrible fury flying bastards!

Ecstasy. Everyone said you’ll have the time if your life, so free, so happy.

Absolutely nothing happened until the booming bass from the music started to feel like a hammer being smashed into my chest, it was actually painful. I
made my then boyfriend take me home where I instantly fell asleep while everyone else with us was up all night, gurning. A very strange experience.

Also, contact lenses. All that poking and sweeping, I just couldn’t do it. So much easier to stick a pair of glasses on.

Opera. <shudders>

Bluebootsgreenboots · 09/02/2026 20:06

Bubble tea.
Just yuck.
Have never tried cocaine, couldn’t trust myself with it.
Confined spaces or falling from heights are a no no for me, so that’s that.
SCUBA diving is ok but it’s all a bit heavy and faffy.
And skiing, well, I’ll just have the hot chocolate and vin chaud. The sun terraces are nice though.

Volunteering at an historic garden- the volunteers were sent off to weed a specific area, while the paid gardeners did interesting tasks elsewhere. No guidance, no check-in by the lead gardener. It rained and we were just left to it, when our 5 hours was up, we trudged in to the gardeners' shed and found the paid staff sitting cosy having a cuppa.
They must have been laughing up their sleeves at us mugs.
One of the long term volunteers said they were supposed to get training and experience with the paid staff, but she hadnt had a single session after 18 months.Only weeding, weeding, and more weeding.
One day was quite enough for me.

Is this a thing coz i went for some ( short term )training at a very famous garden and ended up edging a lawn with scissors. And I noticed many of the long term trainees on the course were really backstabbing with each other. Maybe gardens attract nasty people.

The parachute attached to a speed boat thing on holiday. Two creaking carabiners were between me and oblivion on the reef below. And I could see my knickers wafting in the breeze on the balcony of the hotel, fifth floor.

Hesperatum · 09/02/2026 20:11

I’ve found my people. I am a total wuss and not ashamed of it.

Sidebeforeself · 09/02/2026 20:11

Some of these are hilarious. Im sorry for people suffering but @Yodeldodeldo “I wasn’t right for days” had me snorting!

Hlglu56 · 09/02/2026 20:12

Weed brownies. Became really paranoid and started having heart palpitations. I thought I was going to die. Reading through the thread it appears I’m not the only one who’s had a bad experience. At least it’s put me off taking drugs for life.

Coasteering. It’s left me with a fear of the sea. I’m just not a strong enough swimmer and I couldn’t keep up with the rest of the group. Jumping into the cold sea took my breath away, I panicked and couldn’t swim properly. I can totally see how people can go into shock and die from cold water.

I’m trying skiing out this year so it will be interesting to see how I get on. I’m worrying about the chair lifts. I don’t like heights.

Caving. Signed up in the first week of uni in a moment of madness. Terrifying, cold, wet & dark.

@wonderknicks I did EXACTLY the same thing lol lol way back in 1987!

Loathed it

Sitting through Lord of the Rings. Trying to read Lord of the Rings (and The Hobbit).

Trying to read ancient Greeks and Romans etc - The Odyssey and the like. Trying to read almost anything pre-Shakespeare, if we're honest.

Absinthe. Opera. Oysters. Sleeping in dorms. Sleeping in hotel rooms with no window.

Clubbing. Trying to sleep in a car. Walking in that place where I was chased by cows. And that other place where I was chased by cows.

Canal boat holidays. Very claustrophobic, much shoving of locks, waiting for locks to fill, talking about locks, looking at locks.

Wandering up Rosebery Topping in sandals and a dress, reaching summit and having fog sweep in which was damp and freezing and reduced visibility to zero, necessitating sliding all the way down on backside.

Getting trapped on little beach by incoming tide, necessitating scrambling up cliff face while football-sized chunks of rock came loose and plummeted down.

Being a bridesmaid.

Wisdom tooth removal.

On another note, this thread has made me really want to do Go Ape.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 09/02/2026 20:17

I’ve thought of another. Cold water dipping. I got Transient Global Amnesia and ended up in A&E.

Fucking dangerous if you ask me.

SuperSue77 · 09/02/2026 20:27

Don't have time to read them all, but didn't see mine in the first 100 odd that I read, and hope I don't get slammed for animal cruelty - but mine is riding on the back of a camel. Did it as part of an organised trip around Morocco. They took us into the desert on camel back and it was the most uncomfortable and unpleasant hour of my life! Constantly felt I was about to slide off, had to cling on for dear life for 60 minutes, and couldn't see any way out (I was young and by myself, so just had to go with what the others were doing).

I wouldn't do that again if you paid me! I'd go back to Morocco in a heartbet though, loved it.

Puffalicious · 09/02/2026 20:28

Another, like PP, was bungee jumping. On a beach in Greece 1994. I was the one that was all gung-ho. Flirted hard with the very hot Aussies who ran it who persuaded us to do a tandem- tied together- as it's 'Cool doing it with a mate'. What they didn't say was that the double weight makes you spin like a fucking yoyo. As soon as my legs touched the sand I fainted in front of the hot Aussies & had to pay £100 to see a 'medic' (loads when you're 22!) as I had a bright red line through the middle of both of my eyes. It lasted for 2 weeks & I looked like an extra from a sci-fi film.

Never again.

moderndilemma · 09/02/2026 20:29

Oh and waterskiing. I did OK at the start, managed to get up out of the water and on to the skis..

But then being towed by a boat with a guy with a megaphone shouting "keep your legs together" "keep your legs together".

I didn't manage to keep my legs together and crashed bottom first. Sea water enema!

FryingPam · 09/02/2026 20:30

I forgot to mention camping! I was backpacking with my then-boyfriend, we only carried a tiny tent not even big enough to sit inside, it was raining non-stop and I spent a night in the mud, wet and cold, obviously didn’t sleep at all. Then a full day hiking with wet clothes and sleep deprived, followed by another horrible night. Luckily then we were near a town and checked into a hotel.

SpringTimeIsRingTime · 09/02/2026 20:31

Flying in a tiny aircraft over Canada a few years ago.
My DH refused to go with us and we made fun of him.
About a year later the very same aircraft crashed doing the same trip and all 9 people aboard were killed.
Never again.
Small planes are too risky.

Caving, definitely! I was an additional adult taking a school trip of 14 year olds, so I thought it would be an easy little trot through some caves, but we did something horrific they called an 'envelope' which was crawling on your belly through a very long slot of cave, then a 'chimney' with a twist in it which was very very narrow. I had to bring up the rear, make sure they all through okay, and one had a real panic attack about it (can't blame her) and I thought we'd never get out. I felt proud I'd managed it, but never again...

Was this in Wales? Sounds very similar to a college residential trip in 1998 😁

fouroclockrock · 09/02/2026 20:35

Fishing in a very small boat off the cornish coast in slightly choppy waters.

NotDarkGothicMama · 09/02/2026 20:40

Diving in a dry suit. I was looking forward to it being the highlight of my holiday, right up until they put a tight collar around my neck and said it wouldn't work if they loosened it. Never again.

Any holiday accommodation where my bed and bathroom are less comfortable than the ones I have at home. This rules out festivals and shared dorms at youth hostels.

Going to any country in the Middle East or North Africa without my husband. I've never felt so harassed and unsafe in my life.

Edited

I had to read the Hobbit in primary school. I had no clue what it was. It might as well have been Dutch.

Laser Quest.
Had to go with a bunch of macho men as my (male-dominated) work organised a 'Christmas' night out.
Didn't understand the rules or what/who I was supposed to be shooting at.
Hated running around in the noisy darkness so mostly hid behind a pillar for an hour.
At the end of the session the instructor read out the scores and said how rubbish was in front of the whole team.
Not fun. No.

Yep.
I also just hid behind a post and got tagged by 9 year olds. Came last out of 27 , twice.
Only did it because I ended up organising a colleagues 21st birthday event.
