Tried it once ...... never again!!

Just caught a bit of the Winter Olympics on TV and was reminded of the one and only time I tried skiing. It was one of the worst and most terrifying experiences of my life and I will definitely not, never, ever be doing it again!!

Ditto, my only experience of scuba diving .... still having nightmares years later!!!!!

Both these activities are on my "Tried it once but never again" list. Anyone else got a Never Again experience?

Jellyfish salad at a Chinese restaurant in Bloomsbury that I forgot the name of. Managed to be slimy, chewy and crunchy all at the same time 🤢 even my gastronomically worldly Asian friends couldn’t stomach it!

That sounds utterly revolting. I once ate tripe unknowingly and unwillingly when the waitress in a Chinese restaurant gave us someone else's order - despite my questioning she insisted it was our order. As soon as I experienced the texture I knew it was wrong. And I never wanted to eat it again.

The man who invented the Segway died by the Segway. He accidently went over a cliff edge on one 😧

The Segway was invented by Dean Kamen, who is still alive. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dean_Kamen

Cannabis. Gave me horrendous stomach cramps and diarrhoea and the smell
was nauseating.

I didn’t want to go on the back of a motorbike ever again after the first time either.

A large ferris wheel at Disney california. It had cages , some swayed and some were static. It looked so innocuous as it swept slowly and majestically round. My son and I made the mistake of sitting in one of the swaying cages. Within a couple of minutes we both felt so nauseous and desperate to get off. It went round so slowly it was absolute torture!!

Oh my goodness. I was on this over 20 years ago and still have nightmares about it.

The mere thought of caving scares me to absolute death. I saw something about Nutty Putty Cave in Utah on the TV a few years ago and found it very traumatic.

I remember in the mid 90s we went on a school trip to the Black Country Museum and we had a boat trip down a very narrow tunnel which was very low above our heads and full of cold dripping water. When one of the teachers shone her torch the bricks right over us were covered in cobwebs. I thought I was going to pass out either from claustrophobia or the fear of a spider dropping onto me.

Ugali

Whelks

Driving a pony & trap through country lanes. We went over a clattering drain cover which made the pony freak out and pull the cart into the path of an oncoming car. I learned instantly that you cannot steer a cart being pulled sideways by a panicking animal. Pony ok, side of cart hit their wing mirror. It could have been so much worse. Thank God the driver had slowed right down.

Hot air balloon ride. Terrifying from start to finish!

Andouillette. 🤮

thisoldcity · 09/02/2026 16:42

@rubymentorit was on the Welsh border somewhere near the Wye valley, but I couldn't say where exactly. Sounds similar and actually I might have my envelopes and letterboxes mixed up now you've said that!

HowardTJMoon · 09/02/2026 16:43

@Mauvish1 I've just looked up Crib Goch. Sweet baby Jesus that looks nightmarish. And the thought of being there when it's misty... Ugh.

Purplecatshopaholic · 09/02/2026 16:44

Abseiling. Awful, awful, awful.

Revavalley · 09/02/2026 16:45

Fentanyl. I got that before my hysterectomy. It was instant and horrible. I felt like the bed was a big marshmallow swallowing me up. I was floaty and felt really out of it. Why anyone takes that for fun is beyond me.

Yes skiing. I just couuldnt take to it. The one time I managed to get a bit of speed up , I suddenly had an insane fit of laughter. I seemed to be quite close to the edge of something as I moved along but seemed to find ot funny. I was gliding along laughing to myself like a hyena. Very weird. The second week I just hung around in cafes eating chocolate cake. It was also horribly cold. Never again.

Go Ape, I was stuck for one hour at great height terrified with no way down, stuck in a queue with other terrified people not moving due to overcrowding.

Oh no, your post has given me goosebumps !!.
This a recurring dream I get occasionally. It terrifies me.
Felt panicky reading your post.
It must have been such a relief yo get down safely

Andouillette. 🤮

From the Wiki page:

"Andouillettes are generally made from the large intestine and are 7–10 cm (2+3⁄4–4 in) in diameter. True andouillettes are rarely seen outside France and have a strong, distinctive odour coming from the colon. Although sometimes repellent to the uninitiated, the scent is prized by its devotees."

That sounds absolutely revolting.

CharlotteCChapel · 09/02/2026 16:48

Wind surfing. I was with my boyfriend on holiday abandoned he wanted to try it. I spent the entire time trying to get on the board and when I finally managed i fell off the other side. My poor shins were scraped to hell. Also on that holiday I stepped on a pea crab which despite its tiny size was so painful.

We split up not long after.

This was another “one time only” thing for me. I was fine leaping out of the plane with the tandem guy, but I immediately got such intense pain in my head and sinuses that I screamed like a banshee all the way down, thinking my skull was going to pop like a pimple. (In the “action shot” taken by the photographer, I am wailing so hard you can clearly see my tonsils).

I was heavily insured, and living in a country with private healthcare at the time, so I had every test known to medical science to try to identify the cause, including a nasal endoscopy and a brain scan, which found nothing wrong. Eventually the doctor shrugged and suggested I just didn’t sky dive again (like I needed telling!)

Marrying. Terrifying, claustrophobic and panic attack inducing. Never again.

Same. If I'm ever a widow, I'm staying a bloody widow.

I said I wasn't wife material. He should have listened to me.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 09/02/2026 16:53

Love skiing. I’ve skied several Olympic black runs but the height the skiers get when they’re actually racing terrifies me. I ski them at a much more sedate pace.

Gliding.

IT WAS HELL IN THE SKY. I have never ever felt so nauseous in my life. I thought my brain would fall out of my ears and i would vomit myself inside out.

I wouldn’t do it again if you paid me a million pounds!!!

Ha! I've always really fancied it too. This will make me stop wishing!

Love scuba (I'm an advanced diver from back in the day) & ski-ing, but snowboarding was my nemesis. Did board school for a week with an instructor who looked about 12 who rolled his eyes to the back of his head if you couldn't do the half-pipe by noon! DH was 'promoted' 2 groups by lunchtime on the 1st day, & was intermediate level by day 2 (ex skateboarder). I ripped my achilles on day 3, had to be rescued down the mountain & spent the rest of the holiday in the fecking hotel room with French TV. Hell. I leave the boarding to DS1 these days.

Oh, & ketamine. Were given it in error (instead of good ol E). I can say that the effects of horse tranquiliser on the body are fecking wild. I was off work for 3 days...Ah the 90s...🤣🤣🤣

It smelled and tasted like shit. I didn’t believe my friend and thought it couldn’t be that bad, but no he was right. Utterly vile. I had to spit it out.
